Hey there and a happy Friday to you! I’m going to try and start posting more non-nail polish/makeup things on here and since many of you like to know what I’m watching/reading/listening to, etc., I thought I would share from time to time.
I recently discovered Shetland on Netflix which is a BBC production. It’s got the gloomy weather, dead bodies and all-around moody vibe of a good murder drama, plus Scottish accents which are hard to understand (lol)! I am on season 3 (the seasons are very short) and I believe there are 4 of them so far.
Killing Eve, which is a BBC America show, is another one I am just now catching up on Xfinity OnDemand. I am a little more than halfway through. I absolutely LOVE Villanelle, who is played by Jodie Comer, who is soooo good. I also loved her in Thirteen and Doctor Foster (also excellent shows).
And of course I am beyond excited about the Sharp Objects mini-series coming to HBO this Sunday. I read this book about a decade ago when it came out and immediately fell in love with Gillian Flynn’s writing. I think this is going to be really good – I have high hopes. And she said she is ready to get back into writing books for a couple years (after being a show-runner and writer for TV shows) which I am really glad about because I will read anything she writes.
And now onto books! I am not sure how I discovered this writer, but I know I saw an image in Instagram and was immediately intrigued. Grimly Jane is the first in a children’s book series by Elle Alexander. I am halfway through the first one and really like it! The illustrations are great and the story is really good. I believe this will be a three-part series when it’s finished.
Above is a snapshot of my iBooks page. There are SO many books on my list, this is only about 30% of them I have downloaded samples of. Most of these are about-to-be-released books or just released. I did just finish The High Season by Judy Blundell, which has been talked about a ton as THE summer read. I thought it was just ok, nothing all that exciting really. I am also part-way done with The Trauma Cleaner by Sarah Krasnostein, which is about a crime scene clean-up company. I think of the ones above, the one I am most excited to read is My Years of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh because her book Eileen was SO GOOD. I highly recommend that one if you are into dark stories.
As far as podcasts, I am still stuck on Sword & Scale. I finished almost all of the 116 regular episodes, but became a Patreon member at the $5.00 a month level, so I have been listening to the bonus ones now. I feel like I started off with the best podcast murder series ever so all the rest are going to be a let-down by comparison! I did really like Someone Knows Something and In The Dark also.
Other ones I want to try out recommended by friends and followers are True Crime Garage, Already Gone, Up and Vanished, Real Crime Profile, The Generation Why, Casefile True Crime, Criminal and My Favorite Murder.
I am fairly picky when it comes to crime podcasts. I don’t like “light-hearted” or “funny” crime stuff. I want my murder to be dark, depressing and bleak, and it also annoys me when the host(s) are super chatty. So I know for ones like My Favorite Murder, I need to be in a very specific mood to listen to it.
That’s all for now! Have you read/watched/listened to any of these also? Any recs for anything else I might not know about?
