Hello and happy-almost-Friday!
If you have been following me on Instagram/SnapChat these past couple months you know I have been updating my nail polish storage situation. I did a post long ago showing what it looked like before. I used mostly the Sterilite plastic bins of various sizes to store my collection. They worked fine for awhile but they started sagging because of the weight inside, and a few drawers on the bottom of each stack cracked and didn’t want to open easily. I don’t think they are meant to have that much weight in them!
I decided on getting IKEA Helmers because they are neat and orderly looking, are metal, and can handle the weight. Living in earthquake country meant in order to stack them I needed to A. not have the wheels on them (obvi) B. put some drawer liners between the levels to help them stay “non-slippery” and C. bolt the upper layers to the wall (which I still have to do).
I honestly thought I would easily be able to fit my whole collection inside 8-10 Helmers, but it wound up being 14! I went back to KIEA 3 times. Oops. The drawers for Helmer hold a lot less than some of the Sterilite drawers did, so that’s why I needed so many. I did also leave some extra room to grow in most of the drawers since I sorted them by brand.
The idea of the color coding was only partially my idea. I knew I wanted something other than just a white card saying which color was inside each one printed out – I wanted some kind of cool color-coded thing on each drawer. My stepdaughter came up with the idea to get paint swatches from Home Depot store and do a gradient. Brilliant! I love how it came out! They look like a color-coded library, which makes me happy. 🙂
In these drawers above I have all my top coats/base coats, misc. glittery colors and special effects top coats, white, “nude”, yellow, mixed metals, silver, black, red, orange and pink. LOTS of pink!
And on this side I have grey, green, blue and purple. All my favorites!
This is what 80 Zoya purple nail polishes looks like. Whoa.
And here we have a drawer filled with purple OPI colors. And this isn’t all of them!
A whole ‘lotta pink Zoya shades here.
Here is my expensive drawer of blue, and one of my favorite drawers.
And whoa, 47 green BB Coutures! I never would have thought I had that many.
So then of course I wanted to tally everything up and here is the break-down of these 5,285 bottles by color.
- Random glitters/special effects top coats – 90
- White – 94
- Nudes – 134
- Yellow – 119
- Mixed metals – 282
- Silver – 113
- Black – 138
- Brown – 265
- Red – 436
- Orange – 268
- Pink – 693
- Grey – 220
- Green – 727
- Blue – 781
- Purple – 925
Not surprisingly most of the colors I have are greens, blue and purples. I do go through periods where I de-stash colors and give them to friends/family, but rarely do I de-stash any of the colors I like the most.
How do you store your polish stash? Which colors do you have the most of?
