Happy Monday, hope you had a great weekend!
Today I’ve got my thoughts about some of the Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon shades, which I recently bought at Sephora. Now normally I am not one to drop $25.00 on an eyeliner, but when I posted this Instagram question asking people what their favorite black liner was for the waterline, many people suggested these. I had already seen them in the store and they seemed so pretty but again, $25.00 for ONE kinda small looking liner? But the last time I was at Sephora I was in the mood to drop some cashola, so I played around with most of them and decided on the three I liked the best: Blacquer, O(vert) and Midnight In Paris.
Before we go any further I want to tell you more about the formula, because as the name implies, these aren’t your normal eyeliners. These are actually gel eyeliners in a pencil form rather than the typical jar. They have a built-in sharpener hidden away in the bottom of the crayon. They are very soft and meant to last for a long time, even on the waterline. They are waterproof and smudge-proof and come in around 25 shades, according to the Marc Jacobs site, where they are all out of stock. In fact, while I was searching for more info about these on the Sephora site I noticed they were gone there too. I tweeted Sephora and asked about this and they said to stay tuned for restocking information, so I assume they are coming back soon.
I did have some issues right off the bat with these, which really annoyed me. The tip of Blacquer broke right off, which has happened to me plenty of times with other brands, but it’s especially annoying when it’s a very expensive product! Then I went to swatch Midnight In Paris and it was very hard and wouldn’t come off onto my hand. Finally I realized it had slightly dried out and if I worked with it a little bit, it got creamier and then it swatched ok. After looking around online at some other people’s experiences I saw that this isn’t unusual for these. I was going to return them but decided to keep them since I do really like how they look and last.
Midnight In Paris is a deep indigo blue with sparkles.
O(vert) is a dark olive green with a slight metallic sheen.
Blacquer is a jet black.
After my initial “issues” with these, it turns out I actually really like them. They are extremely creamy and pigmented and Blacquer and O(vert), both of which I have worn on my upper/lower waterlines, really do last on me much longer than any other liner I have. I’m talking pretty much all day (8-10 hours)! And another thing I really like is if you just want to line the upper waterline and NOT your lower one, they don’t transfer like most liners I’ve experienced do. They basically “set” then don’t budge. YAY!
There are definitely some negatives though. Aside from the breakage/drying out issue that can happen, I don’t love the sharpener. These are so creamy it’s a little nerve-wracking sharpening them because I’m afraid more will break off. And then there is that hefty price. I wish they were $10.00 cheaper. Well actually I wish they were .99, but we all know that would never happen with Marc Jacobs! 😉
You should be able to find these at Sephora soon, once they restock, and they are $25.00 each for 0.01zz.
Thoughts? What’s your favorite waterline pencil form eyeliner?
