If you haven’t heard of Paula’s Choice Skincare yet, listen up people, this stuff is good and affordable!
As I rapidly approach my 43rd birthday (which I cannot even believe since I still feel like I’m 23) skincare is definitely the most important thing to me in my beauty regimen. I’ve been super cautious about wearing sunscreen on my face for a good 20 years now, but in terms of a daily/nightly skincare program beyond that? I’ve never really had one. Basically all I was doing was using a combination sunscreen/moisturizer for the day and then at night I would slap on some over the counter retinol stuff and occasionally a moisturizer over that. It was all kind of ad hoc because I didn’t really know what I should be using and how to put it all together. Plus I am so lazy when it comes to beauty routines, I need someone to slap me and tell me what to do!
Enter Paula’s Choice. This is a company I have heard about for years and years now but never tried until 2 weeks ago. In fact the founder wrote a pretty popular book called Don’t Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me which is a very in-depth book about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to makeup/skincare, etc. They are cruelty-free, 100% fragrance free and have no added dyes in their products.
The first step in my venture was to have a a skin consultation with a Paula’s Choice expert via telephone. This is a great way to let them know all the issues you may be having with your skin and they can tell you exactly which products you need. It’s free and very helpful. Since fine lines/aging is my #1 concern, they recommended the Resist Advanced Kit for normal to dry skin, which helps with all issues related to aging skin.
Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser – This is a gentle cleanser which removes makeup and makes skin feel great. It’s super smooth and creamy and never stings my eyes. I’ve been using this in the AM and PM and love it.
Advanced Replenishing Toner – The toner helps repair damage and calm down any redness in the skin. This is the second step in the program and I’ve been doing it in the AM and PM.
Daily Smoothing Treatment – This stimulates collagen, evens skin tone and helps smooth wrinkles with 5% AHA. This exfoliant is for use in AM and PM and you only need a small amount.
Weekly Resurfacing Treatment – This is used at night and helps reveal smoother skin using 10% AHA. This is a weekly treatment which you can use at night after cleansing and toning. You can leave it on all night or rinse it off after 10 minutes.
Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum – This helps fade brown spots and fights wrinkles using vitamin C. This serum for the AM and PM is safe for use around the eyes and just a couple of drops is all you need.
Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer with SPF 25 – This protects against sun damage with a broad-spectrum SPF of 25 and also hydrates and smooths skin. Titanium Dioxide (8%) is the active ingredient in this sunscreen. It actually does seem to make my skin have that white cast for just a second when I apply it, but then it goes away after 30-60 seconds and blends into skin invisibly. It doesn’t feel greasy or heavy at all.
Barrier Repair Moisturizer with Retinol – This night moisturizer helps reduce fine lines, firms skin and is safe for face and eye area. This is a nightly moisturizer which can be used on the face and neck area.
They also recommended a couple other wrinkle-fighting products for me to add into my mix which are:
C15 Super Booster – This targets uneven skin tones and helps firm, brighten and smooth the skin. This can be mixed and matched with the above-mentioned products. You can use 2-3 drops with your serum or use it alone. It can also be used on the under eye area.
Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum – Helps stimulate collagen, repair wrinkles and sun damage and reduces dark spots. This is made to be used after you cleanse, tone and exfoliate. You just smooth a few drops onto your face and neck before adding your SPF. It can also be alternated with the Antioxidant Serum.
Can I just say the cleanser is AMAZING? I am a bit picky about my cleansers. They can’t be too foamy or too drying or too heavy or sting my eyes or not remove all my makeup. This one is absolute perfection. It feels so good on my skin I can’t even tell you. I wasn’t expecting at all to fall in love with the cleanser of all things in this kit, but I have!
As mentioned, I have been using this whole system for about 2 weeks now and have nothing but good things to say. However, in the spirit of me keeping it completely honest, which I always do on my blog, I cannot say I have noticed any changes in my skin yet. This might be because it usually takes a good 6-8 weeks of using a system to notice changes, and I simply haven’t put in “the time” yet. Having said that though, I expect to see nothing but good things happening with my skin in future weeks/months.
In the two weeks thus far, I haven’t had any break-outs (which I sometimes do), my skin has never felt dry or tight and my face does feel very smooth when I touch it. I’ve also noticed that the small dry patches that I sometimes get on my face haven’t appeared since I started this program. These are small things but again, it can take some time to see bigger results. I definitely plan on sticking to this regimen because I like having a real skincare system, and I feel good about the brand and how my skin looks so far.
Another huge reason to stick with them for me is the price. Part of the reason I haven’t ever gone whole hog, as they say, is because I just loathe forking over $75.00-$125.00 or whatever for some high-end brand for just ONE item. And then of course you need another item or two, and next thing you know, you’ve spent $350.00 and you feel dirty and guilty. Or at least I do. These products on the other hand are actually very affordable. For instance the 6.4 oz Cleanser is $18.00. The 4 oz Toner is $23.00. Oh and you can also buy sample sizes of everything for $0.80-$1.50 which is very cool!
