Today’s post was requested by a reader via email. She wanted to know if there was really any difference between Illamasqua Scorn and Cult Nails Fetish. They are both black shades and classified as mattes, so let’s check it out.
Judging from the bottles alone you can’t see any difference. Both are super black cremes with a matte finish. You don’t use a base coat or top coat with either, if you want the full texture effect they are meant to have. Both are two coats for complete coverage.
Scorn is a deep black with what they describe as a matte finish. While it is matte, it’s not flat and doesn’t have that “dry” look some mattes have. Does that make sense? It has a slight satin-like finish. A little bit of a sheen. It only takes two coats to cover completely.
Cult Nails Fetish
Fetish is a black with what they call a wax finish. I think that is a spot on term because while it is matte, it definitely looks waxy. Like Scorn, this isn’t totally flat or dull looking. This is also two coats for complete coverage.

So here are the slight differences I see.
One is that Scorn is slightly shinier and just looks a tiny bit different in terms of finish. The shine is brighter somehow.
Another one is that for me, Scorn is a little bit brush-stroke-y, whereas Fetish has no brush strokes whatsoever.

Verdict: Well it takes a discerning eye, but they aren’t quite dupes. They do have a different finish, subtle but there. Things they have in common are that they both are matte-like and both cover nicely in two coats. Also for me, they both tend to highlight my nail ridges a bit, boo! Illamasqua Scorn is $14.00 and Cult Nails Fetish is $12.00, so there is a minor price difference as well.
Winner: I prefer Fetish a bit because I just love the wax finish and it has no brush strokes at all.
What do you think? Which do you prefer?
