In just three days the brand spankin’ new Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette launches!
This stripped down, simplified palette features five matte shades and one demi-matte shade. These are all shades that are really easy for pretty much everyone to wear. Four of the shades are new and exclusive to this palette.
The palette itself is small and feels smooth and silky. It opens up to a good sized mirror and the six eyeshadows. No pesky (aka useless) applicator here!
Venus, Foxy, W.O.S. (Walk Of Shame) (over primer)
Venus is the one shade here that isn’t matte, but rather a demi-matte. It’s a nice white/vanilla shade with very slight sheen. Super soft, great pigmentation.
Foxy is a pale vanilla/beige matte. Soft with just ok payoff.
Walk Of Shame is a pale pink/beige matte. Soft with just ok payoff.
Naked2, Faint, Crave (over primer)
Naked2 is a medium taupe matte. Really pretty shade, would work well for eyebrows also!
Faint is a deep warm brown matte. Gorgeous, pigmented and super soft.
Crave is a dark brown almost black matte. Nice pigmentation, very dark!
Overall: Two of the shades (Foxy and W.O.S.) were a wee bit less pigmented than I would prefer and seemed a little bit chalky at first. I had to work a bit to get more color from them. The other four though were really quite nice. I like the size of the palette because it’s very travel friendly. I like that these shades are all very easy to wear for a huge variety of people. Like they said, these really are the basics!
Availability: Starting on November 29th at Urban Decay, Sephora, Ulta and select Macy’s.
Pricing: $27.00 for 0.05 oz each.
Now I want to hear from YOU! What do you think about Naked Basics? Do you love the matte shades?

Note: Urban Decay is cruelty free.

How does this palette compare to the Too Faced Naked Eye Shadow palette? I know the Too Faced palette doesn’t contain a black. While the Too Faced palette is more expensive, do you think it’s a better deal given shade availability and payoff?
Kelly, Urban Decay have now been purchased by L’Oreal, will this affect their cruelty-free status, do you think?
Great question I really don’t know. A lot of CF companies that have been bought by non-CF companies haven’t changed their ways, so we shall see…
UD formally announced that they wouldn’t change their animal testing policy even after the purchase 🙂 that’s good haha
This is the kind of palette I definitely don’t need but want and probably will get at some point anyway haha
I do like mattes a lot and it seems the perfect size to carry on your make up bag at all times.
I love the idea of a six-piece matte basics neutral palette, but I don’t like the composition of this one; it leans too heavily to the light side rather than a mix of dark to light – they probably should have skipped either Foxy or Walk of Shame and added another medium-depth shade, maybe something darker than Naked 2 and lighter than Faint.

Agreed–that would balance things out. I would actually be willing to pay more for this had they done what you suggested.
Yes!!!!!!!!!! This is exactly what I’ve been wanting! A good solid basic palette with mostly mattes (they always seem to have so much shimmer!) that has all I need for everyday. I think this palette needs to find its way ino my stocking this year haha

This is really UNinteresting to me. Too many light shades, not enough “in between” colors. Meh.
I love all matte shades, but not this. Three of the shades are too light & NAKED 2 seems “meh.” If it was six bright mattes shades, I think I would like it better since I loved their old mattes (Chronic, Heist, Shakedown, Electric). I’m also not for it considering they are planning to let L’Oreal buy their company 🙁
Finally, a matte palette! Thank you, UD!

I think UD’s heart was in the right place, but they should have included another brown or taupe color…just more varieties rather than a lot of light colors. And I see that chalkiness that you are talking about….I don’t know, I’m thinking they could’ve done better …..
Thanks for sharing!
JCrave really looks like black. I keep trying to see it as brown, but man it looks black!
They have Foxy in the Naked 2, I like to use it as a highlight. I just wish they didn’t repeat shades in these. Thankfully, it’s not Half Baked again. I think I have that shade in 3 different palettes of theirs that I own. I’m pretty sure I’ll never run out. Hahaha!
Finally!!! Just what I’ve been waiting for! A matte palette. But I’m a bit dissatisfied. I basically only use the matte colors in my naked palette. I need more range but I’ll probably end up getting this. It will get used.
AAWWw it’s like a baby palette. Cute but I think I’ll pass on it… the lighter shades dont look like they would be flattering on me and the darker ones are too similar to those I already have.
Faint is the only eyeshadow that attracts my attention. Not enough to get the whole palette, huh?

I have been a huge fan of UD mattes and was so upset when they pulled so many (most) of their mattes out of the line – there are only a few now when there used to be 10 or 12. For me, they work better than any other brand of powder eyeshadows. I would never wear Crave but I would wear all the others..it would be a good little one for me to have for travel too – I am curious if Naked2 is too pinky for me to really like on – I am a huge fan of Naked already as it is – I might look at putting this in my cart over at UD where i am going next to see about their Cyber Monday deal…I had an email ad for it but forgetting now what the deal was…thinking it was free ship and a discount as well.
This pallet is gorgeous ! Great for everyday looks 🙂 Thanks for the review and swatches!
This looks very interesting, but I don’t need it right now. There are 4 out of 6 shades I actually wear everyday and I already have a quad with those shades.
Ahh I need this- looks fab!

Thanks for swatching these shades. I was really curious to see this palette. Looks like a lot of staple colours – ones that most people who are crazy about makeup (hehe) won’t really feel a pressing need to buy.
But for those who are starting out, this looks like a wonderful little set to have. And if your’e travelling and want just the basics, this is a good idea!

It’s so funny to me that everyone’s complaining that there are too many light shades because I actually always want palettes to have more light bright shades to suit my fair skin! If Urban Decay came out with an entirely highlight palette with different finishes and undertones I would be first in line to buy it!
Definitely getting this to have some basic matte shades that I can actually use all of :))
Can someone wake me up when Urban Decay is once again an edgy, exciting brand? The Naked palettes are SO boring and I’m just so over it. I love matte shadows, but these put me to sleep.
Great swatches, thanks for doing them. That’s really too bad about Foxy, it’s one of the shades I’ve really wanted from UD. When I first saw this palette, I was so excited. I still am but, it doesn’t look quite as good as I thought. The pink shade I really don’t like much but all the rest are pretty. Naked2 looks lovely. I wish they’d included Naked as well, instead of the pink.

Just discovered your blog and Ihave never tried any UD products before but I would consider buying this pallet as good introduction to their eyeshadows as I like neutrals and mattes. Any suggestions about what UD eye shadow pallet that would be good for someone who never tried this brand before? I want a mix of neutral and more glimmering colours. I tend towards more cool tones as medium complexion, tan easily and Chinese.
Definitely try their Naked palettes! They have a great mix of what you mentioned and are excellent.
