Nail art is pretty huge right now and I have the inside scoop on the biggest trends for this fall.
I can pretty much guarantee that you won’t see these nails anywhere else yet…
Salt & Pepper Nails
First up is what I call Salt & Pepper Nails.
You can find the ingredients for this look pretty much anywhere. All you need is a clear base coat, table salt and pepper.
Salt and pepper in bowl
Salt & Pepper Nails
Salt & Pepper Nails
This is a very simple black and white look. It’s for the person who doesn’t want a lot of color in their wardrobe. You can make it edgier by using sea salt or even peppercorns if you have them! This was two sprinkles of salt and one of pepper.
Potting Soil Nails
Next up is a more daring look called Potting Soil Nails.
This is done with two coats of a dark chocolate brown polish like Color Club Rebel Spirit and plain potting soil straight from the bag.

Potting Soil Nails are more of a daring look than Salt & Pepper Nails. It’s more of a monotone look, but has a lot of nice texture to it. You can see little flecks of lighter brown soil within, which gives it a nice contrast. It almost has a velvety appearance. This was two coats of Rebel Spirit and two sprinkles of potting soil.
Jack’s Bar-B-Que Spice Rub Nails
For those looking for more of a pop of color I give you Jack’s Bar-B-Que Spice Rub Nails.
You will need to use this excellent rub from Jack’s in Tennessee, but luckily they have online ordering. You will also need a burnt orange creme polish like Duri Cognac.

Jack’s Bar-B-Que Spice Rub Nails
Jack’s Bar-B-Que Spice Rub Nails is perfect for fall because it looks like the colors of the turning leaves. The spice rub is infused with many ingredients which are various colors, which gives it really nice dimension. You get flecks of black, orange and yellow mostly. This was two coats of Duri Cognac and two shakes of Jack’s Bar-B-Que Spice Rub.
Sesame Seed Nails
Finally we have Sesame Seed Nails, for the super fashion forward woman.
For this look you will need a jar of regular sesame seeds and China Glaze Kalahari Kiss. You could also use black sesame seeds for a different look.

Sesame Seed Nails
Sesame Seed Nails is more of a fashion forward look because of the edgy base coat color. It’s the color of old computer CPU’s and only the truly brave can pull this off. The similar colored sesame seeds makes it look almost like a tone on tone look, but with a lot of texture.
This was two coats of China Glaze Kalahari Kiss and one layer of sesame seeds.
Wrap-up: So as you can see, there are some pretty cool trends happening this fall. Not only are these nails cool looking, but fairly easy to do at home for the person who isn’t too artistically inclined.
Which of these are trends do you think you would try out?
-Kelly
Note: This is ridiculous, obviously. 😉

Haha, so chic! 😛 The potting soil nails actually don’t look too far off from the velvety trend, hehe.
You are crazy hilarious! Those bbq spice rub nails look mighty tasty!
haha I was thinking you could do that with chilli powder and it would look so cool.. but hurt like hell when you touched your eyes.. I was actually thinking the whole way through reading “is she serious…? euw soil.. ” But great post really made me sit up and take notice! <3
Hahaha! Love it, and really, not much more ridiculous than the velvet or fish-egg mani trends. Some of these actually look pretty great, too. I love the BBQ spice rub mani!
The whole time when I was reading this I was like ‘Is she for real?!’ hahaha
LOL, now, seriously – it’s not looking too bad, so maybe I’ll see someone wearing it? I might skip the earth-toned one, but apart from them, I’m totally a fan of these 😛

Hahahah! Love this!
The best part of all this is the spot-on tone! A little gentle self-mockery is so much fun from time to time. Thanks for the Thursday afternoon giggle.
Holy crap, that was hilarious! Now I’m hungry…

Haha! Hilarious! And I bet cooking goes so much faster, since you have all the seasonings right at your fingertips! (groan)
While reading this post, all I could think of was “Can’t tell if serious or just joking” and then I remembered Scrangie’s April Fools’ joke. Great job! 😀
I actually really like the sesame seed and BBQ nails though!

I actually think the spicy rub ones are really wearable lol!
THANK YOU I swear if I see another tutorial for textured and edgy nail art my head is going to explode. I do like the sesame seeds though 🙂
I really dig the Jack’s Bar-B-Que Spice Rub Nails. =D
I’d do the Bar-b-que Spice nails for real! Mmmm good! Ha:)
Hahahahahahaha!
Is it weird that I’m now hungry after reading this post? Lol
Just waiting for this to hit the shelves!!
These trends will be AWESOME. Can’t wait to say I saw ’em here first!!! 😉 lol

You forgot poppy seed nails. They have the added bonus of deterring nail biters since they could get some positive drug tests if they bite the nails.
Hilarious Kelly. Love seeing things like this on blogs! Keep having fun lady 🙂
LOL It’s all about the texture!
How about coffee grounds nails? When you need a pick me up in the afternoon, just chew on your nails!

LOL!!! Innovation, without a doubt!! Lunch and nail art at the same time!! 😉
Haha, I don’t know which one I’ll try first! Your nail art is way too intense for me.

Hah! This was so funny and adorable. Though I have to agree with some of the people above, the spice rub nails were actually kind of pretty!
I read this whole thing like, “wait is she serious?” then I got to the end and lol’d! This is a really clever post! I would give up nail art forever if this actually catches on! lmao!
haha! awesome!
I guess I would go with the sesame seed 😀 And when I get a little bit hungry I have always something to eat with me! 😀

Don’t rub you eyes with the spicy nails!
You really like to dip your fingertips in spices lately, don’t you?
But look out Kelly, this can be interpreted as a pro-nail-biting campaign!LOLOLOL
You just made my whole day! Bwahahahahaaaa! ♥
Don’t rub you eyes with the spicy nails! I just don’t think these are practical in the real world. Can you even wash your hands?

This post made my day!
This is hilarious!!! Thats it. I’m doing a robins egg nail. HAHA. I may or may not have a tube of crushed up robins egg. Do not ask why.
😀 are you going to patent them??
BTW Thanks for cheering me up!
Aly MaiSenzaSmalto´s last post…Swatch: Orly Flirty [Pink Wednesday]
LMAO!! I needed that right now. =)
Now that this is up on your site I guarantee that Ciate will STEAL the idea and give it some fancy name and sell it in Sephora for 20 times it’s actual value. They are now marketing a “velvet” manicure which is essentially flocking powder on your nails something nail art bloggers have been doing for a while now 🙁

I kept thinking… Is it April 1??? Love it!
Dude. I laughed so hard my eyes teared up! I’m so happy I don’t have a venti of coffee in my bladder right now! OMG the potting soil! *dies laughing*
No joke, I thought you were serious at first about the salt and pepper nails but after I scrolled down to potting soil I started cracking up. This is hilarious, and genius!
Ten bucks says Ciate tries to trademark these.
*waits for Ciate to claim all of these as their own ideas* lol
LOL This has made my day better, and Suddenly I want BBQ!

I actually honestly like the potting soil ones! What about coconut on white?
CRAY. ZEE. Glad you are having some fun!! Is it weird to think the potting soil nails actually looked pretty cool?
LOL! This is one of the funniest things I’ve seen all day!
Lmao I love the soil one, has a nice looking texture!
So funny…. thanks for the chuckle.. gotta say I agree with you about the ridiculousness of some of the “trends”….still laughing…..
Tikibwana´s last post…Garden Tour
Hilarious, but not so far fetched for me since I tried a fuzzi-cure using my husband’s faux grass terrain from his collection of paints and textures he uses on his miniatures. 🙂
The potting soil nails are actually pretty cool looking.

What? No broccoli nails? You’re behind the times! ;p
So as I was reading the salt and pepper nails I was thinking, “Man, is she serious?” I lost it at the potting soil. hahahaha Good one!

I saw the salt one a few weeks ago, but this cracked me up! I like the BBQ one!
Wait someone did salt??? Were they serious?
<3 this!! Too funny and so creative!!
Thought you were going nuts (I remembered your candy nails from recently and so initially thought this was serious) until I got to the end, haha! I actually really love the look of the sesame seed one, though… ah, nail art.
Best post EVER! Thank you. 🙂
LOL! Midway through this post, I had to wonder if it was somehow April 1st again…
Haha! I love this! The potting soil one looks good in a weird, fuzzy, makes me want to pet it sort of way..
Those looks are hilarious! I wouldn’t be able to do the salt and pepper though, esp sea salt! WAY too gritty.
Lol, don’t forget to get the patent on these before Ciaté ‘invents’ them…:D
Haha, these are great! I especially love the spice rub and sesame seed ones! Just don’t let Ciate steal these. 😉
Kelly´s last post…Cult Nails NYC Meetup & Swag!
I acutally love the texture of the potting soil one! If only you could control the mess…
I was thinking is this a late April Fool’s post?!! Too funny!!! 🙂
I rub my eyes to much, lol
Pink peppercorns!
This totally made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that!
LOL, this post is very funny. Let’s see who will attempt to steal these and pls, anyone who takes this seriously should get a life hahaha
LOL! This is hilarious. I love that you did this and took pictures!
…can I admit that I sort of like the BBQ Spice Rub nails? It looks like really cool glitter!
The Lacquer Tracker´s last post…New Pirate Polish lacquers! (Swatches Part 4)
how did you ever get those off of your nails? soak your fingers in acetone? lol. i have enough problems with glitter and flakies!
All of these came off super easy, much easier than actual glitter!
Love DIY and love earthy looks – it’s just me…but these are too lumpy. I might try 1 or 2 putting ’em into a pulverizing grinder to get them down to almost powder like. I hate ‘crunch’ on my nails.
This wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, I wouldn’t wear any of these!
I think I just discovered the thing that will stop me from biting my cuticles!!!! For real!!

Jammies´s last post…China Glaze Bohemian Collection: Unpredictable
You are a total HOOT! I predict we’ll be seeing chipped, dirty polish as the next “runway” trend…
:()
Well, they could become quite functional if you need to prepare a meal or go out to eat and need some salt on your food:) this is pretty cool though…but I think I’ll stick to rhinestones and studs.
OMG you are so funny and really quite creative!!!
Ha! Came home from a lousy day at work and this cracked me up. Thanks for that!
Oh this just cracks me up! I really need to do the salt and pepper one. Then when the hubs tells me his dinner is too bland, I’ll start flicking my nails into his plate. lol

Swatch And Learn´s last post…MAC Candy Yum-Yum Lipstick Swatches & Review
Lol great post
Yeah this nail trend of sticking everything to wet polish sounds so unhygienic to me, and for impractical too. Almost puts me off as much as the long acrylic 3d nails with piercings and all. How do they wipe their ass with this crap??
hahahahahahaha! Love this 😀
OMG this is sooo funny! BBQ Spice is definitely my fav!!! Seems like we can put anything on our nails nowadays!
That was hilarious!
I wouldn’t hold your breath my dear. You just might be on to something. I know you did it just for fun & a joke but these look better than the cavier nails in my opinion. I actually love the spice rub. The colors are awesome & the rub isn’t has textured. You never know you i don’t think we are far off of these nails. I feel as if everything else has been done.
I loved this & thanks for making me laugh. Great post. I loved it. You could call the dirt on the “Garden Nails” cuz that’s what mine look like after I get done gardening. Hehe
This is great! I kind of want to try the sesame seed nails though they’re awesome

MeganNoel´s last post…Julep’s Daisy and Mila
LOL This was just hilarious, but you know? Thing is.. some of them actually look cool. Might try some of them myself! 😉
So I guess it will be a telltale sign that someone doesn’t wash their hands after using the loo when these manicures last for more than 1/2 a day!
This made me laugh – love the potting soil nails! Glad to see some humor in the beauty blogging world 🙂
Potting soil nails… ha ha ha. It looks similar to the velvet nail trend.
Haha love it. The weirdest non-polish item I put on my nails was definitely salt on my tips for a margarita mani. Not joking, I seriously did it 🙂
lol! at first, im looking thinking “is this a new trend?” cause i know fo’ sure im not putting bbq spice rub or potting soil on my nails lol ill go bare first! Great post i needed to laugh today!”)
Aaaand OPI is coming out with a liquid sand polish series this spring… I think they totally riffed off your trending self.
I am doing a matte, suede, and unusual texture for November. I am going to to do a Monkey See Monkey Do one of these ideas and reference this post on my blog!
Cute. Love your website.
Say, I would think a gal should be careful going to the bathroom with those “BBQ Spice Rub Nails.” y’think? heh
