POW! KABOOM! MAC Wonder Woman collection for spring 2011 has landed and what a sight she is!
Packed with vibrant and fun colors, this collection is most definitely not for anyone looking for subtlety. Especially with their packaging. 🙂
I know a lot of people are adverse to this type of loud in-your-face packaging, but quite frankly for me if it was anything different it wouldn’t be Wonder Woman. You can’t really be true to the character and D.C. Comics if you just slapped a sticker on it and called it a day.
This is a 27-piece collection (not including makeup bags, brushes and other accessories), so let’s get started on taking a look-see.
MAC Wonder Woman Bulletproof Blue Makeup Bag ($30)
This rather large-sized makeup bag comes in both blue and red and is covered with a metallic finish.
MAC Wonder Woman Utility Belt with: mixed face/eye brushes ($49.50)
This smaller bag comes with a “utility belt” and either the 3 piece eye brush set or 3 piece face brush set.
MAC Wonder Woman Invincible Mirror ($20)
The Invincible Mirror is a round Wonder Woman mirror that comes in a gold lame carrying case
Mineralize Skinfinish ($35)
- Pink Power – Peachy rose with pink shimmer/Soft rosy bronze/Soft shell pink with fine shimmer
- Golden Larait – True coral with fine gold shimmer/Soft suntanned bronze/Soft gold with fine shimmer
These are pretty large compacts, I must say. I mean LARGE, not that that’s a bad thing necessarily, just something to be aware of.
I don’t normally find these to be all that useful and I rarely use them. I do like that the three colors in each one blend together nicely and they do give the skin a nice glow. I think Pink Power is perfect for fair skinned folks whereas Golden Larait might be a bit too orange/muddy for me.
Powder Blush ($24)
- Mighty Aphrodite – Warm peach coral with gold pearl/Bright coral pink with gold pearl
- Amazon Princess – Bright yellow-pink/Deep blue pink with gold pearl
Both of these blushes are gorgeous colors and worked very nicely with my skin. I like the fact that they have a mirror on the inside of them and I think the gold around the edge is a nice touch. The colors blend together really nicely also and they feel very pigmented and soft.
Powder Blushes: Amazon Princess, Mighty Aphrodite. Mineralize Skinfinish: Golden Larait, Pink Power
Eye Quad ($40)
- Valiant – Light lime with yellow pearl (Frost)
- Spinning Transformation – Deep olive bronze with yellow pearl (Frost)
- Diana Undercover – Dark forest green (Satin)
- Manila Paper – Pale frost white gold (Veluxe Pearl)
- Defiance – Iridescent white pink (Veluxe Pearl)
- Paradise Island – Soft warm pink (Satin)
- Star Studded – Mid-tone violet pink (Satin)
- Real Drama – Dark burgundy with pink pearl (Satin)
- Lady Justice
- Lady Justice – Bright silver with white pearl (Frost)
- Insurmountable – Dirty blue grey (Veluxe Pearl)
- Bold Babe – Deep metal blue with white pearl (Frost)
- Deep Truth – True dark blue (Frost)
The shadows in these eye quads aren’t the most opaque when comparing to most regular MAC shadows. Some felt chalky and like I had to REALLY work to even get the color to show up on my hand. More below.
L to R: Manila Paper, Valiant, Diana Undercover, Spinning Transformation
Of the three eye quads I think this was my favorite one. The colors seemed a bit more opaque here than the others and I am a green fan. I love Spinning Transformation, it’s just gorgeous.
L to R: Defiance, Paradise Island, Star Studded, Real Drama
This quad was my least favorite of the three. The first two colors were very pale and the third felt a little chalky to me. I did like Real Drama, but not enough to buy this whole quad. In general I am not a huge fan of pink eyeshadow anyway, so I’m not surprised this was my least favorite one.
L to R: Lady Justice, Insurmountable, Bold Babe, Deep Truth
This quad had some solid good colors in it but also a few that were not so great. The first two are fairly pale and not very pigmented. I love Bold Babe, it’s stunning and very pigmented. Deep Truth is nice, but I already have it
- Marquise d’ – Sandy cream peach (Lustre)
- Russian Red – Intense blueish-red (Matte
- Spitfire – Bright creamy magenta – (Satin)
- Heroine – Brown bronze (Frost)
Russian Red has long been one of my top favorite red lipsticks. It is the absolute perfect red color for me, a very cool toned red. It claims to be a matte, but it’s not a dry or chalky textured matte. You do get moisture from it, but perhaps not as much as from of the other formulas.
Spitfire is really rather nice, I wound up liking it a lot more than I expected. It’s bright, but not TOO bright so it’s totally wearable. It feels very creamy and buildable.
Marquise d’ is a pretty, yet rather subtle pale pinky peach color. I like it a lot and it would be great as a “grab-n-go” type of lipstick where you don’t need a lip liner, etc.
Heroine is a warm brown/bronze and definitely not the kind of color I would ever wear. I am not a fan of brown lipstick, it tends to look very dated and 1980’s to me. Even so this color just is too warm for my skin tone, but it might work nicely on darker skin.
L to R: Russian Red, Spitfire, Marquise d’, Heroine
- Emancipation – Pale neutral pink
- Wonder Woman – Bright red with soft pearl
- Athena’s Kiss – Bright blue fuchsia
- Secret Identity – Mid-tone copper with soft pearl
If you are looking for a lipgloss that will have everyone stare at you when you whip it out, this is your best bet. These Lipglass tubes are HUGE! Not only are they large, the wand is *really* stuck in the tube so you kind of have to tug it out. Be careful of flinging the product all over when you do so, I did it about 5 times yesterday alone 🙂 The applicator itself is also larger which is kind of nice actually for me.
The formula is pretty much the standard, opaque, yet sticky.
This is another color that is too warm for me, but would probably look great on others. It’s a nice coppery/sugar-brown kind of color.
LOVE at first sight. I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed in this color and I’m not. It’s a gorgeous bright blue-based pink. This is definitely the one to get of the four in my opinion, and it’s the most opaque.
This one is a great cool-toned red. I am always wary of wearing red lip gloss because when I wear red lipstick I use a lip liner to keep it from bleeding. This looks like it could bleed easily, but I haven’t yet worn it to test that assumption. It is very pretty though.
This was one I didn’t think much of until I saw it on my lips and wow, it’s fabulous! It’s such a nice peach/pink color. I have already worn it the last two days and love it. Great neutral color and it’s my second favorite.
L to R: Secret Identity, Athena’s Kiss, Wonder Woman, Emancipation
Here is a comparison of a regular sized Lipglass and the Wonder Woman ones. Crazy!
Penultimate Eye Liner ($19.50)
- Rapidblack – True black
I am not much of a fan of the Penultimate liner and this one is just gigantic. It’s like a huge Sharpie! These are not forgiving for someone without incredible liner skills, which I don’t have. I much prefer a softer tip that gives when you drag across your eye, and these have a hard marker-like tip.
I also find with these that the black doesn’t stay TRUE black all the way across the lid, it kind of runs out, then you have to go back over it. Pass.
Opulash in Victorious ($15)
I am loving these four Opulash mascaras, especially the colored ones! Victorious is bright and fun. Normally I wear colored mascaras over a black because my lashes are a bit light. I think this would work really nicely on it’s own though.
Opulash in Themyscira
Themyscira is a really great, bright blue. I wore it today on it’s own and it provided enough color for my lashes to look dark and yet still very obviously blue.
Opulash in Army of Amazons
Army of Amazons
Army of Amazons is my first green that isn’t a bright one, its more subdued and really quite nice. I wore it yesterday over a black and the tips of my lashes really popped!
Opulash in Bad, Bad, Black
Bad, Bad, Black
Bad, Bad, Black is a great, true black color.
L to R: Victorious, Army of Amazons, Bad, Bad, Black, Themyscira
Pigments and Reflects Glitter ($21)
- Marine Ultra Pigment – Vivid marine blue
- Bright Fuchsia Pigment – Bright magenta
- Reflects Bronze Reflects Glitter – Sparkling rich gold
- Reflects Pearl Reflects Glitter – White glitter with pearl sheen
I am a big fan of MAC pigments in general, but neither of these colors did a whole lot for me.
Reflects Glitter on the other hand I am not a fan of. It’s just too messy, even if the colors are pretty.
Reflects Glitter and Pigments
L to R: Bright Fuchsia, Marine Blue, Reflects Bronze, Reflects Pearl
Bright Fuchsia is a pretty color, but fuchsia on my eyes isn’t something I often go for. Marine Blue seemed a bit patchy and not as pigmented as I would like.
Reflects Pearl is very gritty feeling and sparse looking. Reflects Bronze showed up more, but still had that grainy feel. Not a fan of these.
Nail Lacquer ($15)
- Spirit of Truth – Navy blue
- Obey Me – True red
What would this collection be without these perfect blue & red nail lacquers? Even though the colors might not be ground-breaking, they fit in so well with the rest of the collection.
Spirit of Truth
This is a really nice, medium navy blue creme. This was extremely opaque, you could easily do one coat but I did two. Pretty color but as mentioned not ground-breaking. I love that the logo is on the bottle though and the caps are red, which makes them “special” in my collection.
This is a very nice, bright true-red creme. This color wasn’t as opaque as the other and even after two coats (which I used here) you can see my nail line, so use three for full coverage. It’s a great Wonder Woman red!
Wearing Valiant Eye Quad and Army of Amazons mascara
I am wearing:
Vailant eye quad, all four colors on eyes (with MAC Feline on lower waterline only)
Army of Amazons mascara
Mighty Aphrodite blush
Pink Power Skinfinish
Goofing off with same eye/face look but wearing Russian Red Lipstick.
I am wearing:
Lady Justice Eye Quad – Deep Truth, Insurmountable (as liner on top & bottom) and Bold Babe. MAC Feline on lower waterline only
Amazon Princess blush
Athena’s Kiss Lipglass
I think this is overall a pretty good collection. There are some things that aren’t that great for me which are the eye quads, penultimate liner, pigments and glitters. However I really like the blushes, lipglasses, lipsticks and mascaras, so that kind of makes up for the others. I really like the packaging, because it suits the entire purpose of the Wonder Woman theme. If it had been done cheaply (like say Dame Edna) I would have been very disappointed.
