The limited edition MAC Helmut Newton collection celebrates the life and gorgeous photography of German-born Helmut Newton. Helmut Newton was often featured in fashion magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair and he managed to capture super erotic and glamorous shots of women. And you might say he died in kind of a “glamorous” Hollywood way also. His car sped out of control on Sunset Boulevard in 2004, after coming out of the famous Chateau Marmont Hotel, and he hit a wall and died later at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. His ashes are buried near Marlene Dietrich in Berlin.
The collection is small and includes an eye shadow quad, three nail lacquers, three Retromatte lip shades, a liquid liner and a mascara.
Real Fantasy is a light eggshell matte.
Hard Currency is a light grey matte.
Point “N” Shoot is a black matte.
Influential is a cool-toned brown satin.
High Heels is a bright red.
Chateau M is a deep vivid red.
Call Time is a warm-toned light grey creme. This is two coats.
Monte Carlo is a bright red creme. This is two coats.
Berlin is a deep red/purple creme. This is three thin coats.
Let’s start off with the eye shadow quad. It was actually better than I expected it to be. Lately their quads, especially the matte ones, are just really lacking in the pigmentation department. These are decently pigmented and didn’t swatch all patchy like they usually do. I like all these colors but they aren’t really unique. Good neutrals though.
The Retromattes are fabulous colors, especially if you love red lips. They are on the dry side though, so I have to wear a balm underneath if I wear them for long. I didn’t swatch the mascara (sorry) but it’s nice and black, really good at separating lashes and it’s very non-clumpy. The wand is smaller, which I prefer because I don’t have a huge set of lashes and this seems to get to even the smaller lashes.
The nail colors are nice, but again nothing unique really. I am really glad they reformulated their lacquers because they are so much better and more even than they used to be!
