Why Fake Nails are Tacky

ist2 2729779 hand with long acrylic nails Why Fake Nails are TackyOk before you start verbally attacking me please understand that I myself was a victim of these seemingly innocent, gleaming, smooth tips for many years. A decade or so ago, in my mid 20′s, I decided (not for the first time) to get acrylic nail tips. My reasoning was because I could NOT get polish to last on my nails for more than 24-48 hours and it drove me bonkers! I knew that with acrylic the polish stuck hard and therefore I wouldn’t have the chipping issues. That turned out to be true, however, I discovered that because my nails grow incredibly fast, I was having to get them filled every week or the cuticle area looked terrible. I was going to the nail salon every Friday evening and spending $20 or so a week. I also discovered that I am incredibly anal retentive when it comes to my nails (among other things) especially when I am spending good money; I expect them to be perfect. It would drive me WILD when one was slightly longer than the other, or slightly crooked or (God forbid) a bubble or hair appeared in the polish and the technician would happily go about her business as though everything was fine. Meanwhile I would have to be “that girl” and point out every flaw and have her fix it or I swear I would not be able to sleep that night.Â

Things went especially haywire when I discovered the french manicure. Talk about needing perfection, that white tip better be the same thickness on every nail and the same depth of white! It seriously drove me nuts. Aside from all that though, I never once thought the nails looked natural enough. And let me just say I like my nails very short, just maybe 1/4 inch above the tip of my finger, so it’s not like I had dragon claws or anything. They always just felt fake and thick even though I was going to a woman who was really great at getting them thin. So after a few years of this, I gave up and just had my natural nails. Then when I was about 30, I began work somewhere new where everyone had nice nails and I started to crave my *white whale* which was the flawless french manicure that was shiny, natural looking and never, ever chipped. This time I decided to try gel nails, not really knowing anything about them other than people at work had them and it looked good. I went to a new place since the woman I used to go to was long out of the business by then. I tried acrylic there first (because it was cheaper) and the man who worked there was absolutely flawless with his french tip application, he used an air brush and was really amazing. However, I still felt like they were these thick tacky appendages on my nails. So I went with gel the next time. Well, little did I know, they were giving me the fake gel treatment that is so very common in the cheap strip mall “salons”. They did everything exactly the same way as they did with acrylic only they topped it off with gel polish and cured it. It looked like CRAP people! It was all lumpy and gross and I was more than a little peeved. Clearly they didn’t know what they were doing. It was only later I discovered that this technique is a total scam and not the correct way to do gel. I tried probably 4 other salons around and not a single one of them did a good job OR did it the correct way. It was all acrylic topped with gel.Â
My next and last test was to try the silk wrap. I met a woman at work with absolutely gorgeous nails and she told me where she got them done so I went to her technician. Finally someone who had a CLEAN salon and knew what she was doing! They looked really great and since it was my own nail with just a thin layer of silk on them, they really looked more natural. The only issue was…my damn cuticles!!! I still have ridiculously fast growing nails so within a week I felt I needed a fill. Since this place was higher end and silk is more expensive, I just couldn’t fork over the cash every week for fills so I gave up the fake nails altogether. It’s been about 3 years since I’ve had anything other than polish on my nails and I am very happy about that!
My final conclusion regarding fake nails is that they are tacky because they never, ever, (ever!) look real. I can spot them a million miles away no matter how amazing the technician is. And here’s the rub, one thing that makes them look fake is how perfect they can be, so it’s a catch-22 as far as I’m concerned. I will stick to changing my chipped polish every 48 hours thank you very much!Â
And now for an incredibly accurate and hilarious video from comedian Anjelah Johnson…

Welcome to VampyVarnish!

Welcome to my blog! A bit about me: I am a professional with a “normal” job who also has a fixation with nail polish (varnish, lacquer, paint, glaze, whatever) and makeup (especially MAC and Urban Decay). I also hold a degree in English and rarely have a chance to write (although I am an AVID reader) so this is my opportunity! As you can probably tell from the title of my site, I’m into vampy colors. And by vampy I mean anything that is dark, be it blue, green, gray, black, purple, red or brown. I also am into colors that are off the beaten path and not seen on everyone such as: olive green (lemming alert: I MUST own China Glaze Out On Safari, can anyone help??) mushroom or gray. Although those previously mentioned colors are my favs, I also like a lot of lighter colors as well as silvers, metallics and such. I will tell you right now I could do without most medium red’s and pink’s. Too safe and boring for me! Luckily I work at a company where we can wear whatever we want so I get to experiment on a daily basis if I so choose.Â

I have only just begun to experiment with my nail picture taking so please bear with me. I am trying to figure out what the best lighting and other factors are so the ones I have already taken may not be the best. I might have to invest in a light box since my house is pretty dark inside. Any pointers would be much appreciated!Â

I also want to give MAJAH props to a couple blogsites/websites that inspired me to start my own. The Polish Addict, All Lacquered Up, Scrangie and Makeup and Beauty Blog, specifically. I am an avid reader of these (among many others) and am highly impressed with both the professionalism of the writing and the great pictures. Thanks for all you do, I would be honored to have you read my site someday! Â

One final note for now, I would like to introduce you to my side-kicks who will probably be featured quite a bit on the site since my other obsession is animals (and cupcakes and the Fleur De Lys symbol in case you couldn’t tell…)
