Top Ten Tuesday – My Favorite Primers

Top Ten Primers

Happy Tuesday! Today I’ve got my top ten primers for you. This is a category where some products pretty much stay the same year after year but others change as new ones come out.

As you might suspect the eyeshadow primers are the ones that tend to stay the same for me. And actually they are the single-most miraculous beauty product ever invented as far as I’m concerned. I’ve said this before but in case you’re newer to my site, here’s some background on why I think they’re so great.

I have hooded eyes and until eye primers started coming out I suffered from horrifically creasing eyeshadow all the time. In fact no matter what I tried and no matter the brand or type of eyeshadow, I would have terrible creasing within a couple hours, and it would only get worse as each hour passed. I spent a BUTT-LOAD of time smoothing out my eyeshadow and patting down creases with my finger. ARGH! But then primers came along and my life was complete. ;)

Top Ten Primers-2

Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($20), Milani Eyeshadow Primer ($6.49), Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($24)

Too Faced Shadow Insurance: This one has been in my top favorites for many years now. I love it because it’s invisible, helps my shadow last a good 12-14 hours easily and eyeshadows are easy to blend over it.

Milani Eyeshadow Primer: Now this is a slightly newer discovery since I think it just came out early last year, but it rapidly became a fave. It’s as great as the Too Faced one but less expensive and easy to find in drugstores!

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion: UDPP was my first ever real eyeshadow primer and so she will always have a special place in my heart. I find my eyeshadow lasts forever when I use this, with nary a crease in sight.

Top Ten Primers-3

MAC Prep + Prime Colour Correcting SPF 30 ($30), Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer ($34), Smashbox Photo Finish Luminizing ($38)

MAC Prep + Prime Colour Correcting SPF 30: This one recently came out and has four different “shades”: Adjust, Illuminate, Neutralize and Recharge, which are all for different purposes. I used Neutralize and liked how it cut down on the redness in my cheeks and around my nose. Plus an SPF 30 is great!

Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer SPF 30: I really like this one because it’s not just a clear primer, it also has color. It comes in five shades and for me Light worked best. Love the silky finish and it does a great job of hiding imperfections and pores.

Smashbox Photo Finish Luminizing: Here s great one of you want some luminosity in your skin. Use it sparingly though because it cane get a little too shimmery if you go overboard. I tend to apply it only in certain areas on my face rather than all-over.

Top Ten Primers-4

Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Primer Potion ($31), Too Faced Primed & Poreless Pure ($30), NARS Pro-Prime ($34), Benefit Stay Flawless ($32)

Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Complexion Primer Potion: This one has a very soft and silky feel to it and it’s invisible on the skin. It works really nicely with the Naked Skin Foundation and I never need to touch-up oily spots when I use it because it lasts all day.

Too Faced Primed & Poreless Pure Oil-Free Skin Smoothing Face Primer For Sensitive Skin: Ahhh this has been one of my favorite face primers for awhile now. It’s clear, silky, oil-free and does an excellent job of smoothing out pores and flaws.

NARS Pro-Prime Light Optimizing Primer SPF 15: I really like this one because it feels super smooth going on, almost like a creamy moisturizer rather than a primer. It’s also oil-free and never feels heavy or sticky on my face. The fact that it has SPF 15 in it is a bonus. Great primer!

Benefit Stay Flawless 15-Hour Primer: Aside from the ridiculously cute packaging, this stuff is pretty nice. I like the stick-formula it’s kind of fun to apply. It’s also perfect for traveling since it’s small and won’t cause a liquid-y mess if it opens. Great for spot priming!

I love my UD Primer Potion, I haven’t tried the anti aging one yet! I’ve been using the Maybelline Baby Skin, works pretty well for me

I honestly didn’t really see any difference between regular UDPP and this one, from what I remember when I compared them.

I love the stay matte by rimmel for the face and too faced for the eyes

So many people love the Too Faced one, it’s so great.

What a fun post! I have the TF face primer and like it with some foundations but not others. I’ve learned that I can’t expect one primer to work with everything because the ingredients aren’t always complementary. I’d like to get the NARS primer next because it is water based as are many of my favorite foundations. TFSI is my favorite eyeshadow primer and seems to fare better on my lids than UDPP. I wish the anti-aging UDPP would work well on my lids as that is my trouble area with early aging.

Yes you are so right about certain combos not working. Definitely try the NARS one, it has such a great consistency.

I totally agree! Sometimes it becomes hard to judge the primer based on what you paired it with, so playing around is key. :)

I am so with you on the miracle that is eye primers. I remember finding one years before they become popular, and then it was discontinued and I went without for quite a few years. I think my current favorite is by Bare Minerals, followed by TFSI.

I use the Loreal primer for my face (too lazy to go look in the bathroom right now)…and i use the Milani primer on my eyes. I first one i ever used was Urban Decay..

    • February 25, 2014

Isn’t the Milani one great? Best drugstore version I have ever found.

  • February 25, 2014

TF Shadow Insurance is pretty great. I use it during the winter. I like UD Eden for the spring and summer, since I have super, super oily lids. I just wish UD would make a version of Eden that came in a range of shades, so I could use a color that doesn’t look so pale and ashy on my darker skin.

Mind you, so does concealer on the eyelids, for me :-P

Have you tried the eyeshadow primer by theBalm? It’s so good- better than TooFaced and UDPP (especially the colored ones).

  • February 25, 2014

Now I have a list and it’s all your fault! I’ve got to check out Nars and Benefit more closely now. I used to use the original Nars and then forgot all about it.

I really want to try Too Faced Primed & Poreless Pure Oil-Free Skin Smoothing Face Primer For Sensitive Skin now! :) My skin is very easily angered/super sensitive so it sounds perfect. I have yet to find my HG face primer.

I will always love Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Urban Decay Primer Potion. I got a sample of the Urban Decay Anti-Aging one shown in your photo – really excited to try it. I still need to try the Milani one! As soon as another tube is finished from my stash I’m going to get the Milani primer. Super excited to hear it’s like TFSI because that is my all time favorite. :D

  • February 28, 2014

Great list! I feel like I’m the only person who hasn’t tried Too Faced Primed Poreless. I love Shadow Insurance so I don’t know why I haven’t picked it up yet.
