2012 Year in Review

2012 Year in Review

2012 was a very strange year for me and it started off so great! I started off the year knowing I would be quitting my job to blog full-time. That was such an exciting time for me because I knew I would be doing something I loved every day.

Everything went according to plan up until right before my 40th birthday in mid-June. Coincidence? Hmmmm I wonder. To make a long story short between June-December I dealt with ocular migraines, kidney stones, depression & anxiety, C. Difficile, a surgery for Mr. VV and 5 stitches in my finger and nail. FUN.

Aside from health related issues, blogging from home hasn’t been all that I imagined it to be. No regrets about taking the chance on it because I would have always wondered, but I have discovered it’s not for me. It takes a certain personality type to want to be home alone constantly, and that personality just isn’t me!

Blog Accomplishments:

  • Back in October/November I was on the Wet n Wild Beauty Blogger displays in Walgreens across the US, which was pretty amazing!
  • I quit my job in March to blog full time – then discovered I didn’t like it! Still an accomplishment I think.

Blog Stats:

  • I had over 3.3 million visits.
  • More than 7.7 million pageviews.
  • 1.4 million unique visitors.

Top viewed posts:

I am noticing a pattern that nearly all of these posts are nail polish or have nail related items in them… :)

I really hope that 2013 is an amazing year because 2011 wasn’t that great, and 2012 was even worse! It MUST get better…right?

Thanks for sticking around throughout the years!

-Kelly

Kelly, you have a great attitude about it – it definitely is an accomplishment, you built something up and reached a goal you set for yourself (one that just happens to be incredibly difficult to achieve, too) Finding out what doesn’t work for you is as important as finding out what does. I think it would be REALLY hard for anyone to be home alone most of the time, even if doing something they love. I’ve wondered about that a lot specifically with beauty bloggers, but I never heard others talk about it so I thought maybe I was just weird. But I’ve wondered what it’s like to be home all day working alone – I mean, firstly, the level of pure self-discipline to get yourself to stay on track but also just… I don’t know, it seems it could get very lonely. I know I would feel that way. Maybe there should be like, a beauty blogger office, where all the full-time beauty bloggers go in and work together, have all the photography equipment and products there… haha I don’t know. But anyway, I just wanted to echo what you said, it’s still something to be very proud of, and here’s to a great 2013! :)

You know I always thought I would be fine being alone all the time because I wasn’t really social at work at all. But just being around other people makes everything so much more “normal”. I honestly have NO clue how the other beauty bloggers do it and are ok with it. I think some of them struggle with it like me, or maybe they have tons of friends they go out and have lunch with, etc. I dunno, but it’s not a job for anyone who wants to stay sane, haha!

      • December 29, 2012

Honestly, if you look at some full-time bloggers *cough*Temptalia*cough* They seem to have no friends at all and seem to make up for it by spitting out dozens of blog posts a day (written like a bachelor thesis) and talking to their dogs all day. Consider yourself normal :)
I hope next year will be much better for you, especially health wise. Will you get back into your old job though?

          Sparkle

You apparently have never read her blog, she just finished college not that long ago, recently got married and she spends a lot of time with her family, I’m sure she also has friends. Kinda silly to assume that just because a person includes pics of their pet, that must be all they have. You shouldn’t be so rude.

I found this comment from mania offensive. I’m currently disabled after suffering multiple chronic injuries, and I’m in my 20s. I’m in too much pain to even go grocery shopping on most days. I’m married, but I spend 99% of my days inside the house. I’m unemployed as well due to the pain. Would you say I’m a weirdo because I stay in the house all day? I actually have many online friends that I talk to daily, so I’ve never felt lonely, and I also talk to my cats. I would consider it cold and callous not to talk to your pets, but that’s my opinion u_u You don’t know Temptalia’s personal life. She too may have daily convos with friends online. It doesn’t make her a bad person or STRANGE. Why did you even say this comment? You not only insulted Temptalia, but other disabled people like me who seemingly have no friends and can’t go outside :( I don’t like to think of myself as a weirdo. Please don’t judge others. You may find yourself in my situation someday. Maybe then you’d be less quick to judge others. . .

I hope 2013 is amazing for you!

Does this mean you’re going to start another job, and go back to blogging part time rather than full time? Feel free not to answer, of course!

I think I’m actually the type who would love to blog as a full time job – I am currently unemployed and love being home alone, I wish my blog was enough to support me. But, perhaps it would be different if it were an obligation rather than just a hobby.

Yep, I have been looking for a couple months now. I always thought I was the type also because I too like being alone, and I wasn’t social at work. But after 6 months of constant alone-ness and being stuck in my house, I discovered it’s definitely not my cuppa tea. And what you said about it changing if it’s an obligation not a hobby is SO true. I definitely had more “fun” blogging when I didn’t have to. Funny thing is, my blogging schedule is nearly the same. I still post almost the exact same amount as I did when I was working outside!

      • December 29, 2012

Good luck with the search! I’m a PhD student, and I work from home often, so it’s not really a big deal for me. I’m a bit of a loner to begin with. ;) It’s interesting what you say about your blogging frequency, how it hasn’t changed much. I do believe that if under pressure you can find a way to complete the task in less time. More time and a job just gets drawn out. I do admire how you managed to get your blog to a level that you could quit your job. Very few beauty bloggers that I know of are able to do that. :)

Good luck on your job search, I’m sure you’ll find something good (and flexible, hopefully, to help with blogging!)

It really makes sense about the obligation / fun hobby dichotomy.

I think 2012 was the year of the indie polishes – and except for the huge polish companies who have their collections planned out for 4-5 years in advance with little move in room – I think we will see some fab collections from some of the main line polish companies that start to bring some of the amazing toppers like Cult Nails has made this yr – and also the glitter sandwiches in a bottle , I expect to see more of those coming from main line companies. I did think this yr we saw a HUGE increase in better selections coming from the lower $ end polishes like Sinful Colors, Revlon and other drug store brands I typically don’t look at. I think we will see a ton of cheaper versions of the knock off Clarins 230 this coming yr as well as cheaper versions of the gold flake like Zoya’s Guilty and OPI’s Man With The Golden Gun. I don’t think it was a bad year for polish.

Guess the stats show you that your audience responds most to your polish reviews over other beauty products. I know I certainly tune in for polish. I don’t buy that much of other beauty products. I know what I like and use. I also don’t like to keep buying and buying and end up not finding my favs because I have too many things taking up space. I finally got to the point where I don’t feel the need to try and try and try. I have fav brands and know what shades to mix and come up with new looks. I buy maybe 1 new eyeshadow pallet each year now – maybe a new blush. This year I threw away more than I bought!

I always love your blog, the quality, the selection of products you review, the honesty in your opinions, you’re by far one of my top favorite beauty blogs, right after temptalia!

  • December 29, 2012

I hope 2013 gets off to a good start, especially with your health issues– that’s never fun!

Even though you discovered it was hard for you to work from home, I think it’s amazing that you decided to quit your job and focus on beauty blogging full time. I hope in this new year you can find a good balance between doing what you love and being able to have social interactions on a day-to-day basis.

I have to say that while I initially started following your blog for the nail polish (and those are the posts I mainly comment on, as well), I still really enjoy your beauty posts because I am a lot more into makeup now after getting into nail polish.

For me it was finally the year that I fulfilled all my lemmings. And now I can happily ignore a release. : )

A side note, you should see if there’s a coworking space near you – you can work from there and be around other working humans (that are usually cooler than who you left behind at the office) but obviously still be doing your own thing. I know it has saved the sanity of many work from home peeps…

    Um

Hi, I commented a long while back on a Stila post complaining that you’d posted about the palettes but hadn’t swatched them. Just realized I sounded way more cranky than intended! I have been a long time reader and haven’t yet had a chance to express my gratitude for your blog. Seriously, the effort you put into it shows – it is at the top of my list of beauty sites. Thank you for your work and have a great new year!

  • December 30, 2012

I hope that 2013 will be your best year ever! Hoping the same for myself also, been a pretty bad year here too :( Husband battling with depression and so on.

I guess blogging is fun as long as it isn’t your job :P I just recently got back to my blog at full force. Even though I’m at home right now, not working, my too little girls take so much of my time I don’t have time to blog till they go to bed. I do my nails and/or makeup while the younger one naps. Feels like a job to me sometimes ;D

I have had years like your 2012 and I can absolutely tell you it gets better. CONGRATS on the fabulous stats on your blog and I’m hoping for you a 2013 that will surpass your wildest expectations! ♥

I totally understand how you feel. I too need to be around people. I’ve been at a small company for over 5 years now, good pay, nice boss, but I’m by myself most of the time running this company. My boss travels a lot, so besides the mailman or ups guy, no one else to see or talk too. Just staring at the parking lot. At first it was Ok, but it became so boring and even sad at times, that I can’t take it anymore. My husband lost his job, so I couldn’t quit. But I have made up my mind and I will quit this job soon. I will follow my heart this time. I’ve been so prudent for so long that I feel it’s time for a change. I have also decided to move back to my country of origin, after 11 years living in the US. It will be a _huge_ change in my life, but I’m finally ready to go for it. I want to wish you all the best in 2013, Kelli. I love reading your reviews and also seing Sammy & Chewbacca. I say, follow your heart and go after what makes you happy! <3

    Hey Kelly,
I wish you a happy and healthy 2013 and the same for Mr. VV, and of course Sammy and Chewy.

You made it through a rather difficult year, to say the least, but you’ve come out of it knowing much more about yourself and what does and does not make you happy. That itself is a major accomplishment.

Keep up the good work, the steady progress, and the rest will fall into place. I know of what I speak, believe me. Also, anyone who loves cats the way you do can’t go wrong!

    ((hugs))
