Scout the Wee Kitten

Scout Scout the Wee Kitten

Yesterday around noon Sammy was meowing and scratching at the back door, as he usually does when he wants out. This time though it was different.

Sammy was crying because he saw this little guy just sitting there on the grass out of the blue! We’ve never seen any stray kittens in nearly 10 years here, so it was kind of surprising. I think he’s only about 4-5 weeks old and was hungry. So of course, we gave him food and water.

While he was eating, this was happening on the other side of the screen door. Funnily enough it was Chewy, who is usually aggressive with Sammy and Squirt, who seemed the most calm about the kitten. He didn’t hiss or growl or act mean the entire time he was there, which was about 9 hours.

He’s quite brave. After eating he came over to the screen and was just staring at Chewy for quite a while. He was definitely more scared of us than our cats.

And there he is, Scout. When it got dark we brought his food and water inside because there are a lot of raccoons, ‘possums, a stray (I think) male cat (maybe his dad?) who come around from time to time. We put out a kennel with a blanket inside and left the screen door cracked and a light on to scare away other critters. But after staring at us through the screen door making us feel INCREDIBLY guilty for not letting him in, he wandered off around 9:30 pm and we haven’t seen him since. I would let him in if we didn’t have 3 other cats, but we don’t know what diseases me might have not to mention fleas, ringworm, mites, etc. We had a 3 month long epidemic of ringworm, ear mites and kitty cough when we brought what we thought was a *clean* Chewbacca home from a shelter. Lo and behold a few weeks later ringworm showed up, then mites and a cough which he passed along to my other two. No fun! I hope Scout comes back so we can try and get him to the vet and adopted out. Maybe. icon wink Scout the Wee Kitten

  • Such a cute little kitty!! I understand about not bringing them inside until after they’ve been checked. Our Boo adopted us, and just ran in the house (leaving his sick mother under our trailer) and we put them both in the bathroom overnight. Where I could bleach everything afterwards!

Was glad I did because she turned out to be a sweetie and gave us two more sweethearts <3

  • What a sweet little guy…I’m not sure I’d have the restraint to keep him outside. I visit the cats at my grandparents’ farm and I can’t resist picking them up and cuddling, even though I know they’ve got critters all over them. I just have to keep Rando away from the other cats (and me, after I visit them).

So glad he stuck around for a while and let you feed him! Hopefully he will be smart enough to come back for seconds.

I have experienced the feeling of doing the hard but responsible thing and not letting an outdoor cat near your existing indoor cats. It’s tough, but you can’t risk their lives :(

  • aaaaawwwww look at that face! such a cute lil’ kitty – hope he comes back so you all can help him out! I would have trouble not letting him in too. There’s a grey kitty that comes around here from time to time that my husband will put food out for – we think he belongs to the ppl diagonally across the street – I don’t know if they take very good care of him though b/c he seems to always be outside and hungry alot…. We thought about taking him in, but I know we have to be careful too because my cats stay indoors and I couldn’t bear for anything to happen to them.

So do you happen to watch “My Cat From Hell” on apl? funny stuff – you should check it out if you haven’t!
