Estee Lauder Metal Mania Pure Color Nail Lacquer Collection for Fall 2012 Swatches, Photos & Review

Remember when I posted Estee Lauder Viper recently? Well I made the mistake of searching swatch photos for shades from the new Pure Color Metal Mania Nail Lacquer collection and then somehow wound up buying four of them! Oops. :)

Now let me say that it’s a bit confusing which shade belongs to either the Beyond Black or Metal Mania collections. According to Estee Lauder’s website, the shades in Metal Mania are Smashed Exlploif, Chaos, Fiery Hot and Nouveau Riche and Beyond Black include Viper, Blue Blood, Black Plum, Caviar and Bete Noire. But on Nordstrom’s site under Metal Mania they also include Tempestuous, which isn’t listed on Estee’s site and they omit Bete Noire from the Beyond Black section. Confusing I know!

Chaos

Chaos

Chaos

Chaos is a silvery/grey with predominantly gold and blue shimmer. Pretty and smoky looking. This was three thin coats.

Explosif

Estee Lauder Explosif

Explosif

Explosif is a green/gold base with multi-colored shimmer. You can mostly see gold, blue and pink shimmer in this one. Love the base green because it’s like a pale olive shade. This was three thin coats.

Tempestuous

Estee Lauder Tempestuous

Tempestuous

Tempestuous has a blackened purple/grey base and heavy blue and violet shimmer. Words cannot describe how gorgeous this shade is and these photos do not capture how amazing it really looks. It’s a really unique shade and I think of all the Estee shades I have seen in Beyond Black and Metal Mania, this is the coolest one. This was two coats.

Smashed

Estee Lauder Smashed

Smashed

Smashed is a bright, yet deep violet base with bright violet and blue shimmer. This is a really nice jewel-toned shade and it totally glows. Again, my photos do not capture how amazingly sparkly it really is. This was two coats.

Overall: I really love all these shades and think they’re pretty unique and cool looking. But Tempestuous and Smashed are truly amazing.

Availability: Nordstrom, Estee Lauder.

Pricing: $20.00 for 0.3 oz.

What do you think of Metal Mania? Anything here you would fork over your bucks for?

-Kelly

I think I need Explosif and Smashed in my life! Explosif looks like a shade that I’d gladly wear as an eyeshadow. Too gorgeous! The collection finally launched here yesterday and I’m going to the counter tomorrow. Can’t wait!

Oh they looks amazing! I have Bete Noir, Viper (seen your swatch), Blue Blood and Black Plum here at home, ready to be played with. But I must say that Tempestuous is going up on my wishlist.

Tempestuous is stunning! Definitely my favorite of this collection.

They are all very pretty but a small bottle isn’t worth $20.

Chaos reminds me of the OPI Number One Nemesis I”m wearing right now

  • August 21, 2012

Chaos is my favorite of the four. Estee Lauder is really stepping it up! It’s nice to see brands that have been around forever breaking out of their comfort zone a bit.

Yes – the price point is silly on these…so just because of that I won’t go out of my way to locate them. We don’t have a dept store anymore for a good 200 miles…so it would be mail order to get these for me. I really have to want something bad to order from say Nordies on line. I don’t like to have to pack stuff up to return what I don’t like….despite Nordie is good about returns. These are lovely none the less. But price point and availability is usually important to me in getting new polish shades. I have too many now and am looking at doing a major downsizing…so getting a tish hardened over new shades other than a few from Essie, OPI and ChG that are easy for me to get.

  • August 21, 2012

All four of these are winners. I want them all!

I love all of these! I’m just not sure I can justify spending $80 to bring them all home with me *sigh*. If I had to pick just one? I think maybe Tempestuous or Explosif.

I agree with you. Although all of them are beautiful, I think that Tempestuous is the star of the show! Soooo tempted to buy a bottle of it, but I’m not sure if I want to shell out $20 for a tiny bottle. However, that colour looks pretty unique and would be worth it! Dilemma! ;)

I can’t find Tempestuous anywhere! Neither of my local Estee Lauder counters got it and I don’t even see it listed on the Estee Lauder website. Any ideas where to track this one down?

    • August 23, 2012

I mentioned in the post it’s listed on Nordstrom’s site.

Sorry, got distracted by the pretty swatches and didn’t page all the way back up to re-read the entire post (shame on me). That is confusing…I hate when some sites have it & others don’t for no rhyme or reason. Even how they’ve shipped them seems kinda messed up. My local counter got the tester for Smashed but didn’t receive any product to sell. Don’t companies understand this is very frustrating for both the salespeople and the customers? It’s not like it’s EL’s first rodeo ;-)

  • August 23, 2012

Me too! I did the same thing and ended up getting exactly the same shades, LOL!

The folks at Nordstrom during the anniversary sale said that Tempestuous is an exclusive to Nordstrom. And it’s so striking that the SA at the Lancome counter specifically pointed me over to the EL counter and told me to check it out. I was all set for my polish splurge of the summer to be Dior’s Shadow (from the Violets collection), but when I did one nail in that and one in Tempestuous, I knew which I had to get.

Tempestuous(NOT exclusive to Nordstrom!) is similar to Cult Nails Mind Control. Same base color, but Mind Control has only one color of microglitter compared to Tempestuous. Chaos is cooler toned than OPI Number One Nemesis think gunmetal slate/platinum grey for Chaos versus khaki greenish grey for Number One Nemesis. I LOVE all the new Estee colors! Wish I were a rich girl- i’d collect them ALL! For similar effect, try OPI Brand New Skates, OPI Number one Nemesis, Nicole by OPI For Gold Times Sake. and OPI Germanicure if you like Estee Dressed to Kill , OPI Suzi and 7 dusseldorfs if you like Estee Purple Velvet. See how obsessed I am with these colors???

Oops I take it back- it might be exclusive to Nordstrom- but I could have sworn I saw it somewhere else!

oh, and if you like Estee Black Turquoise, try NOPI Khloe had a Little Lam Lam. Estee Lauder has been my fave nail polish brand for awhile now and IMO they are the most under rated of all the luxury brands. I am hoping their new collections, and swatches like these, will change that. Gorgeous work here!

O.O WOW. Dude. There is some serious gorgeousauce going on here! Excuse me while I go pick my jaw up up off the floor and mop up the drool…

Before I gush over how beautiful they are though…have you seen the new Nicole Target exclusives for Fall 2012 (namely the three with the super-fine multicolored microglitter that are duochrome-y)?

Chaos kinda reminds me of Nicole For Gold Times Sake. Though there are lovely photos of For Gold Times Sake there is nothing like seeing it in person. It was mixed in randomly with the other NOPIs on the shelf and didn’t look like much until I picked up the bottle and held it up to some light. I was like OMG WHOA!!! Sparkly multicolored multichrome goodness!!! Just Bust A Mauve and If The Blue Fits… are the two other polishes in the collection with the same kind of finish. All three are amazing! (And I just know you’ll love Just Bust A Mauve because it’s got predominantly copper sparkles with strong contrasting blue sparkles amongst other colors!) :) That said…

The finish of these (that super fine super sparkly multicolored goodness) reminds me of those new NOPIs. I am in love with Explosif, Smashed…and Tempestuous…and Chaos! Ack! I love them all!

I guess I better get my fork ready; looks like I might have to get one or two…or maybe more if I’m naughty, lol! XD Buying an expensive polish is definitely a treat that I reserve for only the most SQUEEEEEEE inducing creations. I’m so happy to hear these are going to be at Nordstrom as this will give me a chance to see them in person and try the testers (if they have them). Hopefully certain ones will be more appealing to me than others and I won’t have one of those OMG THEY ARE ALL SO BEAUTIFUL CAN’T CHOOSE MUST HAZ ALL moments, lol! XD

Thanks so much for the beautiful swatches and fab review! <3

I bought Smashed yesterday..while I was at the Estee counter, I noticed Ultra Violet and decided to swatch it next to Smashed… they looked exactly the same to me! Maybe this is a repromote under a different name?
