Urban Decay Naked Skin for Fall 2012 Swatches, Photos & Review

New this fall from Urban Decay is Naked Skin!
Naked Skin is a liquid foundation that comes in an amazing 18 shades and is buildable. It gives medium to full coverage and a lightweight texture. Feels like your skin is in fact, naked.
It also has some interesting ingredients aimed at helping your skin.
- Matrixyl 3000 – anti-wrinkle and lifting peptide
- Litchiderm – derived from the Lychee fruit and protects skin from dehydration, stress and aging
- Sodium Hyaluronate – attracts and hold water in your skin helping it look smooth and soft
- Japanese Green Tea – calms and soothes your skin with anti-oxidants and promotes collagen production
- Vitamin E – hydrates and increase elasticity while fighting free-radicals
The bottle style is long and narrow with a pump applicator. I like this pump because it only took 4 quick pumps to get the product out for the first time, and it doesn’t give you too much.
They also have a specially designed brush to go with this foundation called the Optical Blurring Brush. This densely packed brush (synthetic) helps buff the product into your skin creating more of an airbrushed look.

0.5, 2.0, 3.5, 5.5, 7.5, 9.0, 12.0
They have a special numbering system also which helps with deciding your shade. Ones that end with a .5 are neutral/cool. Ones that end with a .0 are golden/warm.

Synthetic Optical Blurring Brush made from recycled PET bottles and recycled aluminum

0.5, 2.0, 3.5, 5.5
0.5 is a very light cool shade.
2.0 is a light warm/yellow shade. I thought this might be my shade, but right now it’s a wee bit too light for me.
3.5 is a light/medium cool shade. This is the one that worked for me, which kind of surprised me since normally I have warmer more yellow undertones than cooler.
5.5 is a medium warm shade.

7.5, 9.0, 12.0
7.5 is a medium cool shade, a bit deeper than 5.5.
9.0 is a medium/deep warm toned shade.
12.0 is a deep warm-toned shade.

Wearing Naked Skin 3.5
I do like the texture of this foundation. It feels lightweight and not oily at all. It covers nicely, and I love that you can build it up. The finish is a “demi-matte” so it’s not overly dewy or matte. It has light diffusing spheres which are supposed to make you look professionally re-touched. I’m not sure about THAT, but I do like the finish.
The first time I applied it I used shade 2.0 and applied it over a moisturizer that I had put on a few hours earlier. The shade didn’t work for me, but also it felt like it made my skin look a little dry. Next I tried shade 3.5 over a primer I had just applied (Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum) and it definitely made my skin look less dry. The brush really did help create a really nice soft finish. I love the brush with this foundation!
One other thing to note is it does have a “makeup-y” smell when applying it, but that goes away after a minute or so.
Overall: I like it, but I had to find my right “combo” of products to apply to my skin to prep it first. I do tend to be drier now than I was when I was in my 20′s or early 30′s, so my skin has to be very moisturized before I apply foundation. But now that I found my shade and used the brush with it, my skin looks really good!
Availability: Urban Decay, Sephora, Ulta and select Macy’s at the end of July.
Pricing: $38.00 for 1 oz. The Optical Blurring Brush is $24.00.
Will you be trying out Naked Skin?
-Kelly
Note: Urban Decay is cruelty free.

The reviews I’ve seen so far make me want to try that foundation! However UD is not available in Germany and ordering it online without knowing which shade I need is too risky considering the price

I might swatch 5.5 when I go to Sephora. In the bottle, I thought it looked too light for me.

I’m curious about this – I like that it’s lightweight and the demi-matte finish you describe. I’ll have to check this out, and I wonder how it’d fares on my ultra-sensitive skin.

Promising! I might have to wait for more people to try it out so I can figure out my shade, since I don’t get Urban Decay in either Belgium or Taiwan. The brush looks good too!

Wow, Kelly your skin looks fantastic! I’m very interested in this now, the shade 0.5 looks like it might be perfect for my fair skin. The only thing hard to justify is the price! Way more than I’d like to pay for an ounce of foundation.

Maybe you could do a post about foundations for dry skin sometime? I have a really dry skin and I’m yet to find a foundation that would work for me. So I just go without. Everything looks dry and cakey on me
I wouldn’t want to wear foundation daily but sometimes you just want to be extra pretty

I like the numbering system! I do find using a brush to blend my foundation is helping to get a more smooth look. Wondering how it will wear on oily skin.

I tend to go to drugstore for foundation but I am definitely intrigued by the brush!

Nice but I wish it was SPF.

Hey everyone, for those who are worried about finding the right shade, Urban Decay is giving out a sample of the foundation in 4 shades when you purchase online! And supposedly, a tool to guide your perfect shade is also included.
I still have a bit of ambivalence toward Urban Decay, after the recent “We’re going-to-sell-in-China-in-spite-of-our-much-publicized-anti-animal-testing-stance” thing, but this product may motivate me to give them another chance.
Do you think the shade 0.5 would work on a MAC NW15?
I love how the color looks on you! You couldn’t even tell you were wearing anything!

Would this be a good choice for someone who has combination/oily skin? I use Revlon Colorstay right now and it just doesn’t last!
Looks nice! I wish they would sell the brush and the foundation together when they launch it like Tarte did.
I like your eyelook too. What are you wearing?

My eye look is their Smoked Palette, which I showed right before this post.
Great review!
I’ll definitely have to check out 0.5 and see if it’s light enough?
For reference, what shade in MAC are you? :3
NC20
I’m definitely curious about this but not sure if I’ll try it or not. There have been so many good drugstore foundations coming out lately that I’m not sure if paying 3 times as much is even worth it. Right now I’m loving my L’Oreal True Match Lumi foundation so I’ll stick with that for a while.

when i first started hearing about this, i looked up the rest of UD face products and noticed a lack of WOC shades, so i figured i wouldn’t be able to even bother. but seeing that 12.0 is a pretty deep shade, i kinda have some hope now =).
but just a quick thing i noticed…you said the .5s are the cool shades, yet you described 12.0 as a cool shade…?
This is my concern as well. There seems to be a huge gap between 9.0 and 12.0. Sadly, I think I’d fall in that gap. Hopefully, they will expand their color selection.
Is the brush like a duo-fiber brush or more like a kabuki?
oh i don’t think there’s a gap…i think she just might have only received those particular shades for review. i’m sure they couldn’t give her ALL the shades, but they (thankfully) included a deeper shade for her to swatch.

Yeah there are other shades in-between, I didn’t get them all for review. The brush is more kabuki-like. Nice buffer.
Sorry mistake, it’s fixed now.
I was surprised, I thought .5 would be too dark and cool for me but it seems to be working well. I love the brush, too!

Interesting! I’m liking the range of shades available too. Will definitely be trying this out.
The brush is exciting, but it’s hard to get excited about foundations.
Your hair looks great!

Looks great on you!
I went to a UD counter today at Macy’s and got a match. They also gave me a little tub of sample that’s supposed to last for two weeks before buying. I actually might get the brush too since it’s not that expensive for a face brush.

I’m really looking forward to trying this foundation. My current foundation has been discontinued, and although I bought a couple before it went away, I’m almost out and am looking for a new HG product. It’s less expensive than what I currently use, so I am hoping it will be the one! Looks like they have a great range of shades.
I think your skin looks amazing in the picture
Really interested to try this one out. Have never tried any UD foundations since matching is a bit hard because we don’t have UD in our country. What she would you say is the closest to NC15 in MAC?

Ooo! 0.5 might just work for me! I have a REALLY hard time finding shades that are light enough for me while still being balanced (not too pink/chalky, not too yellow/sallow). Right now NARS Sheer Glow in Siberia is my HG. I will probably never stray from it but I am always on the lookout for new skin products that are available in very light shades. I will definitely be checking out 0.5 when it arrives at my local Ulta or Sephora. If I can find a good match in the line I’d really love to give Naked Skin a try!
Your skin looks great!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this product with all of us.
I’m loving the dark liner on your eyes – really makes them pop!

I definitely want the foundation and the brush!!!
I’ll have to check these out. Btw your eye makeup looks really pretty
I thought I was being paranoid when I noticed the dryness with certain products. It looked better when I applied it on top of my sunscreen and more dry on top of my mattifying primer.

I went to Sephora today and tried .5 on my wrist. The foundation felt great and I would like it, but it’s hard to justify the price with the brush. And now I’m wondering if I should try the 3.5 too. Thanks for the review!

I tried this and ended up returning it. It was lightweight but also strange and cakey on my skin. After awhile it started to look VERY unnatural and almost dried up and pulled my skin so that it appeared to have an odd texture. It also did not cover up anything on my skin. The coverage was more lightweight than my Clinique BB Cream. This one was not for me!
Good review! I am in my 20s w/very dry skin partly bc of hypothyroidism & I use benzoyl peroxide to control my acne so I haven’t yet figured out if this foundation is right for me. The couple times I used it my face was very dry & I didn’t like it. I haven’t found a primer that won’t break me out so I’m hesitant to use 1 under this foundation. I’ve been using Tarte’s maracuja oil on my face @ night so maybe ill try the Naked Skin again soon…
Thanks! Hope Naked Skin works out for you!
