MAC Beth Ditto Collection Swatches, Photos & Review

MAC Beth Ditto is a color drenched collection this summer. It features nail lacquers, lip pencils, lipcremes, colored mascaras, an interesting, if not confusing polka dotted powder, and shadow/liner pencils.
I’ll be honest. Up until this collection came out, I had never heard of Beth Ditto. Apparently she’s a singer with an indie band called Gossip. Definitely not an indie music fan, so that’s probably why I never heard about her! And now you know.

Powder To The People

Powder To The People

Powder To The People

Powder To The People
Powder To The People. Is it a blush, a face powder, a highlighter, a bronzer? I have no idea, but it looks cool in the pan. Aside from that though, I don’t really think it’s very usable. You can see all the colors swatched separately above. All swirled together is the last swatch, which looks very dirty and unattractive on me. Hmmm, is the general consensus from what everyone else has been saying about this powder. Hmmm.

Nail Lacquer

Life And Beth
Life And Beth is a pastel peach creme. Pretty darn streaky and even after three thin coats it didn’t get fixed completely. I don’t know why so many of MAC cremes are streaky like this! But it seems about 98% of them are, unfortunately. The color is nice and a bit different from others, but formula isn’t good.

Vagabondage
Vagabondage is a medium lavender creme. Now this formula was much better, less streaky. Seems like an odd and sweet color to be named Vagabondage, but there you are. Pretty shade, not that unique though.

Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liner

Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liner

Drag, Strip, Beth Mask, Beth Or Glory
The Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liners are new products, and there are four total in this collection. They feature an eye shadow on one end and a greasepaint liner on the other. The tapered end is meant to be the liner and the rounded end are the shadows. From the three I tested, the liners were fairly patchy and not super pigmented. The shadows fared better in terms of them being softer and more pigmented. They don’t exactly seem user-friendly though. The liners are angled strangely and you really can’t get a fine line with them. Plus they aren’t super soft so they don’t glide very well.
Drag, Strip is a light chalky blue liner and dark navy blue shimmery shadow. This was the worst one because the blue liner was SO chalky and uneven.
Beth Mask is a peach liner and a deep reddish/brown shadow. Again, the liner just wasn’t great here.
Beth Or Glory is a bright blue liner and a deep chocolate brown shadow. This liner was the least patchy and most pigmented one.

Pro Longwear Lipcreme

Pro Longwear Lipcreme Booyah!!, Dear Diary

Dear Diary, Booyah!!
I do like the Pro Longwear Lipcremes quite a bit. I do sometimes have to wear a layer of lip balm under them because they get dry on me after a couple hours, but usually the colors are great and I love the silky texture.
Dear Diary is a bright, clean blue-based pink. Gorgeous color, super fun. Love it.
Booyah!! is a bright warm orange. This is another great shade, perfect for summer.

Zoom Lash Mascara

Zoom Lash Mascara

Blue Charge, New Hue
I’m a big fan of colored mascara, and have been since 1985!
Zoom Lash Mascara can get a little clumpy at times since you tend to get a lot of excess on the wand. I usually wipe some off before using to minimize that.
Blue Charge is a bright blue. Not that different from most other bright blue mascaras out there. Fun!
New Hue is a blackened burgundy. Not sure I have one quite like this yet. I have yet to test it on my lashes, but do wonder how different from a black or brown it will look.
Overall: Out of everything I tried, I think the best quality products were the Pro Longwear Lipcremes and Zoom Lash Mascaras. The powder looks cool, but doesn’t seem useful. The nail lacquers are either streaky or un-original (though I wish I had the Near Beth Experience one to check out because that looks the most unique). I would skip the Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liners, I just don’t feel they are very good and not user-friendly either.
Availability: MAC.
Pricing: Pro Longwear Lipcreme ($17), Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liner ($22), Zoom Lash Mascara ($15), Nail Lacquer ($15).
So you have now seen MAC Beth Ditto. What are your favs and least favs here?

Love Booyah! I’m in need of a good orange lipstick. I’m a sucker for cute packaging but I don’t know what I’d do with Powder to the People.

I love Dear Diary and Booyah! You’ve got the two items I want the most out of this collection! I heard that other products just don’t perform too well in general, so I guess I’ll limit my wish list to the lipsticks.

It’s too bad that Life and Beth is so streaky, it’s such a cool color. It reminds me of cantaloupe (which I just planted in my garden!) And I know this is insane, but I actually don’t own any MAC products, but I’m tempted by these lip colors. I want to wear color on my lips so bad but I never like them once I spend the money and put them on!
I just think that multi-colored powder is so funny-it’s like one of those products I’d buy just to look at but would never actually put on my face! It’s whimsical and pretty though xoxo

Honestly, the more MAC collections I see, the less impressed I become. The concepts are cool, but the products just don’t seem to live up to the hype. I do like the blue mascara, have fond memories of wearing them in the 1980′s.

I’ve heard the powder is actually supposed to be used as eyeshadows. An interesting take on a palette I guess. I think the pink part can be used as blush, & the colors are for eyes. Thanks for the review!
That powder is very confusing. I thought I was the only person who didn’t know what it was, so thank you
The lippies look great though, I think I might have a home for that orange one. I wish the Life And Beth nail polish was better, it’s such a pretty colour. Honestly though, I don’t even buy MAC polishes because I feel like they’re always duds. Too bad, they’ve made some gorgeous ‘in the bottle’ colours. Sigh…
Oh, and Beth DItto’s the one who did that song on the new(ish) J’adore commercial. I have know clue about any other songs she’s made, but I know that one’s hers. My cousin says she’s big in England, where she lives.

I would say my favorite product out of these is both the Pro Longwear Lipcremes, and Vagabondage, but I’m pretty sure I have colors like all of those anyways. I think its funny how the powder is basically as weird as everyone that commented on the last collection post thought it was haha.

Great review I really want to at least pick up Near Beth Experience and Booyah I am in dire need of something bright.
Also I looked it up on there site and apparently “Powder To The People” is supposed to be a highlighter for your eyes by swirling the colors together.
Definitely an odd product.
The consensus for Powder to the People that I’ve seen is that it’s a poorly designed, utterly confusing product. My favorite said to pick it up if you’re a collector just so you can laugh at how bizarre it is in a few years.
It’s rather sad when the majority of the products in the collection don’t work right at all.
I know that I’m out of my love affair at MAC. I’ll still pick up items here and there, but I’m definitely not starry eyed anymore.
i think i’ve heard that the liner/shadow duos are opposite of how you describe. the slanted end is the shadow and the rounded, the liner. such a crap product i’ve been hearing. how on earth could you get precise enough with either end for a liner??! love the lippies on you!

This collection didn’t tempt me to go to the counter. Maybe I’m getting too old for some of these like the powder.

The powder looked so nice, I thought it was going to be something like Guerlain Meteorites, which have lots of colors but blend together really nice… Too bad, It’s so cute!
Thanks for the swatches!

After being initially excited about the collection, I’m rather let down. I’ve read terrible reviews about half the products, and while the lipsticks look nice, they’re not really motivating me to pick them up. The strange spotted powder is just kind of puzzling.

I would get Life & Beth if the formula wasn’t so crappy, as its a nice color. Owell.
I didn’t know who Beth Ditto was until she was recently on the Bravo show “What What Happens Live” with my imaginary boyfriend, Adam Lambert
She was OTT and hilarious. I looked her up afterwards and her Portland, OR based band, Gossip, has a new cd out. Some called them punk disco. Apparently she is known in the fashion world too. All the better to have a plus size representation in that world. Too bad the MAC line isn’t better, especially the liners.
Glad I gave this collection a miss & picked up the highlighting powder from the Hey Sailor collection instead. This is the most bizarre powder I’ve seen. The HS highlighter is great, can even double as a very light, natural looking blush for those with very fair skin. And Fleet Fast blush from HS is gorgeous. I use on a regular basis. But this? It looks like something I’d pick up for an 8 year old’s play makeup set, never something I’d ever wear * bleh*
Beth Ditto rocks. Once you have seen her onstage with Gossip you will NEVER forget her. She’s a big girl, loud and proud to be who she is, and she is proud to be gay. So good on MAC for again doing a collection that ‘aint vanilla! – plus the colours are just gorgeous.
