Orly Dark Shadows Collection Swatches & Review

As you probably already know by now, Orly partnered with Warner Bros. Pictures for the recently released Dark Shadows Tim Burton movie for a new limited edition nail collection.
This collection features four shades created to convey the dark humor of the film. I have been planning on seeing it because as you know, I am a gigantic Tim Burton fan, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. But I plan to soon!

Decades Of Dysfunction
Decades Of Dysfunction is a very pale pink. The “pink” aspect of this is very faint. It actually looks more like a pale vanilla/taupe kind of shade. Anyway it was a bit streaky and not completely even, even after three coats.

Grave Mistake
Grave Mistake is a blood red creme. This started off a bit streaky but after three thin coats is nice and even. Super shiny, but not that interesting.

Buried Alive
Buried Alive is a medium warm brown shimmer. NOW we’re talking! This has very heavy gold and red shimmer and looks almost like melted caramel. Gorgeous and fairly unique shade. Great formula, this was just two coats.

Mysterious Curse
Mysterious Curse is a shimmery blurple duochrome that changes from purple to red to blue. Gorgeous shade and excellent formula. But I feel like I have a few like this already. This was three thin coats.
Update 12:00 pm: After a few people asked and I checked my stash, it’s been confirmed that Decades of Dysfunction is the same color as Pure Porcelain. Mysterious Curse is the same color as Royal Velvet. So if you have those already, no need to get them again!
Availability: Sally Beauty and Ulta.
Pricing: $6.99.
Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think about it? Any of these colors tempt you?
-Kelly
Note: Orly is cruelty free.

I saw the collection and was underwhelmed. I’m also not a fan of the formula. It’s one that doesn’t seem to wear well on me. Maybe it’s something like Zoya and Chanel where it works better with non-quick dry top coat? I’ve no idea. :-/
I only have Mysterious curse but my seche vite pulled some major shrinkage on it.. glad to hear it wasn’t just me!

Those last two are great, but you’re right, the blue duochrome isn’t altogether unique. The collection works together in terms of a color palette, but overall I feel a little ‘eh’ about it. Definitely getting Buried Alive, though.

Very nice collection, I really like the first two colours even if they’re nothing unseen

I bought Buried Alive because it’s gorgeous, but aren’t Decades of Dysfunction and Mysterious Curse just renamed/repackaged Pure Porcelain and Royal Velvet? I haven’t swatched them side by side but they look identical in the bottle.
Wow, you’re right. o.O

Good question! I know I have Royal Velvet but not sure if I have Pure Porcelain, I can check!
Buried alive is my favorite from the collection. It’s too bad that Decades of Dysfunctional had such a poor application, because it is pretty and the name is really fun.

Not really loving these. It seems like a retread of similar shades out there. Will definitely pass.
I have not seen the movie, but I do want to. These polishes kinda suck for me.

I picked up Mysterious Curse and LOVE it!!!! I know that it isn’t a unique color; but it is to me, I own nothing like it! In fact, 3 ladies I work with went out and bought it after they saw me wearing it!! I do want to go back and get Buried Alive! It is a beautiful Fall color!!! Thanks for the post!!!
Alive is easily the best!

None of these really stand out for me, Burried Alive is probably the only one I don’t have a dupe of but it doesn’t seem particularly suited to Summer.

I want to see the movie, I do love dark humour and Tim Burton! I wish they had done something more new and radical though.. I bought mysterious curse on a whim because of my love for Tim Burton and blurple but it does seem to be the same as Royal Velvet
I love Buried Alive way more on the nail though now that I see it! I’ll have to go back and get that one.

I saw them last week when I went to pick up some new colors. I thought they were kind of cool but I was hoping for something a little more interesting. I do like the red, but I’m bias towards all things red since it’s my favorite color.
I do want to see the movie though.

Love the brown one! Almost looks like a darker version of China Glaze’s Harvest Moon, which I love. I saw the movie and ehh…….I was a bit disappointed.

I have Buried Alive and loooove it, I also got Mysterious Curse but then realized it has to be a dupe of Royal Velvet when I saw the bottles side by side….it doesn’t bother me though since I don’t have Royal Velvet.

I’m a big Tim Burton fan too, so it pains me to say that the movie wasn’t all that good. I actually got bored in the middle of it. Disappointed for sure

What is it with nail companies shelling out dark fall colors in spring/winter time? Not that I mind so much, my perfered season is fall, but it’s just a little baffling.
Anyways, I bought these polishes the second they hit the shelves. Originally I got Buried Alive, Mysterious Curse and Decades Of Dysfunction. I took Mysterious Curse back that same day because I felt it was just too blah swatched. Decades Of Dysfunction is a shade I would have NEVER thought to buy a year ago and I acutally really like it. I used it with butterLondon nail foundation and it helped with the streaks. I also waited for it to dry before I applied another layer, that seemed to help.
Well this one is a movie tie-in of a dark movie, so it makes sense.
Well yeah, LOL. This one I get. LOL I just realized how silly that read.
Haha that’s ok!
I’m disappointed in Orly for repackaging 2 of their colors. Did they really not think we would notice? Buried Alive is absolutely gorgeous though.

Not really motivated to see the movie, even as much as I love Burton and Depp together. Buried Alive is the only color that interests me, but not enough to seek it out.

I think Buried Alive is definitely the winner here! I’ll be keeping an eye out for it. The other ones, not so much!

Eh…I am disappointed in these. I *knew* Mysterious Curse was Royal Velvet (which I do like, but already have)…glad you confirmed it! ;P
Ahh! i have Mysterious Cure and it’s my absolute favorite! I love the duochrome-ness
Buried Alike looks so rich! Love how it has depth and sparkles like crazy.

i like it so much i can’t wait to buy them all because i see the movie already so funny and i love johnny depp.
Unfortunately for me (but luckily for my wallet, I must say.. LOL!) they won’t be available here in Italy.
I do really love Mysterious Curse, so I think I’ll have to check for something similar. Maybe I can find Royal Velvet ’round here.
