NYX The Crimson Amulet Collection Inspired by Dark Shadows Swatches, Photos & Review

If you know me at all and have been reading my blog for awhile you know I am a HUGE Tim Burton fan. Love, love, love, love him. Want to live inside his movies. When I heard a year or so ago that he was making Dark Shadows (a 70′s TV series) into a movie with Johnny Depp (of course) I must admit I was super excited.
When I finally started seeing previews recently at first I thought it looked REALLY overly campy and lame. But I have totally changed my tune because I love the entire cast (Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer) and the makeup and costumes look totally fabulous.
Then I heard NYX was coming out with The Crimson Amulet Collection, which is a giant makeup palette inspired by the movie. I knew I needed to see this sucker in person!

This palette features 24 eyeshadows both shimmery and matte, 4 blushes, 1 bronzer, an illuminator, an eyeshadow base, a liquid eyeliner and four lipglosses. The colors run the gamut from jewel-toned to subtle and natural.

The thick cardboard palette is about 4 x 7, so like a paperback book size. It keeps shut with a magnetic button clasp. You open it and first see on the left all the eyeshadows and some sponge applicators. On the right is a large mirror. The whole inside is decorated with the castle and woods.

Once you “turn the page”, on the left you see profiles of each of the main women in the movie, and what their style is. On the right is where you find the blushes, lip glosses, etc.

First 6 shadows in first set (over primer)
There are no shadow names so bear with me. As far as the quality I felt it was there for the most part but maybe lacking with some of the matte shades. Also there were a few too many pale pink shades for my liking.
1st is a deep brown/grey shade. Really deep and great pigmentation.
2nd is a pale glittery pink/white. Looks more pink in the pan than on my skin.
3rd is an eggplant purple with gold glittery bits. Pretty deep color, love this shade.
4th is a vivid and pigmented shimmery copper/orange metallic. Of all the shadows in here this gave me the most color.
5th is a pale lilac shimmer.
6th is a subtle taupe/grey pearly shade.

Last 6 shadows in first set (over primer)
7th is a very pale pearly pink. Hard to get this one to show up on me.
8th is a deep blackened blue shimmer. Great pigmentation here.
9th is a medium navy blue shimmer.
10th is a forest green shimmer. Love this shade, good payoff.
11th is a medium chocolate brown with gold shimmer. Again nice payoff, pretty shade.
12th is a deep purple/brown shimmer. Another one I really like.

First 6 shadows in second set (over primer)
1st is a pale vanilla matte.
2nd is a medium taupe matte. Nice shade!
3rd is a light brown matte.
4th is a shimmery bright white.
5th is a light champagne/taupe shade.
6th is a deep sable brown matte. Excellent payoff and evenness for a matte.

Last 6 shadows in second set (over primer)
7th is a very pale pink shimmer.
8th is a deep grey matte.
9th is another pink/mauve shimmer.
10th is a light taupe shimmer.
11th is a super pigmented shimmery bronze. Love this one.
12th is a pearly yellow/gold with nice payoff. Another one I really like.

Blushes from top to bottom
All four of these blushes felt soft and it was pretty easy to pick up the color. For the shimmery ones, the shimmer is pretty small so you don’t feel any grit with it.
1st is a medium pink with no shimmer.
2nd is a deep pinkish red with no shimmer. Crazy bright and great payoff.
3rd is a shimmery peachy pink.
4th is a shimmery flamingo pink.

Shadow Base, Liquid Eye Liner, Illuminator, Bronzer
The eyeshadow base is just that. An eyeshadow base. Nothing too exciting there.
The eye liner is a jet black shade, nice and smooth.
The illuminator is a pale yellow/white, great for fair skinned folks.
What they call the bronzer, I would use as a blush! It’s a gorgeous medium peach shimmer. Not sure how this is considered a bronzer though…

Lip glosses from left to right
The lip glosses were a little hit or miss. They feel very slightly sticky and are pretty subtle.
1st is a deep pinkish red. This is the only one with strong pigmentation.
2nd is a pale dusty pink.
3rd is what would seem to be a super bright pink, but was really hard to get the color to show up. More of a stain.
4th is a nude/brown shade.
Overall: Considering the amount of product you get for the price. I think this is a pretty good deal. I really liked at least half of the eyeshadows and all the blushes, illuminator, bronzer and liquid eye liner. The only thing I didn’t love would be the lip glosses.
Pricing: $25.00.
How are you feeling about this palette? Do you think you will see the movie?

I really like this palette, it has nice neutrals and some colors to amp up your look.

i really like that NYX has put a lot of thought into the packaging – love the forest background design, and also that they made a divider to separate the eyeshadows from the pinky stuff!
and lol, when you said ‘bronzer’ i was scrolling through the pictures and going “where? what bronzer??” ironically, i originally thought that the ‘bronzer’ would make a really pretty blush on my skintone :p
too bad NYX isn’t readily available in my country ):

I wouldn’t get the palette but I’m super excited for the movie! Haha
random thought: for a makeup collection inspired by a gothic movie, you’d have thought that there’d be more DARK eyeSHADOWS

I’ve been trying to resist that palette, but I really want it. I’m a sucker for vampires. It looks great, but the last thing I need is another palette, y’know?

Really cool palatte. So great that you’re posting so many more reviews and swatches! Thanks!!!
I saw this palette in a local drugstore that doesn’t carry NYX (London drugs for those in Canada) but I was in a rush and didn’t look back at it. Now I really want it for the 25$ to experiment with some colored eyeshadows and blushes!
This kind of thing is a good deal if you’re just getting started with makeup, but I find that I never use multi-palettes like this, so I’ve FINALLY learned to stop buying them. They just aren’t worth it to me, even when it’s a good price for a decent product!

Well I really shouldn’t get another pallette, and I wasn’t planning on getting this one cuz it’s kinda cheesy, but everything looks really nice and it’s cheap! I might go ahead and get it anyway. Plus the movie looks hilarious

It actually looks surprisingly nice for its price! I’d get it if NYX was available here. Which it isn’t. Sometimes it seems like nothing is

i was excited about this at first but now that I see all the shadows clearly, it doesn’t look like there’s anything too different from what I already own.
I went into Ulta yesterday to pick up some topcoat and ended up walking out with this palette. Now how did that happen? LOL. I resisted the Tarte True Blood Palette and am still kicking myself so when I saw this at only $24.99 I had to have it. I did a pretty daytime look today with the pinky/purple shades and the lighter lip. So far I’m loving it. The quality is quite decent for the price!

Seems like an interesting product, but I am not a fan of this type of packaging. I get worried that an eyeshadow will crack and get in the lipgloss.

This looks like a pretty decent palette, esp. given the price, but I don’t see anything here I really need. As for the movie, YES. I was like you at first, thinking it looked a little too hokey/campy (not that I don’t like me some campy goodness) but now I’m thinking it looks like a lot of fun.
I looked at that for about 10 minutes at Ulta last week when I had 20% off. I’m not really sure why I didn’t buy it.

It actually looks too dull for my liking. But like you, I LOVE Tim Burton to the max, and this palette is just too nice to miss. I don’t have NYX in my country, but I’ve ordered it from ebay! haha. Looking forward to it coming.

I don’t know what you’re talking about with the mattes — they’re coming across as fabulous in your swatches!
