Question of the Week

Haaallloooooo!
Happy Friday to you all, I hope your week was good and flew by. Any weekend plans?
Monday is a holiday for most folks here (President’s Day) but not me anymore. However, I took it off and I think I am going to be working some more on office stuff and setting up my new computer. Oh and swatching, of course. Maybe throw in a movie for good measure…
Has anyone ever insulted your makeup to your face before?
Yep! Long ago, back in 1988 I was 16 and it was the height of the blue eyeliner and mascara trend. I wore it. A lot. I hung out with an eclectic group of people then who were mostly into heavy metal with a few punk rockers thrown in. One punk rock girl who I had just met made some snide comment about my blue eye makeup. It’s just not the kind of thing punks tend to wear, haha. But then we became friends of sorts after we got to know one another.
Have a great day!

Other than my dad telling me I was wearing too much, not really. I do recall one friend telling me that pink lipstick looked better than orange lipstick on me, back in the 80s, but that isn’t an insult. I have never really been out there with makeup, so no major backlash!

My darling brother has said I look like a nightwalker before…
I mean “streetwalker” lol. Not that he was that nice about it mind you.
Mine is a bit of a sad story. I was bullied really badly in school and was super-shy because of it. I hardly ever wore make up even though I had been obsessed with make up since I was about 8 years old. One day, I was maybe 13 or 14 years old, I dared to wear a very sheer, very natural looking lipstick to school. A boy came up to me and said “Oh my, she is wearing lipstick. Let me tell you something, no lipstick in the world can help you, you’ll still be ugly.”.
After that I didn’t wear lipstick for years. Luckily I am totally over that now.
That is so incredibly sad! I know how that feels, I was also bullied and got countless remarks on how I looked among other things. I didn’t dare to wear makeup to school either as a result.

Yes I have had it happen sort of…it was back in the 80′s and I was (still am) into punk so you can imagine combat boots, fishnets, lots of black, mohawk or another non traditional style plus very bright colored makeup or the over exaggerated black lined cat eye with paled out white face and super red lips. I got a lot of “Who died?” “When is the funeral?” and “Halloween is over” i guess it didn’t bother me much since I still to some extent look the same 20 years later. lol
XD Not really. But seeing some older photos, I’ve made some pretty harsh comments about my makeup choices once upon a day.

Oh yes, I have done the “WTH was I thinking” thing myself.
I was a teen in the 80′s and lordy knows we loved our makeup back in the day.. funny I thought I looked cute!
Remember the 80′s striped blush? GAH! At least I didn’t have mall bangs! LOL!
I would love to be fearless with color like I was back then. I’m trying but I still reach for ‘safe’ looks more than fun looks.
Once I walked past a bar while wearing Urban Decay Peace & Fishnet eyeshadows. A drunk guy leaned out of the window and said, “Too much makeup, ma!” LMAO!

Not really, the only thing I can think of is my brother telling me bright lipstick just does not look good on me, which I don’t take seriously anyway.
I have never been insulted about my “face-up”. I have people very curious and amused when I do my “full spectrum” eyeshadow – one eye red-orange-yellow and the next: green-blue-purple.
Though one time I did have an old guy insult my nails. I had painted them with a magnetic polish and then done my ring fingers and thumbs with a glitter polish as accent nails – it was a nice look, but he saw them and got all “were you drunk when you painted your nails and couldn’t remember what color you were using?” Um, I don’t get drunk, thanks… and if you had any sense you’d see these match and I have a pattern going on… but, whatever. I basically ignored it.
Back when I use to have really bad acne I would PILE on the foundation and powder and my dad would make fun of me by calling me a clown and pancake face. I just shrugged it off, I knew he was right but I wanted to cover it up. And then my boyfriend, well this isn’t really insulting more helping me out because sometimes he’ll say “EW what’s that line on your face” (unblended foundation) or “what’s wrong with your eyes?” (mascara running). Haha also my little brother calls me a ghost on multiple ocasions because my foundation in really pale…but it matches my neck!!

Yep, I was also called out for wearing blue eyeshadow in the 80s. It was a little Hello Kitty eyeshadow creme stick thing that I got at the mall. My cousin was like “Ew, blue eyeshadow?! That is way uncool, girlfriend!”
However, blue mascara rocked! I don’t care what anyone says.
No, but I have had someone ask me if I was sick when I wasn’t wearing makeup.

not super bad but in grade 9 i always wore fondation… (not that my skin was bad at all) liner with mascara, one day i was running late for school so i didnt put any and one and my friends bf told me to go home and put some eyeliner on!
i thought that was a bit rude, but its the opposite of being tease for wearing makeup
I hate when people say I shouldn’t wear dark colours because of my skin tone and lack of pigment in my brows. Anytime I do anything with a winged black liner, I get comments about how it looks weird.
Also, the comments about me not filling in my brows. I have this weird phobia where if I have them filled in, everyone is only staring at my brows.. And I mean everyone. I have been playing around with a really light brow pencil from MAC, and I can handle that..
And also when I don’t wear any makeup.. People say I’m too pale, or I’m obviously sick and I have been asked a few times if I am terminally ill – by strangers. Awesome :\

I get where you’re coming from. Every doctor I’ve ever gone to has tested me for anemia based on my coloring alone. Good news is that you can in fact wear some very fun colors because of that. (Check out pixiwoo and nikkitutorials on youtube)
As far as your brows go, I prefer powder to pencil. I feel it looks more natural and you can use a lighter hand with it. Anastasia of Beverly Hills makes some very pale powder brow duos. Just a thought, one obscenely pal person to the next!
I will test out the powder route as well Sally, thanks for the tip! I do have a brow set from Anastasia.. It has been sitting around for a couple of years because I was too scared to use it.. I’m starting to be less scared (not really!)
Ugh, I get tested for that as well. And they did put me on iron supplements for a bit as I was ‘borderline anemic’ – how can one be at such a line? I digress. All is well now, but the paleness comments still follow. Glad I am not the only one (:

“Borderline” is doc-speak for “I’m not sure but I’m covering my butt anyway.” Anyway, hope the brow thing works out! Take care, my fair-skinned sista!
i tend to wear very heavy makeup and have had some people (okay, a lot of people) inform me i look like i have two black eyes. luckily, it amuses me (as opposed to getting all upset) when people dislike how i do things
i don’t know why people feel the need to criticize other people!

I have had so so many rude comments about my makeup. It might be because I grew up in a very conservative area, but even today living in Austin, people stare at my neon lip colors. I’ve been called names and had things insinuated about my sex life. And of course I’ve gotten the standard comments from sexists who think that we should only wear what men find attractive. I’m like, “Psh, I ain’t wearing purple lipstick for anyone but me.”
In the early ’80′s the ‘bi-level’ hair cut was in. I was one of the very first to get one in my podunk town. I was teased regularly that I had only half a haircut. Being a blue jeans and flannel shirt type of place, I was teased a lot for my fashion sense as it was what was in on the coats rather than in Timbuktu Kansas.

What was said wasn’t meant to be an insult. It was a complement from an old lady. This was right when the “natural look” came in. I was still wearing colored eye shadows. This older woman who was about in her 80′s came up to me & said she loved my makeup. Well this was at the hairdressers. She colored her hair black & wore bright blue eye shadow, bright red cheeks that were circles on her cheeks & bright pink lips. I thanked her politely & went home and got rid of all my colored shadows. Now it’s okay to wear them but I don’t wear them like I used to. I still love colors but it’s tough to wear them. I got used to wearing neutrals.
Not makeup, but perfume. I was working as a bank teller and a customer told me my perfume was offensive. I had received nothing but compliments on it prior to this lady’s angry comment. Go figure.

Not my make up but I had a couple get up and move who were sitting next to me at a house concert and rather than saying nothing, they told me my cologne was HORRIBLE and they had to move! I was wearing a toilet water that is really light by Philosophy called Baby Grace. Never met anyone who did not like it or had complaints on it unless they were terribly sensitive to all smells. My dad use to get my mom, me and my sis in the car and say ‘stinks in here.’ Growing up with that and then working in hospitals most of my life around patients I am very sensitive about not wearing anything or only really light scents. I also drove 1 hr to get to the house concert, so not like I had just sprayed it on and walked into the house! Like other commenter above have said, happened to them as well. Some folks just are rude about it when they don’t need to be.
i can’t believe i didnt totally get made fun of to my face(I’m sure it was done behind my back!) when i wore that checkerboard lipstick in 7th grade. i think only people i know(parents, boyfriend, friends) have ever said anything negative about my makeup that i can remember, nothing really mean.
