MAC Vera Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches, Photos & Review

MAC Vera is a new limited edition spring 2012 collection featuring bright fun colors and amazing pigmentation!
Inside Vera you will find twelve Crushed Metallic Pigments, seven Pearlglide Intense Eye Liners, two Pearlmatte Face Powders, two Nail Lacquers and five Plushglass glosses.
I loved nearly every single thing I tried out in this collection, though we have seen some of the colors before.

Crushed Metallic Pigment in Aloha, Butterfly Party

Crushed Metallic Pigment in Aloha, Butterfly Party

Lantern Light, Campfire, Shifting Sands, Aloha

Lantern Light, Campfire

Shifting Sands, Aloha

Lantern Light, Campfire, Shifting Sands, Aloha
Lantern Light is a light metallic bronze.
Campfire is a medium metallic copper. Uhmazing!
Shifting Sands is a pale metallic champagne.
Aloha is a metallic taupe/brown. Fabulous!
Super rich and pigmented. Just a little swipe from the lid is what I used to get this payoff. No primer, and dry. Gorgeous colors!

Rain Drop, Moss Garden, Butterfly Party, Desert Cloud

Rain Drop, Moss Garden

Butterfly Party, Desert Cloud

Rain Drop, Moss Garden, Butterfly Party, Desert Cloud
Rain Drop is a medium metallic green teal.
Moss Garden is a silvery green metallic.
Butterfly Party is a medium metallic purple.
Desert Cloud is a medium blurple metallic. My fav one (and my weekly macro shot).
Again, great payoff and great colors. I can’t decide if I like this one or Aloha better. Totally different, but just as nice.

Pearlmatte Face Powder

Sunday Afternoon, Flower Fantasy

Sunday Afternoon

Flower Fantasy

Sunday Afternoon, Flower Fantasy
Sunday Afternoon is a bright pink, fuchsia pink and pale pink that all combine into a soft yet medium bright pink shade with slight sheen.
Flower Fantasy is a coral, gold pearl and salmon pink that combine into a soft pinky/peach shade.
Love these! Both are very flattering shades for me personally, and both are colors I would wear a million times over. The pink is bright but not over the top or loud, and the peachy/pink is very soft and pretty for spring.
The pattern is etched in and doesn’t wear off right away either, which is good because the powder itself is really pretty.

Pearlglide Intense Eye Liner

Lord It Up, Industrial, Petrol Blue, Undercurrent

Lord It Up, Industrial, Petrol Blue, Undercurrent
Lord It Up is a chocolate brown with bronze pearl.
Industrial is a pale blue/grey with pearl.
Petrol Blue is an intense dark navy with light blue pearl.
Undercurrent is a deep mermaid-like teal with gold pearl.
I really love these and wear Lord It Up frequently. But I have to say Petrol Blue and Undercurrent are insane (in a good way!) You have to be careful with these liners because they’re extremely soft. In fact I broke two of the tips off while swatching with a little too much vigor! Great payoff, but not good on the waterline because of the glitter.

Plushglass

Butterfly Dream, On A Holiday, Pretty Plush

Pretty Plush, On A Holiday, Butterfly Dream
Pretty Plush is a soft white/pink shade with yellow pearl.
On A Holiday is a medium/bright pink with blue and pink pearl.
Butterfly Dream is a violet with blue pearl.
I have a love/hate relationship with Plushglass. I love them because they are super shiny and very non-sticky (unlike Lipglass). I don’t love them because I’m not a fan of that stinging/plumping effect they have when you first apply them, and they slide off my lips! Yes after a little while most of the Plushglass colors I have owned tend to slide down my face, for whatever reason. Anyone else have that happen with these?

Butterfly Dream

Nail Lacquer

Midsummer’s Dream
Midsummer’s Dream is a pale lilac pink creme. Sigh. Do I need say it? Streak-o-rama. I tried and tried to get this one even, but it was not going to happen. It’s sheer and streaky, even after three coats. No bueno.

Play Day
Play Day is a soft coral creme. Color-wise I love this one. It’s not your average coral, it’s softer, whiter and more feminine somehow. Formula-wise I wasn’t happy. It was thick and streaky, though nowhere near as streaky as Midsummer’s Eve. I could make it work with three coats though it doesn’t look perfect.
Overall:
I liked nearly everything in this collection. For me the must haves are the Crushed Metallic Pigments, the Pearlglide Eye Liners and Pearlmatte Face Powders. I liked the Plushglasses also, but the formula just doesn’t work with me. I still like Play Day Nail Lacquer despite the streaks because it’s kind of an unusual color.
Availability: Limited edition and at MAC now.
Pricing: $15-34.00.
What do you think about Vera? Is there anything you are going to be picking up?

I need those eye liners in my life. Stat.

Hi Michelle Miller,
Woot!
Love the Play Day lacquer and the pigments!
Hi Suzanne,
The pigments are so great I could just stare at them all day
I really don’t know if it’s MAC who has upper their game or me who has developed an insatiable appetite for makeup, but there is yet another list of things that I want! I love Butterfly Party because it has nice colors that can be (hopefully easily) incorporated with my neutrals, and Undercurrent because I don’t have a teal eyeliner yet and I adore the gold pearls in it. I like how the glosses look, but don’t know how my lips will react to all the stinging that I heard could be pretty horrible :p

Hi Sunny,
Yes Undercurrent is all kinds of awesome. The Plushglasses sting some (not a TON) but yeah, they slide right off me!
Butterfly Party you will be mine! Also ordering the two liners: Undercurrent and Lord It Up!
Hi Jenn F,
Undercurrent is my fav, so amazing.
Love the eyeliners!
What is it with MAC and nail polish fails? Seems like they put out duds far more often than hits.
Hi Laura,
Totally agree! So many streaky polishes lately.
Not to mention how much they charge. It’s ridiculous!
You make me LMAO with streak-o-rama!! what a nightmare! for that price, the formula should be perfect!
My favorites are the pearlmatte face powders!
Thanks for the swatches!

Hi Mara,
Haha it’s SO true!
Loving the crush pigments, but is it just me or does mac seem to release a new collection with the dawning of every new day? Its exhausting!

Hi Louise,
It’s not just you, they do release A LOT of collections.
Wow, Undercurrent looks incredible. Reminds me of the pencil version of the nail polish, Sally Hansen Project Runway in a way, and I love that colour!

Hi Kelly,
I have read a few other reviews about the Pearlmatte Face Powders that say they are very, very barely there when used on the face – although most of those were from people who had darker skintones – how does the pigmentation work out on fairer skins (when used as a blush for example?). Loving the pics BTW – can’t wait til this hits Europe

Hi Sarah,
I am actually wearing Sunday Afternoon today as a blush and it is on the lighter side, but somewhat build-able. I tweeted and Instagram-ed a photo earlier of me wearing Milani Flashy Lip Gloss and I’m also wearing the blush in the photo if you follow me on either one of those platforms.
Petrol Blue looks phenomenal! But my eyes don’t take kindly to glittery eyeliner so even then I’ll probably have to pass on these.

I have Flower Fantasy and I really like it – I’ve been using the upper part as a blush, and the shimmery part as a highlighter, it’s like a two in one!
I think I’m going to spring for the Petrol Blue Pearlglide – I could use a navy eyeliner and it’s so, so gorgeous.

Butterfly Party is stunning, and Petrol Blue is definitely going into my shopping cart!

The crushed pigments and eyeliners are gorgeous! I wish I could wear teal as I love that whole mermaid look, but it just doesn’t look right on me:-(

I’m really looking forward to getting the Butterfly Party crushed metal pigments, Flower Fantasy and Industrial (I already have Petrol Blue and Undercurrent from when they were previously released). The nail varnishes and the Plushglasses are a complete skip for me, even though they are very pretty colours.
LOVE the eyeliners! I’m going to get Undercurrent, Lord it Up, and Petrol Blue (maybe). All gorg! Thank you for the post (but my wallet is not thanking you!!). Since I started reading your blog I’ve spent WAY too much money!

Hi Ashley,
Haha, that’s my goal. Kidding
Yeay pigment review!!! I need them and the eyeliners. Didn’t I read you were a store? Can I buy them from you? I will take one of each please.
Kidding!!! But I really DO want one of each
Hi Kelly,
Just wanted to say that I had commented a few weeks ago about not being very impressed with your makeup swatches before. I’m not sure if you’ve changed things up but your swatches nowadays are amazing–much more clear and bright!! Keep up the fabulous work!
Hi Melanie,
I did play around with lighting a bit, thanks!
The pigments look lovely! It’s nice to see they have great colour payoff. I’m loving the pretty coppers and taupes.
The coral lacquer looks really great, too- it has a kind of milky quality to it that I find appealing. I wonder if it’s close to Butter London’s Trout Pout.
Thank you for sharing these swatches!

Aaah! I love that coral colour!
Butterfly Dream has such pretty blue pearl in it, but I’m afraid of the sting. it’s been a while since I used a plumping gloss. Maybe I’ll try in-store. But I am def getting industrial pearglide. I love anything grey-blue and it will go well with butterfly dream pigments, which I bought and l.o.v.e.
I got Butterfly Party this weekend, and love it!
Hi!

I’m not a MAC fan. But, I have to say I really like the face powders. And I even like all four of the eyeliners. Probably the only thing keeping me from running into the MAC store and getting these specific items is the haughtiness of the sales associates.

I picked up Butterfly Party and Strawberry Patch crushed metal pigments and I’m fighting the temptation to go back to the Mac store and get Aloha…. I just got a bunch of Meow eyeshadows….I’m addicted to pigments.

Mac’s collections just aren’t doing it for me. they are releasing too much with little quality. the liners look great and I confess I loved some of the pigments. but is it really worth it? people don’t even have enough time to let one collection sink in and then the other is being released. they probably should invest more time in making less but better collections instead of a lot of slightly interesting ones. the quality of the nailpolish speaks for itself!

Love the peralglides – I have Lord it UP/Black Line & Black Swan from the last collection – glad they made them permanent.
Just read this on MakeupAlley – Do you know if its true? I know you keep up on this subject and hope its not true
SAD NOTE: As of March 2012, all Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Estee Lauder, MAC, and Prescriptives items are “will not repurchase” for me, no matter how much I like them. This regrettable situation is the result of the Estee Lauder company’s decision to abandon its ban on animal tests, and contract for such tests in China. As an animal lover/respecter, I will no longer do business with this company’s brands, no matter how otherwise appealing their products are to me.
Hi Gail,
You never know if it’s really true unless the company straight out says it (which they never will) but I have decided not to support Estee Lauder anymore because I have read numerous things lately about this and PETA took them off the “does not test” list (but this doesn’t include the cruelty-free brands under their umbrella, which I still support).
Hi Kelly,
I just recently started reading your blog, and just wanted to say it’s really great! Thanks so much!
I had a quick question about something you mentioned in the eyeliner reviews. You mentioned since the liners are glittery they’re “not good” on the waterline. I was wondering if they are actually labeled as “not safe” for waterline use, or, more just that (per commonsense) a glitter in an eyeliner could cause eye irritation? I just ask because I’ve used these on my waterline a bunch and (so far, knock on wood…) been fine. I’ve never seen them labeled as “not safe”, but I definitely could have missed that! I’m also not usually super sensitive to stuff like that, so I might have just not noticed any ill effects. Either way, it’s definitely something for me to think about next time I want to go at my waterline with a pretty color so I totally appreciate you bringing it up!
Thanks!
Hi Nina,
To be honest I never looked at the packaging to see if it said that about these liners. I just know from experience wearing glitter in the eye isn’t a good idea.
Thanks VV! I just wanted to make sure I hadn’t been overlooking some big glaring warning sign this whole time! ; ) But again, I do appreciate you bringing it up, I’ve never even thought about it. I’m very aware of the issues with high glittered up eyeshadows, or glitter pigments being an eye no-no, but I just never thought about the glitter content in a pretty little glittery eyeliner. =) Definitely something to keep in mind.
Loving your great reviews! Thanks again!
