BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review

BB Couture Men on Film BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review

BB Couture Men on Film is the second new collection from them for spring. It’s the “manly” side of the collection.

This set features matte nail colors. Four of them are matte and two have a shimmery/matte finish. Actually they’re more satin-like than truly matte.

I did have some issues with the formula with most of these. The matte (non-shimmer) ones are VERY thick. They’re kind of hard to get even with no streaks. I felt I needed two coats for maximum coverage around edges especially, but it was so thick it made it even streakier. The shimmer/mattes ones were less thick and easier to work with. No streaking.

BB Couture Commando BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review
Commando

Commando is a forest green matte. Beautiful color and I like the deep green in this finish a lot. But you can see the streaks and it really stood out where my nails ridges are especially. Named after the Arnold Schwartzenegger movie of the same name.

BB Couture Lethal Weapon BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review
Lethal Weapon

Lethal Weapon is a burnt red shade. Interesting color for a matte, not sure I have seen anything quite like it. Named after one of the only action movies I like, Lethal Weapon with Mel Gibson (before he actually was psychotic).

BB Couture Ghost Rider BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review
Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider is an orange-y brown. Another not so common matte shade but streaky. Named after the horridly embarrassing movie starring Nicolas Cage.

BB Couture Road Warrior BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review
Road Warrior

Road Warrior is a nice jet black. I really love this one actually because it wasn’t as streaky and very satiny and soft looking. Named after another Mel movie.

BB Couture Top Gun BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review
Top Gun

Top Gun is a shimmery deep midnight blue. Now I have this “thing” about shimmery mattes. I cannot HELP but add a top coat. I need that shimmer to come out! This is obviously named after Tom Cruise’s movie.

BB Couture Top Gun 2 BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review
Top Gun with a top coat

MUCH better!

BB Couture Blade Runner BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review
Blade Runner

Blade Runner is a deep charcoal/black shimmer. Again, nice finish, no streaks but needs a top coat for me. This is the best named one so far! LOVE Blade Runner!

BB Couture Blade Runner 2 BB Couture Men on Film Collection for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review
Blade Runner with top coat

See, again I need that shimmer!

Overall:

I liked a few of them, namely Top Gun, Blade Runner and Road Warrior. I did prefer two of those with a top coat though, so that goes to show ya how much I like mattes! I wish the polish hadn’t been so thick because a nice smooth finish would look much better.

Availability: Overall Beauty now and BB Couture soon.

Pricing: $9.95.

What do you think about Men on Film? Over mattes or are these different enough to get you interested?

  • I’m not really a big fan of matte nails, but I do like Top Gun (though I probably still prefer Carrie) and Blade Runner with a top coat! Thanks for sharing Kelly :)

  • Not a huge fan of mattes or streaks :( I do find “Top Gun” to be pretty great though, especially with that top coat!

In the description for the color Lethal Weapon you spelt ‘lethal, ‘leathl.’ Spell check.

    • Hi Sarah Lynn,

Thanks for catching the typo! WordPress doesn’t always catch typos (but usually works for misspelled words).

  • I generally lean towards the men’s collections anyway but I have to wonder do men actually wear these?

I hate mattes. Always have to add a top coat. I do really like Top Gun with the top coat, but it’s not worth $10.

  • What a shame that the formula isn’t great. I’m really digging the look of commando, and I think bladerunner would look supremely hot on my husband (I just wish I could convince him to wear stuff like that!)

I like mattes in that they’re fast to apply/dry, but I almost always put a quick dry TC on. That combo (with Zoya mattes, anyway) gets me out the door in about 5 minutes, if I’m careful.

Love the matte/shimmers here, but not enough to buy.

Ironic that Top Gun is my fave; Tom Cruise is one of my least favorite actors. I’d love to see a Tony Montana polish–what color would that be, cocaine-off white? How about a multichrome named after Donnie Brasco? Maybe a whole set of colors based on mob characters from Goodfellas, Casino, etc. And Edward Scissorhands!

    February 1, 2012
    • ReaderRita

Hilarious! Gimme Donnie Brasco! Plus, I completely agree about Tom Cruise. (AND the Top Gun polish for that matter…)

…and maybe a Carl Showalter, Steve Buscemi’s character in “Fargo”, just ’cause I love that character. ALso, how about The Bride (Beatrix Kiddo) and O-ren Ishi I from “Kill Bill”? The Bride’s color would be a yellow with some red holo glitter. Sorry, I’m on a role here. :)

If we’re going Tarantino, there would totally need to be a Reservoir Dogs line! Just think about it!? Mr Pink, Mr Blonde, Mr Brown, Mr White, Mr Orange! Oh it’d be so great.

      February 1, 2012
      • WildHeart

Points for you, you totally got me! I never even thought of that one! Yep, that would be good; some kind of multichromatic versions that gave you a whole bunch of different pinks, browns, etc.

        February 1, 2012
        • ~L.K.

It’d definitely be a lot of fun. It’d be a lot of fun to determine what kind of Pink that just screams “Steve Buscemi,” for instance. Oh! And you know? You could even have a “True Blue” one. I’m sure there could be some sort of a glittery one for the diamonds too. (Maybe a silvery/white hex with tiny reds in it?) Alright, I’m getting way too much into this idea.

ITA; sometimes there’s not enough xanax in the world for me to sleep, and that’s what I think about while I try to nod off: Novel polish colors or names for colors. :)
The Kill Bill characters just popped up because that’s one of my very faves. For Fargo, we could have a nice holo-glitter (I’m thinking Oz Elytra style) with different reds, rusts and browns w/ black and charcoal glitter and call it “Accomplice in the Woodchipper”; maybe a “dirty” elytra-style in a yellow-white background called “Decided Not to Take a Trip After All” (my fave scene in the movie.)
I’ts been so long since I’ve seen “R. Dogs”–that was my first Tarantino, and still of my faves from him.

          February 2, 2012
        • ~L.K.

It’s weird, I haven’t seen Fargo. My movie watching is very eclectic. I’ll have to watch it some time, since I keep seeing it pop up at random times. Those sound like some really neat colours! I love the Accomplice in a Woodchipper!

I first saw R Dogs’ first scene, er, first, but the first Tarantino movie I watched all the way through was Pulp Fiction.

I also suffer from that dilemma. All I ever do is come up with little novel ideas. I sketch sort of fashion “dioramas” in my notebooks all the time (they’re usually comprised of a dress, red carpet style, with jewelry, make-up, heels to match, then there’s always some food component: a dessert, usually, along with an interior decorating theme). Overall, WAY too much of an overactive imagine and the desire to create things, haha. I just have no skills to create these things. (Although I guess I have been doing research into the matter. I just need to dig up a sewing machine, haha.)

PLEASE see Fargo; that’s my fave Buscemi role, and I think you would like it, based upon your like of Tarantino. Haven’t rewatched PF in many many years, but I liked it. I think we’d need a color referring to the fact that Travolta (can’t remem. character’s name) is ALWAYS in the bathroom when ANY kind of action’s going down; also a “Royale wit Cheese”.

Actually it sounds like you have quite a bit of talent in you! A big imagination is ALWAYS a good thing my friend. Don’t stop, keep it going! I used to be (I fancied I was, anyway) able to picture anyone with the perfect sexy makeover (not tawdry) they didn’t know that they needed, immediately after meeting them; my skills have atrophied. Don’t let your creativity languish!

      • ~L.K.

I put Fargo on my top spot for Netflix DVDs!

Oh, it’s so true with Travolta’s character. I didn’t even realize that. That’s hilarious and so very true. Royale wit Cheese is a definite. I’d imagine there should be a Mr Wolf one, too. It’d have to be classy. I keep imagining a silver with some shimmers or maybe a holographic. I think Pulp Fiction may be a harder one to do. It really requires a bit of knowledge of the movie and it’s been a while since I’ve seen it. Would there be a black one called The Gimp? It’s really interesting how a lot of Tarantino’s movies are great for nail polish collection. I’d guess it’d be because there are so many iconic scenes or characters.

It’s been even longer since I’ve watched Kill Bill, which is the reason why I haven’t thought about what would be in the collection. There definitely has to be a black and yellow one, of course. I wonder, would there be one for each assassin? Black Mamba, etc?

This is all making me look like a super big Tarantino fan! I mean, I certainly enjoy some of his movies, but I’m not super hardcore either, lol.

And thanks! I hope you get your creativity working again, too! It definitely shows that you still have a lot of it left!

        February 2, 2012
        • WildHeart

:) Thank you! You beat me again–a different, unique color for each of the Assassins would be great! Also, something for the Crazy 88′s upper echilon (sp.?), GoGo, Sophie Fatale, etc. I think that would have to be my fave Tarantino movie– well, tied with R. Dogs, and NOT KB Vol 2.

Oh, that would be nice! Also, did you hear he’s thinking of making a Kill Bill Vol. 3? (He’s working on something called Django Unchained at the moment, which is a sort of Western.)

          • Love this convo and butting in. When Kill Bill 1 & 2 came out (which by the way are my favorite movies of all time and he’s my fav director) I heard Kill Bill 3 would come out 9-10 years later and I believe Uma agreed to be in it then. SO exciting!

            February 2, 2012
            • ~L.K.

It is! I’m actually pretty curious what it’s going to be about and I hope it’ll be good.

I sort of have this thing where I don’t like Tarantino’s comedies, so Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, etc,but I love his more serious stuff, like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. I sort of appreciate them, though. I mean, each film he does is an exploitation tribute and that’s really awesome, but they’re sort of those “not for me” movies. I have a lot of friends who love his comedies and not his serious ones. It’s fun to talk about.

              February 2, 2012

I like all the colors but the orange-y brown. I really like mattes but I find they are a pain to apply and mantain, they never last on me =/

  • I want to like mattes – and I love them in photographs – but they just look wrong on my nails. I don’t know why that is. I had a matte topcoat for a while, but I ended up giving it away, because I would never like how my nails looked matte.

That said, I want to give black matte nails another try, and this one looks really nice. And I love the matte + top coats you posted – so shimmery and pretty!

Huh. Well that’s disappointing. Nice enough colors I suppose but really, nothing to write home about. At least Ghost Rider and Lethal Weapon are unique as far as mattes go. Having seen this half now I have to say this whole collection is kind of depressing. I’m think I expect better from BB Couture.

I’ll have to think about these. I do love mattes, but the streaking bothers me a little. I just cannot handle it when a polish doesn’t look perfect. (I am a very grand perfectionist.)

I love mattes! I will be adding 4 of these to my buy list. I don’t need Road Warrior & Blade Runner. Although I did love those films. It’s such a pity that an actor’s real crazy personality overshadows his work. I loved all of Mel Gibson’s movies. When I watch them I have to ignore the real life stories that I remember. One of my favorite Mel Gibson movies is Tim. It’s one of his earliest movies. He’s so damn sexy in this.

I want to like RW because hellyeah, he was a stone cold fox in those old ones…is that weird? Never, ever liked Nic (copola) Cage, so i’m ok there…and of course Harrison Ford was smokin’ back then, but I actually like the BR polish anyway!

LOL Ghost rider was an embarrassing movie hahaha But I’m partial because I dislike Nicholas Cage. Top Gun with a top coat is super pretty! I dig the idea of naming polishes after movies.. good marketing because if I like the movie I’ll probably buy the polish!
