Revlon Colorstay Longwear Nail Enamel for Spring 2012 Swatches & Review

Revlon has a new line of nail enamel out called Colorstay Longwear Nail Enamel and get this, they’re in different shaped bottles. Hooray!

There are a whole bunch of these, not sure how many. I am guessing between 20-30 new colors and I nabbed four that looked promising at my local Walgreens when they were buy one get one half off. They retail for $8.49 and are actually smaller bottles than the regular ones (0.4 oz compared to 0.5 oz) so getting them on sale is a good thing.

Supposedly if you use the corresponding base and top coats with this polish you get a gel-like finish and lasting power. I didn’t get the base and top coats though so cannot confirm that,

Calla Lily, Bonsai, Spanish Moss, Rain Forest

Revlon Colorstay Longwear Nail Enamel Calla Lily
Calla Lily

Calla Lily is a very pale nearly sheer milky white base with gold shimmer. I knew this one was going to be incredibly sheer, don’t know WHY I got it, but it looked so darn pretty. It does make a nice layering polish though. This was two coats.

Revlon Colorstay Longwear Nail Enamel Spanish Moss
Spanish Moss

Spanish Moss is a really nice murky khaki green with just a slight hint of shimmer. It reminds me a lot of Sonia Kashuk Fatigued actually. It might be slightly warmer and the shimmer has no blue like that one. Very pretty color and just two coats.

Calla Lily over Spanish Moss

Revlon Colorstay Longwear Nail Enamel Bonsai
Bonsai

Bonsai is a bright green with heavy yellow shimmer. It’s bright, it’s fun, it screams spring to me. I love it. Love the green base and the shimmer together. It was really great coverage also, nearly just one coat but I used two. It’s not a dupe for China Glaze Cha Cha Cha though.

Revlon Colorstay Longwear Nail Enamel Rain Forest
Rain Forest

Rain Forest is a deep murky green with lighter green shimmer. It’s really dark but has a nice glow about it. Great coverage again with just two coats.

Availability: Walgreens, CVS.

Pricing: $7.99-8.49 for 0.4 oz.

What do you think about these colors? Have you tried this new line yet?

Bonsai, at least in these pictures, looks alot like Finger Paints “I’m guggen Lime”….not an exact dupe – but very close.

And also quite like Butter London’s Dosh, which I just happen to be wearing. (Looks at screen, looks at hand, looks at screen, looks at hand again.)

Nice colors, but …. $8.50 for a Revlon? Which are notoriously inconsistent in their formula quality? Ehhhh. That’s more than they charge for Essie [which're a full .5oz, not .4] at my local Rite Aid!

I thought the exact same thing! For a company that only has a so-so formula with somewhat inconsistent results to be charging OPI/Essie prices – huh, what?! The first thing that popped into my head was “who do they think they are?” That said, I decided to be fair and give them a chance…bought 2 colors, but if they under-perform, next time I won’t be so eager to open my wallet.

I had higher hopes for Rainforest. It only looks okay on the nail. It looks more amazing in the bottle.

I loved Spanish Moss! So into these colors lately…
Great changes in the layout! It’s a beautiful blog and such nice work you put in it! Love all the beauty reviews and swatches. When I first contacted you about cruelty free brands, it wasn’t just for nail polish brands after all. Included changes in all kind of products in my life. So thank you for that. =D

Bonsai looks a lot like Zoya Midori. Great color, though! I’ll have to keep an eye out for the rest.

Wow! I am in love with these colors. I have been looking for a fabulous green nail polish color. I am still waiting for my ZOYA order to come in but in the meantime… These are fabulous!!!

Rain Forest looks like something I’d buy. Might be tempted if I ever see it around (I don’t have much of a chance to go to Walgreens, sadly).

Rainforest is quite close to ChG Glittering Garland- one has a bluer-toned base, the other yellower (can’t remember which has which).

Well, I guess I know why I’m attracted to it then. I loved Glittering Garland.

Exactly what I was thinking – I saw the swatch of Rain Forest and my brain went “Hmmm looks familiar…Glittering Garland DING DING DING!”

I’m on the fence about these. I really want the topcoat and basecoat to see how they play with other colors, but I haven’t found them yet.

    LOVE the new site design!

    Chynna

I’m pretty happy about these. My nails are in bad shape and, for the last few months, I can’t get anything to last for more than two days without chipping and peeling. I used the Revlon Colorstay base and top coats with a regular OPI color and got my first chip in 4 and a half days. Now I’m wearing a ColorStay color with the base and top coat to see if that lasts even longer. So far I’m really pleased.

      Elizabelle

Chynna, how was the dry time for you? I used the base and top coat with Delicious. Let my nails dry for an hour, then went to bed. Woke up w sheet marks. Got to work, put on some OPI Top Coat that I had at my desk, next morning, woke up with sheet marks again! Tell me your secret! I really want this stuff to work…

  • January 25, 2012

Calla Lily looks amazing! And Rain Forest, but all of the other colors I feel like I can pass on.

  • January 25, 2012

Oh wow, I honestly adore Rain Forest and Bonsai! I’m a self-proclaimed green polish fiend though I don’t own an awful lot yet!

First off, spiffy new layout, Kelly! HUGE upgrade; love! :D

I’ve actually grabbed a couple shades of this line from a very much picked through display but haven’t had the chance to test them out yet. I wanted to wear them for 14 days straight to see how they live up to the long-wearing claim. Grabbed the base coat too. :) I skipped over Bonsai but now I feel I need to grab me a bottle thanks to your swatches!

I’m so glad you swatched these! I had already bought Rain Forrest several week’s ago at our local Drug Mart for $6.99, but I haven’t tried it yet. Guess now I’ll have to go back & get Spanish Moss & Bonsai…LOL. And even though I’ll always be a polish addict, I love that you review & swatch other cosmetic’s & such as well. Hope to see you do more drug store types as I can’t see giving over $10.00′s for an eyeshadow or lipstick, but I will if it’s one that I absolutely love:)

I prefer the distinctive look of the old bottles. These look boring in comparison, but have a definite advantage when it comes to storage, having a narower base.

I’m not into green nails, although Bonsai is very pretty as a colour in itself, but I think I’ll try to grab Calla Lily when these arrive here – I love subtle sparkle

I may just pick up a color and try the whole system, since I am such a fan of gel manicures, just not the expense! LOL ! Great post and great colors!

    Yelena

nice swatches but how does it compare to gel nails? does it atleast last a decent amount of time?

    • January 25, 2012

      Hi Yelena,

I’ve never used gel nails and didn’t use their base/top coat that goes with, so cannot comment on the claim that it lasts as long, sorry!

    • January 28, 2012

well I doubt it has a comparable durability since the gel polish is chemically bonded to the nail and can handle repeated exposure to acetone.

      I’m just saying…

  • January 25, 2012

I do like the new bottle shape and the color selection is nice. I tried Rain Forest and a nice orange called Marmalade, they were great colors, but I think the price is kind of a turn off. Also, did anyone else have trouble with the brush?

I got blue slate and Spanish moss today. I would have snagged rainforest, but I was worried that it would be too similar to CG glittering garland.

    Kristi

These work but they cure with natural light. I wouldn’t even bother without first having the base and top coat. I have them and they dried fairly quickly provided it was daylight. I guess if you have a UV lamp that would work too.

  • January 26, 2012

And how was the wearing time without all the system? i´m really curious about the complete system as well, because it doesn´t matter which brand of polish I use, it never lasts too much… thanks for the swatches!!

I have had fabulous luck when using their topcoat. Couldn’t find the basecoat here. I chip and crack the fist dqay with regular polish, but have very good luck with this. It’s been a week, and I had one teensy chip, which I touched up and then put on the top coat to diguise my repaire. I also find it dries in a flash, whereas regular nail enamels take forever on me. If you have problems with drying time, skip the base coat. Just a suggestion since the original formulation, long since discontinued (I had been hoarding) didn’t have one and since I didn’t know this one even offered it, I applied without it and it’s just fine.

I’ve had the colorstay base & topcoats on and Spanish Moss on for 7 days now and I’m super impressed with the wear. My nails are flexible so they bend and end up with chips but not so with this polish, it seems to have made my nails stronger. There is tipwear. Their topcoat seemed to quickly harden up all the layers so I totally recommend that. On the display it had a note that the 11 days of wear required the use of their base & topcoats too. Walmart has it for 4.97 and that’s the best price I could find. This is a very practical polish because of it being longlasting – for me at least.

I saw a huge display of these right around NYE when I had to run into the pharmacy while out of town for my long 8.5 week surgery and post op stay. Did not have time to look but did notice the different shaped bottle. Will see on me if they really last longer – I am the ultimate test as polish really does not like my fingernails – fine on the toes – but peals right off my fingernails in often less than a day.

I am loving these greens! I’ve seen these in stores but wanted to wait for some posts about them before I bought them; so thanks for this post. I really like the new bottle shape but not the fact that it is smaller. Cool colors though. Oh, and I’m liking the new look of the blog; it’s definitely fun to change things up once in a while. :)

  • January 26, 2012

    Hey Kelly,
Because of your lovely swatches, I HAD to go searching for these. I found them at my local CVS for $7.99 but Buy One Get one 50% Off! Yay!
Anyway, I got the top and Base coat plus Spanish Moss and Blue Slate. I’m so excited about these and i’m hoping they work like the gel polish. I am a stylist in a salon, and have been wanting to try the gel polish but it’s so darn expensive, this I can work with.
I was really impressed with the color selection on this line. I had many to choose from, and so many of them were gorgeous. It was hard to choose.
Thank you for the wonderful swatches!

I don’t think I have seen any of these colors where I have seen these at. Maybe I have not been looking hard enough. I picked up one called Fall Mood, which is the prettiest I could find. It is a bronze with gold flex , so pretty! I am going to have to look for these gems though. Especially Bonsai and Spanish Moss, they are very cute! thanks!

I just saw these at Walmart for five bucks, so I got the base coat and top coat and Spanish Moss and Rainforest. I put on Spanish Moss last night. Wow, I really like it. It’s a one-coater and easy to apply. While I don’t like the SH CSM brushes I do like this colorstay two-brush thing as it just works better, maybe because the bristles are slightly softer or better shaped? Anyway it seems like a good quality polish (something I don’t normally think of Revlon polishes). The bottle feels nice too. I’m surprised I really like it. I can’t wait to try the dark green sparkly Rainforest.
