Deborah Lippmann Superstar vs. China Glaze Ick-A-Bod-Y

DL Superstar vs CG Ick A Bod Y 4 Deborah Lippmann Superstar vs. China Glaze Ick A Bod Y

Today another reader request from awhile back: Deborah Lippmann Superstar vs China Glaze Ick-A-Bod-Y.

Sidenote: Can you believe that Halloween is practically right around the corner already? Never too early to start planning! icon smile Deborah Lippmann Superstar vs. China Glaze Ick A Bod Y

In the bottle these two colors don’t really look very similar other than the fact that they are both orange-y glitters floating in dark base colors. But once I had them on side by side, I was a little surprised that they looked more similar than suspected.

Superstar is a rose-gold glitter with a deep brown base. It does tend to look like orange glitter until you put it next to an actual orange glitter, then you definitely see more of a rose gold color. The base color is fairly dark and the glitter is jam-packed in there. It’s a thicker polish.  I feel like the glitter stays together better with this one also, meaning you don’t get sparse pieces of glitter near the cuticle, if that makes sense. You only need two coats to get complete nail coverage with this one.

Ick-A-Bod-Y is an orange glitter with a black base. The glitter is the same size as Superstar and basically they have the same amount of glitter in them. Both are HEAVILY glittery. The base isn’t as opaque as Superstar and I needed three coats to get more coverage. It feels like a “looser” glitter than Superstar. The glitter is very obviously orange also, it looks more Halloween-y than Superstar.

See what I meant on Ick-A-Bod-Y about the glitter being “looser” near my cuticle? You see individual glitter pieces that aren’t lumped in with the rest, whereas Superstar all kinda stays together.

Verdict:

These do have a lot of similarities but definite differences also. Most definitely not dupes for each other. Ick-A-Bod-Y looks like more of a Halloween color, but you could wear Superstar on Halloween and it would be perfect. Not to say you can’t wear them any other time though!

Winner:

This is a hard one for me because I love both of them. I think Superstar wins out just slightly because I love rose gold.

Which is your preference?

-Kelly

  • Both are beautiful! I prefer the rose gold to the orange but I agree, Ick-a-body looks more halloweeny!

  • These both look similar to the new Sally Hansen polish, Pumpkin Spice – maybe a rematch to include all three?

    • Hi OnceBitten,

I don’t review SH anymore (not cruelty-free) so don’t have that one, sorry!

Thank you for the comparison! I wanted the DL but since I already have the Ick-A-Bod-Y, I’ll pass…

  • Whew, that you so much for the comparison. Maybe if the DL polish was a little cheaper I could justify owning both, but since I have Ick-A-Body, I’m good! I was really considering buying Superstar, too. I actually like it better, but they’re close enough dupes that I’m satisfied.

  • I love rose gold so I’ll have to go with the Lippmann. Both would be great for halloween though.

  • Those are polishes I wouldn’t wear only for Helloween. I’d prefer the China Glaze one because of its bright orange tone.

  • they’re very alike! want to try to find ick-a-body… like it a lot as a winter colour!

  • I think the black base of Ick-a-body makes it more halloweeny than Superstar. Superstar is one that you could wear anytime and not feel you’re screaming Halloween or Autumn. To me, when I wear it, I think of it as a bronzey copper. It never occurred to me it could be rose gold glitter. I think the brown base fooled me. I’m now eager to use it again and take another look. Great post.

  • This is a really good comparison, Kelly! Thanks for doing this.

The winner for me is China Glaze because it’s more Hallowe’eny…and…hehe, I LOVE Hallowe’en. Also, it’s less expensive, and I already own it. :P

  • Not too crazy about either of them I´m afraid :S

  • I thought that Ick-A-Bod-Y had a green base? Either way, I love it! Maybe if Superstar wasn’t so expensive I’d get both.

I have Superstar and love it! I wouldn’t have thought to wear it as a Halloween polish, but now I sure will :)

They’re both so pretty. I like the color of the China Glaze better, but the Lippmann looks like it has denser glitter. Definitely feels like Halloween, I can’t wait.

  • I think for the undiscerning eye, I wouldn’t see a difference. Nice to see them compared though as posts like this can help in deciding whether to get both or not.

I never would have guessed by looking at them in the bottles that they would look so similar on the nail. I like Superstar a bit better but since I already own Ick-A-Body I think that’ll do. Only 2 months til I can but out the Halloween decorations! Woo hoo!

  • Interesting, I thought they wouldn’t be this similar but it seems I was wrong. I prefer the Lippmann, I think. =)

Can I suggest another ‘vs’ post..? ChG Brownstone/Zoya Cola?

They are so close…but I am not a fan of either of them. My b-day is Halloween and I seem to have a real aversion to orange and black together as color shades. They work one night for one Halloween party period in my mind – that is IF you can get me to even dress up. I am in the minority I know but I really don’t like the decos and costume anythings. I also really have now only a few key things I put out for the Xmas holiday when I used to decorate seasonally with some house accents and tons and tons of Xmas stuff. But I am into major stripped down now. I hate to have the stuff up the next day after. If I needed a polish like this for anything I would buy a mini cheep bottle. But that’s just me. I know Halloween is the 2nd biggest decoration holiday after Xmas.
