China Glaze Re-Fresh Mint vs. American Apparel Office – Reader Request!

China Glaze vs American Apparel

Welcome to another edition of “vs.” where today we are featuring some minty deliciousness.

China Glaze Re-Fresh Mint and American Apparel Office.

Sidebar: I am suddenly craving mint chocolate chip ice cream!

This was a reader request and I thought it was a good one because there are some definite similarities with these colors.

Re-Fresh Mint is a cool, light-toned mint green creme. American Apparel Ofice is a also a cool, light-toned mint green creme. But they are not dupes.

Re-Fresh Mint is definitely a shade or two lighter than Office. Office is not only darker but also has a dash of grey to it making it more of a muted toned mint color.

There are also differences with the formula. Re-Fresh Mint is much thicker and more uneven for me. It takes three coats to completely cover. Office is incredibly smooth and has great coverage at just two coats.

Final Verdict:

So as you can see, these are not dupes, but could be considered somewhat similar to the general “non-nail polish obsessed” eye. I think they are different enough to have both (plus like 12 million other mint colors) but people like oh say Mr. VV, might not be able to see much of a difference. :)

Winner:

If I had to pick between the two I would go with Office because the formula is better and I like the slightly dusty hue it has.

What do you guys think about these two? Different enough to have both?

I am still taking requests for these posts, so have at it!

Awesome! I have the AA color, and have been tempted by the CG, but never bought it. I’m satisfied with having the AA only… mainly because I’m getting really overboard on the blues-blue/greens-greens lately! haha

I agree- of the two, Office is definitely the one that grabs me. But American Apparel’s CEO is such a giant turd, I’m going to have to pass…
(too bad, too- ’cause their polishes are gorgeous; and I’ve wanted them forever… oh, well…)
But if he gets ousted, I’m all over this!

    • May 13, 2011

I pretty much said the same thing about the CEO in Kelly’s previous post on the neon polishes.

It was interesting to see how worked up a few people got about my preference to not shop at a particular store and that I don’t boycott every single company that is less than stellar. (That last one was pretty funny!) Still stand strongly behind my opinion, and it’s nice to see that I’m not alone.

No, you’re definitely not alone. I don’t patronize AA for the same reason.

I know, the more I read about him, the more horrified I am that I EVER supported them!
I mean it sounded like such a great concept- no sweatshop, made in America, etc.

But the allegations against him are just too egregious to be ignored- no woman should have to fear being raped as part of their job description…

A friend of mine just had on the AA Office and I commented to her how I loved that it was not as “loud” as most of the mint greens out there. I definitely need to go ahead and pick up a bottle.

This post makes me want to bust out some mint nail polish. I like both of these colors, but I think I prefer Office. I like the more muted, almost dusty color of it.

  • May 13, 2011

I like the color of Office better. I love the muted quality it has :)

I actually have the opposite issue with the application. My Re-fresh Mint applies better than my Office. I thinned Office out some, but I think it still needs more.

From your pictures I prefer Office – definitely a unique spin on all the mint coloured polishes. Would you be able to post a comparison of OPI Blue my Mind and OPI Dating a Royal?

Thank you VV for this comparison. I actually own Nicole by OPI My Lifesaver, but I like it less than I expected. It seems to dry darker and more fluorescent than the color I see in the bottle, or maybe it’s just the contrast with my skin tone… I think I’ll try both AA and CG, until I find the right mint green for me.
Next time I’d like to see a dark purple comparison, like Nars Purple Rain vs BB Couture Bandito, or CG Midnight Ride.

Im starting to feel very sorry for myself because we can’t get any American Apparel Polishes in Germany and after the crazy Neons you showed I’ve really fallen for them. This must be one of the prettiest mints I’ve ever seen. *Throwsalilpityparty*

I don’t have either of these, however, I’m voting for AA Office as my favorite….for the same reason, the less chalky white, and more dusty hued green…:) Great post!

I own CG Re-Fresh Mint and love it. I love wearing it with Cracked Concrete crackle polish.
Zoya Karina vs. CG Ruby Pumps?

I have Refresh-mint and it is one of my least favorite polishes of all time. Looked terrible on me (NC 30 skin). Applied & removed within 10 minutes. AA’s Office looks dustier. I think it would work.

Essie “Sag Harbor” Vs. China Glaze “Sea Spray”

I wonder how these look compared to OPI DR1968 because it seems like it might be the perfect marriage of these two. What do you think?

  • May 14, 2011
    Aimee

I actually own both of these – and just noticed when looking at my polish how similar they are! Of the two, my preference is Office, I think the slightly gray tone is what makes the color so wonderful. I find that sometimes Office can be a little streaky, but still worth it.

How about a comparison between OPI Ski Teal We Drop and Zoya Breezi :)

    • May 15, 2011

Ski Teal we drop and Breezi are not even remotely alike, OPI is much darker. Doesn’t take a comparison to see, a google picture search should be sufficient :P

I realized after I read your comment that I meant OPI Suzi Says Feng Shui – much closer :) I won both Ski Teal We Drop & Breezi, they’re totally two different shades.

I’ve seen loads of posts about green nail polishes lately and they are all making me want to spend my money. I think I prefer the AA one as it’s a little warmer.

I have to buy some AA polishes. These two are definitely different. Love Office!

  • May 15, 2011

    HI Kelly:

Glad to see you didn’t cut off your nail tips, (posted on Tweeter) because your nails look lovely with both polishes. However, I am with you and love American Apparel Office over the China Glaze. You said it right with loving the dusty shade of AA over the brighter hue of CG Re-fresh Mint, now I feels like a Certs, LOL

    Hi Kelly!

Could you please do a comparison of RGB Sea and Hard Candy Envy? Thanks!

    Christina

You should do a vs. of Deborah Lippmann Happy Birthday, NYX Carnival, Milani Gems, Wet ‘n Wild Party of Five Glitters, and Ulta Pinata Yada Yada. :)

    • May 17, 2011

      Hi Christina,

I would but I only have Happy Birthday and Gems! :)

  • May 20, 2011

I did this same comparison when trying to find a dupe for MACs Mischievous Mint… Office was a straight up DUPE for it, you could not tell the difference, and Office was half the price, but most people mentioned China’s Refresh Mint, I tried it and found the same thing you did, its in the family but much lighter.
