Zoya ModMattes Collection for Summer 2011 Swatches, Photos & Review

Zoya Mod Matte Zoya ModMattes Collection for Summer 2011 Swatches, Photos & Review

Zoya is releasing three new limited edition matte colors for summer 2011 called ModMattes.

As with normal matte nail polishes, they are meant to be worn over your nail with no base coat or top coat to keep the matte finish as true as possible.

  • Phoebe - sky blue matte shimmer
  • Mitzi - limey green matte
  • Lolly - barbie pink matte

Mitzi

Zoya Mitzi Zoya ModMattes Collection for Summer 2011 Swatches, Photos & Review
Mitzi

Mitzi is a bright lime green matte. Reminds me a bit of a highlighter pen! I love the color, but had some serious issue with streaking. I think it’s probably because it’s got a ton of yellow in it and almost all yellows are prone to streakiness.

It did even out after three coats. I did a wear test of one finger this past weekend and must say it failed pretty miserably. I didn’t use a base coat or top coat and within 12 hours I had a lot of chips. I’m not all that surprised because if a regular polish lasts on me for a day or two with no chips it’s rare and mattes are even “chippier”.

Lolly

Zoya Lolly Zoya ModMattes Collection for Summer 2011 Swatches, Photos & Review
Lolly

Lolly is a medium barbie pink matte. This is a bright and cheery color. It’s bright but not a neon, and very appropriate for summer.

The formula on this was much better than Mitzi. It covered almost perfectly in just one coat, but I used two here.

Phoebe

Phoebe

Phoebe is a sky blue matte with very subtle shimmer. I like this one the best because of the shimmer, I think it makes it more interesting.

The formula with this was also really good and almost opaque in one coat, though I used two.

Overall:

I am on the fence because personally I am not in a matte mood right now, I want shimmery colors for summer! But I do like that they are bright and not colors you normally see in mattes. I definitely like Phoebe the most of the three.

Availability: Today

Pricing: $8.00 each. But wait, there’s more!

The only one that interests me is Phoebe, but I’m not a huge fan of the matte finish. I have a few, but tend to topcoat them, hehehe. I bet Phoebe would look really pretty with topcoat, but I actually kinda like the shimmer mattes. :-)

Out of these, I like Pheobe the best, but I’m not really into mattes. I think I’ll pass on these.

  • Thanks for swatching these. I thought I needed Mitzi, but I’m more happy with Lolly & Phoebe

Can’t wait to see your Zoya Summertime swatches! I don’t trust any other swatches but yours for color accuracy!

More excited for Sunshine though, I am a sucker for glass fleck / shimmer, and some of the colors look AMAZING!

  • I like Phoebe, but to the others, I say nty. lol!
The Sunshine collection looks banging though.

  • I can tell that Mitzi was a pain to apply, but I love it anyway! The color is just fab. I would mostly wear it with a top coat anyway which would help mask the application issues.

  • I wonder why they decided to make these limited edition. I hope this doesn’t become a trend for Zoya because I dislike the frenzy that happens with seasonal collections and have admired that Zoya and other brands like Nubar avoid this by keeping all their colors available.

  • Thank you for swatching these – great colours for the summer! But how do you make matte polishes last, since you cannot use a top coat?

    • Hi Ramona,

There isn’t much you can do really unless you want to make them un-matte and use a top coat/base coat :/

      March 21, 2011
    • To make matte polishes last, first put on your basecoat and then your first application of the matte polish. Add a 2nd coat of basecoat over the matte polish, and finish it with a last layer of the matte polish. so, like this….

      1.) basecoat
      2.) matte polish
      3.) basecoat
      4.) matte polish

It’s called sandwiching and will help.

      March 21, 2011
  • Phoebe is OK. Does the world really need more mattes though? Hm. That’s what matte top coats are for.

Lolly is adorable. It reminds me of my daughter: her name is Lorelai but we call her Lolly and, like all the little girls, she loves Barbie pink. :)

    March 21, 2011
  • My favorite is Phoebe but Mitzi and Lolly are nice too. I wonder how much of it is inside, do you know? I think i will order few Phoebes and maybe one Mitzi and Lolly.

    • Hi Jane Cooper,

The bottles are regular sized, 0.5 oz.

Although mattes are kinda last year, I feel that these are a fresh breeze in comparison to all the rather boring pastels this spring! If one doesn’t like the matte finish, one could just use a shiny top coat, right? :D

  • Tiff tiff

I just took advantage of the offer and got Phoebe and Mitzi. This is my first time trying mattes from Zoya, so I hope I will like them. VV, do you think using a matte top coat might help these last longer than a day? It’s a bummer that these tend not to last! Such pretty colors.

    March 21, 2011
    • Hi Tiff tiff,

Hmm not sure what a matte top coat would do to a matte polish, but can’t hurt to try it!

      March 21, 2011
  • Ahh, I really like these! I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting all of them Maybe. Or at least Phoebe and Mitzi. Omnomnom.

I love Phoebe on you! I’m getting all three. What I usually do to stop chipping is I’ll put a matte top coat on top. I use Essie’s Matte about you. Just gives it a bit of protection. How is phoebe compared to Robyn if you put a regular topcoat over phoebe??

    March 21, 2011
  • Phoebe looks the most interesting to me, but it’s still a pass. I’m more curious about seeing them with a top coat.

I’d love to see how these look with a topcoat if you’re up for swatching them that way– Mattes don’t last for but a few hours on me, so I never purchase them unless I like em with a shiny topcoat too so I can get double the wear out of them (and some, like Veruschka or however it’s spelled, I like MORE with a topcoat than matte!).

  • minnieme

Phoebe will be mine for sure *evil grin*
But I’m also in love with the crazy highlighter yellow one! Zoya will ruin an addict like me. Summer mattes – great idea!

Phoebe’s the only one I would consider unique enough to buy, since I have so many blues already! When it comes to brights like these though, I prefer gloss to matte, anyway.

This collection is not for me too. I’ve yellow skin tone which is a no-no for cool tone and pastel nail polish. I was look forward for their summer collections to expand my Zoya collection. Disappointed.

I am not loving these. I liked the mattes for fall and winter with deeper colors. There is something about these bright colors that I don’t like.

    March 22, 2011
  • Tamika

LOVE! I got all of these with the promo. I don’t plan to wear them matte though. I have several matte polishes but have never actually worn them matte. I always use a top coat.

How close color wise would you say is mitzi to fiona/who the shrek are you?

    March 22, 2011
  • HI: I just ordered the Zoya Mod-mattes trio. The Zoya Summer BOGO code didn’t seem to work, so I ordered these three instead. The mattes looked so gorgoeus on your nails I had to get them. Will let you know how they are. ZOya also has colored polish spoons so you can see how the polish will look on your nails. A set of them comes with the order for free. Try before you buy is what the web site tells me. Thanks for lovely swatches.

    Hi, VV.
Do you think Zoya Mitzi looks anything like a matte version of Illamasqua Radium?
    Thanks!

    March 22, 2011
    • Hi Kristina,

No, Radium is more yellow, more of an acid green and of course massive shimmer.
