Color Club Alter Ego Keep It Undercover Collection for Spring 2011 Swatches & Review

Color Club‘s new Alter Ego collection features two separate 6-piece collections. One is a light, sweet side and the other called Keep It Undercover features some great dark shades.

Normally I find Color Club’s formula to be very buttery, smooth and fabulous. These were harder to work with. I found most of them to be very thick and almost sticky and stringy. A few left me bald spots even after three coats. Hmmmmmmmm, what’s the deal here?

The set comes with their Vivid top coat, which can be used to slightly brighten these colors. I did notice some of them dried a little flat so a top coat will definitely bring out the shine. I didn’t use it on any of these swatches however.

Anyway let’s check out the colors themselves, which are all quite nice.

Color Club Masquerading Color Club Alter Ego Keep It Undercover Collection for Spring 2011 Swatches & Review
Masquerading

Masquerading is a deep green teal with shimmer. I love this color, it’s very pretty and reminds me of the ocean. This was really saturated and I barely even needed a second coat. It was definitely on the thick side though and not super easy to apply.

Color Club Secret Agent Color Club Alter Ego Keep It Undercover Collection for Spring 2011 Swatches & Review
Secret Agent

Secret Agent is a medium blurple with blue and pink shimmer. Very nice color and even better in person. I did have some patchiness near my cuticle (cuticle drag) with this one. This was two coats.

Color Club Alter Ego Color Club Alter Ego Keep It Undercover Collection for Spring 2011 Swatches & Review
Alter Ego

Alter Ego is a medium eggplant purple with shimmer. In fact it almost looks like a foil polish doesn’t it? It’s a very unusual color and the shimmer is gold, which I love. It was definitely extremely sheer though so I needed three coats for coverage.

Color Club Total Mystery Color Club Alter Ego Keep It Undercover Collection for Spring 2011 Swatches & Review
Total Mystery

Total Mystery is a vivid blue with pale blue and pink shimmer. This is a cool color, though I did have problems with patchiness as you can see if you look at my ring finger near my cuticle. For some reason every time I applied another coat it wiped some off. Argh! This was three coats.

Color Club Ulterior Motive Color Club Alter Ego Keep It Undercover Collection for Spring 2011 Swatches & Review
Ulterior Motive

Ulterior Motive is a bright fuchsia pink with blue, purple and pink shimmer. Gorgeous! Star of the show for me folks, I love this one. I didn’t have any issues with this, though again it was pretty thick. This was two coats, but probably should have been three for better coverage.

Color Club Alias Color Club Alter Ego Keep It Undercover Collection for Spring 2011 Swatches & Review
Alias

Alias is a dark purple with subtle pink and blue shimmer. I found this one to be very watery and thin at first but it built up nicely after three coats. I would prefer more opacity though, it still felt like it needed another coat to me.

Overall:

Good collection, but not my favorite from Color Club. I think the formula was a little off with these. The colors to get for me are Ulterior Motive, Secret Agent and Masquerading.

Availability: Online now

Pricing: $3-6 depending on where you buy

What do you think of this collection?

  • I agree with you about the colours – they are really nice. I think Alter Ego is a dupe for SH Purple Gala, which has a better formula. I have heard from others that the formula is off with this collection, which is too bad, because Colour Club is one of my favourites.

I’m so glad you swatched these and took one for the team, so to speak. I’m going to pass on all of them. I have colors that are close enough in my stash already.

  • I love Secret Agent! I’ll have to go find that one. I recently stumbled upon a Nail Pro Supply shop near me that carries Color Club (along with China Glaze, OPI, Essie, and a brand I’d never heard of called Jade). I had never tried Color Club before, so I picked up a couple. They only charged $2 each! At that price, I’m definitely going to have to go back for more!

  • Alter Ego is stunning. Too bad it’s on the sheer side but it’s so pretty it might be worth it!

  • Alter Ego’s description reminds me of Hard Candy’s Mr. Wrong. Interesting! These are pretty colors but nothing that leaps out at me. Lovely pictures as always, though. :)

Is Masquerading a possible dupe for Chanel Black Pearl?

    March 14, 2011
    • Hi Alina,

No sorry! Black Pearl is basically black with a greenish cast to it. This is definitely green, no black at all.

  • To me, these look a lot like some of the Sally Hansen HD’s but better opacity – with the exception of Alter Ego, which looks like Hard Candy Mr. Wrong.

Nothing in this is really a must have for me. Thank you Kelly for as someone said “taking one for the team”. : )

These look so pretty. I always love glitters. Very tempting but not sure since the formula isn’t great. Also there isn’t anything really different that what I already have. Not that it ever stopped me from buying before!

I found both sets of this collection for $7.99 each at Ross, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten them all but I do love some of the colors!

  • KayDi-Kat

I saw this set at Ross, too. It was the last one, but since the top coat was broken, they didn’t sell it to me. I was bummed at first, but with a so-so formula, I’m probably better off. That’s too bad because I’ve heard such good things about CC but haven’t tried it yet.

I love Color Club’s foil/shimmer polishes. The finish on them is soooo pretty!

  • Cindi

Just FYI, you can actually get the full set with the milky base in a box set or whatever at ROSS stores for 7.99!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no place here in east Tennessee that sells Color Club and I had been ordering them offline until a friend’s wife told me about finding them there. So far I’ve been able to get Reveal Your Mystery and Keep it Undercover and about four other full collections. The price for the full set of six polishes and the base or for undercover you get a top coat is 7.99!!!!!! Super cheap even if you don’t like one or two of the colors!!!
