Orly Precious Collection for Spring 2011 Swatches, Photos & Review

Orly Precious for spring 2011 is a collection based on “lush fabrics, rare stones and extravagant finishes” from all across the globe. “Orly celebrates the refined glamor of porcelain, the vibrant sheen of silk, and the lush sparkle of priceless gems”.

I like the idea behind this collection, I think it’s a great concept and they pulled it off (sort of).

  • Pure Porcelain - Beige creme
  • Gilded Coral – Coral gold shimmer
  • Fancy Fuchsia – Pink creme
  • Ancient Jade – Green creme
  • Sapphire Silk – Deep blue teal
  • Royal Velvet – Purple blue shimmer

Pure Porcelain

Pure Porcelain is a nude/beige/white creme color. I wouldn’t have thought of porcelain when looking at this initially but since it’s named that, I can definitely see the correlation. What I liked about this one was that it was very even and thick, but not hard to work with. After two coats it was very opaque. It would make a good color for a conservative work place or especially those with darker skin tones.

Gilded Coral

Gilded Coral is a light coral with lots of gold shimmer. The formula was good with this, no streaks not too thick or thin. I used two coats. This color is pretty, but I didn’t like it for my skin tone. I think it would look more striking on darker skin. It looks too matchy-matchy for me I think.

Ancient Jade

Ancient Jade is a medium jade green creme. Oh yeah another jade creme, but it’s quite nice. It does lean more towards jade than mint, in case you were wondering (hence the name). It was thick and covered completely in two coats. It might not be all that unique in the land of jade/mint green cremes, but it’s still very pretty.

Fancy Fuchsia

Fancy Fuchsia is a bright fuchsia blue-based pink creme. This looks neon, no? It’s NOT neon. This is my camera registering it as brighter than it really is and me not correcting it. However it is still very bright and super cool looking, I think. This was two coats.

Sapphire Silk

Sapphire Silk is a deep blue teal creme. This has a subdued dusty look to it. I’m not a huge fan of this color for some reason, it looks a bit ordinary. Also for me this is the only one who’s name didn’t really match the color. I don’t think of silk when I see this at all. This was two coats.

Royal Velvet

Royal Velvet is a dark royal purple duochrome with red/blue flashes. Of course it’s stunning and shimmery and deep and dark. Love it. It was a thinner formula so I used three coats to cover completely.

Overall:

Good collection. I think the must haves are Ancient Jade and Royal Velvet. I also really like Fancy Fuchsia.

Availability: Sally Beauty, Ulta, etc.

Pricing: $7.50

Fancy Fuchsia looks almost like the nail version of MAC’s Pink 4 Friday. And Royal Velvet looks fantastic.

    • February 28, 2011

      HI Gina,

It’s a super bright yet lovely and velvety fuchsia for sure! Love Royal Velvet :)

Yummo! The only one I’m not dying for is the Coral but then oranges aren’t my thing anyway

      Hi Stacie,

Yeah I am not really a huge coral fan either.

The Royal Velvet was more blue for me, I tried and tried and tried to take a picture of the purple aspect, but my camera of course hates purple. It is GORGEOUS . I love it. It’s not a purple, not a blue, but not a blurple, either. I also got Sapphire Silk, and like you, I was perplexed by the name, I was kind of hoping for a satin finish. I am wearing it right now under Lightning Bolt and it looks pretty neat.

    • February 28, 2011

      Hi Jen,

Mine would really only show the purple/reddishness to the base then the blue flash. Satin finish would have been better so Sapphire Silk, I agree.

Royal Velvet is really pretty. I wonder how Sapphire Silk compares to CND’s Urban Oasis.

mmhhh, like your swatches, like Orly polishes a lot but this Collection is not really unique.

  • February 28, 2011

I’m underwhelmed to be honest. I surprisingly like Pure Porcelain, but other than that I don’t feel like I need to rush out and get any of these. :(

is royal velvet like any of the colors from the cosmic collection Orly did?

    • February 28, 2011

      Hi kay,

      No, not really…

How close is Royal Velvet to Galaxy Girl? That’s the first thing that popped in my mind when I saw this.

  • February 28, 2011

I just saw these in person today and I was pleasantly pleased. They are not the most original but I find the simplicity of the colors refreshing. They are well done basics. Royal Velvet is an obvious standout in my book.

Sapphire Silk looks an awful lot like Calypso Breeze (from the Tiki Time Collection). How do they compare?

(I did look at your swatch photo of Calypaso Breze, but figured I’d ask anyway in case there were different lighting elements at play between the two photos.)

    • February 28, 2011

      Hi Kelsey,

Calypso Breeze is a much brighter, lighter blue.

  • February 28, 2011

I only need to have Royal Velvet from this set….I think. The coral one is interesting.

I’m wearing Sapphire Silk today, and I really like it. Good application, wear is so-so, especially since other Orlys have worn so well on me.

I’m really digging Royal Velvet, but I’m wondering if that’s because it’s a dupe for SpaRitual Health, Wealth & Happiness which is already on my list of lemmings? And could Sapphire Silk be a dupe for Dreams Becoming Reality? Gilded Coral looks pretty unique though.

I feel like ORLY is expensive. I like the colors, but not enough to pay $7.50 for them when I could get almost two bottles of China Glaze.

Wow, Pure Porcelain looks so soft and fragile (if that makes sense.. ;-) ), it just jumped onto my wishlist. ^^ Thanks for these great swatches!

    UneLuneBleue

Eh, I might pick up Royal Velvet just because I don’t have anything *exactly* like it, and it’s my kind of color. Otherwise, I think I have close enough dupes of everything else. Well, maybe I’ll get the Jade color too, if I don’t have anything too close…

I’m “meh” on this collection. The coral is nice, but I know it would look atrocious on me!

  • February 28, 2011

Love the Orly colors of the Royal Velvet, Ancient Jade and you right that teal color is misnamed Sapphire Silk, and love the teal colors (must be because this would look great for Teal Toes… Still all the polishes look amazing on you; I like the pink however, I am not a pink person, LOL The porcelain is very pretty and so is the Coral.

My favorite one is definitely the Ancient Jade, the color calls out to me. Nice collection.

Royal Velvet looks really similar to one of the colors from the Cosmic collection, but not exactly. I would purchase it because I only bought Space Cadet from that collection (which is the best one). I think it looks a little similar to Galaxy Girl but not really upon closer inspection. Galaxy Girl is more red/brown while Royal Velvet is more blue/purple. Totally flattering on your skin, which makes me more inclined to buy it since I’m about the same as you! :)

  • February 28, 2011

For some reason I love Pure Porcelain. I can see several konad designs looking awesome over this!
    And Royal Velvet looks cool!

:) hilarious! I’m reading my email while unpacking my Sally bag, and the two Orly’s that I got were the same two you liked- Royal Velvet, and Ancient Jade!
(not to mention: Finger Paints- Chrysanthemum’s the Word, Carnation Creation, Dahlia My Number, Heavenly Hydrangeas, and China Glaze Tronica- Techno Teal and Hi Def…)
    Ahhh, nail polish therapy!!!

      ReaderRita

Erm, I think that should really be Orlys, not Orly’s. Sorry.

  • February 28, 2011

Royal Velvet does look similar to Galaxy Girl in your swatch, although definitely lighter. It also reminds me of umpteen other purples I have or have passed by such as Sally Hansen’s Purple Potion and Rimmel’s Violet Metal. I know it’s darker than those but that’s what it brings to mind. Sapphire Satin reminds me a little of China Glaze Shower Together also. Overall, it’s a nice collection but nothing is really standing out to me.

I really like Gilded Coral, Royal Velvet, and Ancient Jade. The only thing is that they all seem very familiar to me. I’m wondering how similar Gilded Coral is to Nars’ Orgasm, Royal Velvet is to Mac’s Formidable/Orly’s Galaxy Girl, and 3) Ancient Jade is to any number of minty green creams I have in my collection, ya know?

  • February 28, 2011
    Robyn

Nice swatches for otherwise boring colors but…Royal Velvet, you will be mine! I would describe Galaxy Girl as having more of a plummy base and teal-ish flash and the finish is probably much different than RV. RV looks to be more of a shimmer vs. GG’s “cosmic” sparkly finish.

Gilded Coral reminds me of NARS Orgasm. I need Fancy Fuschia like yesterday!

  • February 28, 2011

I’m a mint lover so Ancient Jade if my favorite! I may have to get this even though it does look pretty close in color to Maybelline Minty. Have you compared the two?

I’m in love with sapphire silk and royal velvet. I looked at ancient jade, then down at my nails .. still wet with essie T&C and then looked back up at my screen and *sigh*.

  • March 1, 2011

Royal velvet is the best for me. It looks so elegant. I think it’s a perfect match for my dress for evening parties.

Do you think Ancient Jade is a close dupe for MAC’s Peppermint Patti? I have Peppermint Patti but I HATE the formula and I’ve been on the lookout for an identical dupe for ages!

    • March 9, 2011

      Hi Michelle,

No but it’s way better than Peppermint Patti!
