China Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Swatches & Review – Part II

Mornin’ icon smile China Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Swatches & Review Part II

No time for dilly dallying today, so here is part II of China Glaze Anchors Away for spring 2011.

These had better color payoff than the first 6 I showed. Most were opaque in two coats, as opposed to part I which were mostly three. All the cremes were really shiny as well.

China Glaze Starboard China Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Swatches & Review Part II
Starboard

Starboard is a medium shamrock green creme. This wound up being nicer on me than I expected. It looks fabulous with my skin tone and it applied like butter. This was two coats.

China Glaze Lighthouse China Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Swatches & Review Part II
Lighthouse

Lighthouse is a warm yellow/gold with glitter. This is a “no can do” color on my skin tone, it just makes me look sickly and sallow. Otherwise it’s a pretty color. This was three coats.

China Glaze Ahoy China Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Swatches & Review Part II
Ahoy!

Ahoy! is a bright pink with fuchsia shimmer. This is the star of the whole collection. It’s bright, fun, opaque and looks great on me. This was two coats.

China Glaze First Mate China Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Swatches & Review Part II
First Mate

First Mate is a medium/dark navy blue creme. Nice and looks good on me, but been there, done that. This was two coats.

China Glaze Life Preserver China Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Swatches & Review Part II
Life Preserver

Life Preserver is a medium coral/orange creme. Thought it was going to be more muddy or brown from the bottle but turned out to be brighter. This was two coats.

China Glaze Hey Sailor China Glaze Anchors Away Spring 2011 Swatches & Review Part II
Hey Sailor

Hey Sailor is a bright poppy red creme. Gorgeous application and looks amazing and shiny, but it’s probably not all that unique compared to the 5 million red cremes I already own. This was two coats.

Overall:

This collection overall was just ok to me compared to most China Glaze collections which are “WOW” in my eyes. It seems like the colors were mostly just kinda of “there”, nothing super exciting going on and many have been seen before. Hopefully the next one will be amazing!

What do you think of this set?

  • I’m actually partial to ‘Hey Sailor’, mostly because the one simple shiny red creme I own is almost gone. Sometimes I’m just in the mood for a little bit of a ‘retro’ manicure. I like Starboard as well but I’ve OD’d on greens lately so I need to exercise a little restraint. :)

With the exception of “Lighthouse,” I like this set so much more than the first. The green looks wonderful on you! My favorites of this set: “Life Preserver” (it can be hard to find an orange that isn’t screaming “ORANGE” and I think this fits the bill), “FIrst Mate,” and “Ahoy!” Great swatches!

  • I think I would have to agree with you. ‘Hey Sailor’ looks interesting – as I love a nice reddish color. The the rest don’t really move me.

Ooh, I’ve been loving green polishes lately.

I just got this set in the mail yesterday, and it took me forever to decide which color to wear first. I had thought it would be the blue, but I ended up with “Hey Sailor” and I love the retro 50s feel of it.

  • I knew I wanted Starboard when I saw the promo pictures. But it wasn’t until I saw your swatches that I really noticed how beautiful Ahoy! is. Really surprised. Looks like I’ll have to get two now.

  • I’ve gotta have “First Mate” immediately! That and “Below Deck” from Part I are my favorites, and I don’t personally own anything like them. I’m also considering “Ahoy!” I think I only own one pink. Hmm.

I love that orange Life Preserver! I have Sea Spray and it looks almost exactly the same as Essie Sag Harbor and Eyeko Rain. Starboard looks very similar to OPI’s new green from the Texas collection, so I will wait for that one since I prefer OPI’s formula and brush. You almost sold me on Ahoy! but I’m going to pass since I never like wearing berry-type colors.

Well, I’d have to agree, it’s not their most amazing collection. It’s… pretty enough, but not much that’s spectacular. Of course, as I said before, I did end up ordering most of the collection. And now I’m sort of wishing I’d gotten the red, although I’m sure I have a dupe already, it looks so pretty on you!

  • Although it is a cute named collection, I don’t think there is anything really unique here. It will be interesting to see which one(s) become the breakout color.

I ended up buying them all from TD. When I reflect on why they appealed to me, I thought they made a coherent collection. Both halves remind me of beach locales – the colour of the sea, sky, and sand, with shots of colour on the beach houses, clothing, umbrellas, etc. In the end, I think it was the imagery that I felt brought the collection together for me.

If any of them are dupes or not for me, I usually give them away to friends or family, anyway, so I am sure someone will be happy. :)

  • Yah, it’s nice but usually I want more China Glaze colours from a collection but I find I only really want a few. Maybe CG is hoping their Tronica collection will fill that gap? But it’s so much like their other holos collection. I’m kicking myself for not getting any of the Khromes. I have a bunch of lovely, but streaky metallics from the Romantiques.

    January 19, 2011
  • Ahoy! is the only one I really kinda liked. I’m waiting for Tronica but based on swatches I’ve seen and what I read….it’s not as good as OMG or Kaleidoscope. :( What are your thoughts on Tronica so far?

  • This set says “China Glaze” to me much more than the ones in Part I. Lighthouse seems kind of out of place, otherwise I love these. Thanks for the lovely swatches :)

I like the set because I’m relatively new to nail polish addictions and China Glaze is a fantastic way to fill out a collection for relatively little cash if you buy them online, and that’s what I see this collection as the perfect opportunity to do!

Is Starboard similar to OPI Jade is the New Black?

    January 19, 2011
    • Hi Anastasia Thompson,

It’s sort of similar but also not. It’s more of a bright grass green as opposed to a dusky jade green. They have the same type of look (medium green creme), but the greens are different colors for sure.

I’ll definitely be buying Starboard. I love greens. I’ll probably just pick out a few polishes.

I absolutely love Starboard! And First Mate is exactly the navy I’ve been looking for for quite a while. This may be a question you can’t answer, but I figured I might as well try…
I’m currently studying abroad in London do you know where I can buy the China Glaze collection in the UK? I think the Starboard would be the perfect color to complement my St. Patty’s day celebrations in Dublin!
