The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco

On Wednesday I went to The Fairmont Hotel for the first time (!!) ever in San Francisco for high tea with a friend. We had done high tea at The Ritz in SF before, and wanted to try something new. This hotel was made famous in the 1980′s by Aaron Spelling because it was featured in his night-time soap opera, Hotel. I used to watch that (along with Dynasty and Knot’s Landing)

It was love at first sight because of all the ornate moldings. Give me ornate ANY day of the week and I am there! I think that’s why I am so obsessed with London and Europe in general because their architecture tends to be much more fancy and ornate than in much of America.

Light poles all decked out for the holidays.

Huge Christmas tree in the lobby.

Give me an ornate ceiling and I am DOUBLY there!

Singers perched atop the lobby check-in area.

High tea in the flesh. It wasn’t quite as good as the one at The Ritz, but it was good. The Ritz served more scones (we only had one kind here) and the sandwiches seemed a little better there also.
Next year it’s high tea at the Palace Hotel, which is my hands down favorite hotel in all of San Francisco (it was featured in the movie The Game with Michael Douglas. When he fell through the glass ceiling in the end, that was the Garden Court, which is where I shall be dining)
Happy holidays!

Beautiful hotel. I’ve stayed at a Fairmount in Montreux, Switzerland. just as ornate on the outside as this one. The inside was gorgeous too.

I haven’t been to SF in ages. I wish I could go there again! Thanks for the pictures.

I have never had tea, or done that before! Looks like a very pretty place!
Hi stephanie,
It’s more about the little finger sandwiches, scones and desserts than the tea. You can have tea on the side and it usually also comes with champagne.
The Garden Court also has the most awesome Sunday brunch in history…and it’s doubly awesome on holidays! (Can’t wait to get there tomorrow, in fact…)
