Orly Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Collection Swatches & Review

Orly Cosmic FX is a much anticipated collection for fall 2010. In fact I think it’s one of the most anticipated nail collections in a long time.

Cosmic FX is a limited edition collection featuring six new shimmery duochrome colors. According to Orly “the innovation infuses natural rock minerals, crystals, and glass to give nails a special optical effect with extreme luster, rich pearlescence, and a smooth, sparkling spectrum of concentrated color. The MineralFX technology includes a special mica that allows for a clearer, vibrantly bright lustrous shimmer. Crystals allow for a mullti-dimensional color transformation. Glass particles carefully controlled in shape and size create a luminous phenomenon. This combination infused with the Silica and specific colors selected create this exclusive technology that gives nails a unique optical effect that’s magnifies as the lighting source intensifies or viewing angle changes”.

I don’t normally quote directly from press releases, but in the case of these I find it pretty interesting what all went into creating these effects.

The colors include:

  • Lunar Eclipse: Blue with pink purple FX
  • Galaxy Girl: Blue with blue green FX
  • It’s Not Rocket Science: Green with gold blue FX
  • Space Cadet: Green with purple gold FX
  • Halleys Comet: Turquoise with green yellow FX
  • Out Of This World: Purple with pink silver FX

The formula on these was really good, as most Orly’s are. All but one of these did need three coats in my experience. I prefer my colors to be as saturated as possible, so three is pretty standard for me anyway.

Can I just say I love the black tops? I love Orly bottles in general I think they are very satisfying in my hand. Heavy and sturdy. Love the rubberized grip caps also. Don’t change that Orly!

It’s Not Rocket Science

It’s Not Rocket Science is a vivid green with a heavy yellow flash. You can see blue in the bottle, but it’s not as obvious on the nail to my eye. I love this baby, it’s the first one that caught my eye in the press release. This was three coats.

Orly Space Cadet Orly Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Collection Swatches & Review
Space Cadet

Space Cadet is a green with really heavy purple, gold, yellow and reddish flashes. I think this is the one with the most duochrome effect in it. It’s totally amazing, you barely move your hand and it changes to so many different colors. This was the first one I wore and I was staring at my hands all day. This was three coats.

Orly Halleys Comet Orly Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Collection Swatches & Review
Halleys Comet

Halleys Comet is a bright turquoise blue with green and yellow flashes. Of the six I think this had the least duochrome effect for me. You could see it in the bottle a lot more. This was three coats.

Orly Galaxy Girl Orly Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Collection Swatches & Review
Galaxy Girl

Galaxy Girl is a dark purple/brown with blue and green flashes. I could see just about every color under the sun in the bottle on this, but not as much on the nail. Still gorgeous. This was three coats.

Orly Lunar Eclipse Orly Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Collection Swatches & Review
Lunar Eclipse

Lunar Eclipse is a bright blue with pink and purple flashes. It looked very purple in the bottle, but again like with Halleys Comet I didn’t see as much translation on the nail as some of the others. Still there’s no mistake it’s a duochrome. This was three coats.

Orly Out Of This World Orly Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Collection Swatches & Review
Out Of This World

Out Of This World is a royal purple with pink and silver flashes. This is very pretty, but one of the lesser obvious duochromes. This was really opaque so I only needed two coats.

Overall:

I think this is a really great collection and I LOVE these kinds of colors and finishes. I do suspect there are some here that are very similar to others (Halleys Comet and Zoya Charla are similar for instance). But if you have nothing like this, then I think you will love them! These release in September.

I’m still not sold on the glitter resurgence. If you’re like me on this – looooove the color and duochrome of Space Cadet, but not so much the glitter – try Nubar Wildlife. Same effect, minus glitter!

    August 5, 2010
    • HI maria,

I love these ones. I think they are fabulous and not all that glittery. They look more glass flecked than straight up glitter. I have Nubar Wildlife, it’s nice for sure.

I have to say, I’m pretty sure these don’t live up to the hype. In the pics, Halley’s Comet looked like it was going to be breathtaking, and on the nail it looks like it has definite dupes out there. The only one I’ll buy is Space Cadet.

    August 5, 2010
    • Hi Nicole,

Yeah I guess it depends on your point of view and how many nail colors you own that are similar. If you don’t have any like these, then I think they are really amazing. If you have some similar ones, then skip ‘em! :)

      August 5, 2010
  • Rachael

I think I’ll pick up Space Cadet – it’s the standout for me. I just can’t get into the others. Thanks for the swatches!

Yeah they are on the border of being too expensive, especially if you want them all!

Do the polishes dry bumpy? They look like the do, but it could just be all that glitter throwing me off!

    August 5, 2010
    • Hi Laura,

Nope, they aren’t bumpy or gritty.

      August 5, 2010
  • Arlyn

They all are very pretty! But my “Must Have” is Space Cadet; I will end up buying Galaxy Girl and It’s not Rocket Science annnndddd possibly Lunar Eclipse. Which one is your very FAVE?!

    August 5, 2010
    • Hi Arlyn,

My fav is Space Cadet, I think it’s the most unique and has the most duochrome effect.

      August 5, 2010
  • amanda

are these $10 because of the special process that they have to go through for this specific collection, or are Orly’s normally that much. At Sally’s Beauty they are only $6…

    August 5, 2010
    • Hi amanda,

I don’t know why these are more expensive. Might be because of that and also they are limited edition, so sometimes LE collections are more.

      August 5, 2010
  • Andie

    My poor poor MasterCard. :(
At first I was “Meh, I don’t really need any of these…”, then the more swatches I saw, the more colors I wanted. Your review was it for me, now I want almost all of them. I think I’ll start with Space Cadet, Galaxy Girl and Lunar Eclipse though.

    August 5, 2010
    • Hi Andie,

      Good choices :)

    August 5, 2010
    • Hi Katie,

I have read from people on Twitter the Lippmann Gilt sale is a little disappointing – all pinks and nudes. But maybe some people like that!

      August 5, 2010
  • Although these are amazing (particulary in love with Galaxy Girl – seems to be the most unique color), I’m not as anxious for these as I was with some of the other fall collections (China Glaze and OPI). I’m a marketing sucker, though, so I’ll probably snatch up at least 1.

hey they’re not that hard to track down…?
I live in Sweden and I always have to buy stuff online, we only have boring shades here. I order from e-tailers or of Ebay.

      August 5, 2010
  • Ok Kelly, you just convinced me that I need them ALL!

    August 5, 2010

They have already gone on sale on e-tailers!
I ordered them from Transdesign, but they seem sold out there right now.
I’ve ordered the whole collection, before even seeing swatches..!
So I am a bid sad that there are some dupes, but hey, they still seem great!

  • Cindi

I love Orly, to me they can do no wrong from shimmery sheers to their bright neon pinks. I have never been dissatisfied with any purchase and they don’t get nearly enough credit…yeah they have a lot of mainstream but to me they seem to get out of the box more than OPI and don’t get enough credit….XOXO Orly!! (Just bought all the Plastix!!) Glitter, sparkle, shine = PURRRR!!!!

Oh MY. If the finish of these COSMIC FX polishes are anything like the finish of Orly’s three metallic foil polishes (?), I’ll HAVE to buy them all (well at LEAST “Space Cadet,” Halley’s Comet” and “Lunar Eclipse” anyway!)

I’m loving all the glitter, holos, sparkles – even just pretty colors in cremes & shimmers! (The greiges, muted mattes and taupey-purples were fine for a while now, & are nice sometimes, but so… listless… blah, or industrial, I guess, at least to my eyes, anyway.

Great pics of COSMIC FX on your nails, BTW!
