Sephora by OPI Havana Nights Collection Summer 2010 Swatches & Review

Good morning!

Today I’ve got the new Sephora by OPI colors for summer 2010. Well I have 4 out of 6 of them at least.

I have reviewed a lot of colors in this line by now and overall I really think the polish is pretty nice. I do wish they were less expensive and I am not fond of the bottle shape, but I can’t control everything I suppose.

The formula on these was pretty decent. I did have some clumping at the tip with one of them, but I think that was more my fault for applying too thick and fast rather than the polishes fault.

Read on!

Sephora by OPI Read My Palm Sephora by OPI Havana Nights Collection Summer 2010 Swatches & Review
Read My Palm

Read My Palm is yep, you got it, a mint green creme. What can I say, it’s pretty, flattering and opaque in two coats. It has a slightly dusty effect compared to some other mint greens I have. I love it. I think I am going to have to add this and yet another mint green I got yesterday to another mint green post soon!

Sephora by OPI Caribbean Cocktail Sephora by OPI Havana Nights Collection Summer 2010 Swatches & Review
Caribbean Cocktail

Caribbean Cocktail is a deep blue with gobs of silver micro-glitter. I dunno, I kinda liked it but also kinda felt it was blah and boring. I think I have too many similar that’s why. This was two coats.

Sephora by OPI Teal We Meet Again Sephora by OPI Havana Nights Collection Summer 2010 Swatches & Review
Teal We Meet Again

Teal We Meet Again is a gorgeous jewel-toned sea-blue shimmery duochrome. It flashes green and purple. The duochrome isn’t super noticeable on the nail as much as in the bottle, which is disappointing. Either way I love the color. It’s like a mermaid! This was two coats. I think someone asked me when I posted Sally Hansen Project Runway if this was a dupe and no, it’s definitely not.

Sephora by OPI Rumba Romance Sephora by OPI Havana Nights Collection Summer 2010 Swatches & Review
Rumba Romance

Rumba Romance is a bronze with gold micro-glitter and OH MY GOD it’s horrific on me. I thought it would be hit or miss when I saw the pic online, but then as soon as I saw it in person, I knew it was gonna be a bad scene. This just clashes so hard with my skin because it’s so warm and yellow. But I’m sure it would look good on someone, haha! This was three, gloopy, coats.

The other two new colors are Caliente Coral, which is a “spicy” orange and Havana Dreams, which is a pale sky blue.

These are now available on Sephora’s website and they retail for $9.00 each.

What do you guys think about these?

Oh No!! Rumba Romance is my favorite!!! :( I’m sad you hate it and since I’m kinda pale like you that means it probably wont look good on me either (even though in the picture I don’t think it looks at all bad on you)! RR is the only unique one to me and its gorgeous! Thanks for posting these :D

    • Hi Dori,

I have very yellow skin so it clashes. Hard to tell that close up, but trust me, hahaha!

I picked up Caribbean Cocktail last weekend – I thought it was going to be much richer than it turned out when I put it on my toes. As you said, pretty blah. It seems like “Teal We Meet Again” would have been a better choice…

    • Hi Rachael,

Yeah it didn’t blow my mind at all, I way preferred Teal We Meet Again!

9.00 each is too much for me. I only pay that for super unique colours or amazing formula. BB Couture polish is 9 dollars but their colours are amazing and hard to dupe. I’ve never been too impressed with the few SOPI’s I’ve purchased.

    • Hi Serena,

My fav by them hands down is Metro Chic, love at first sight!

  • The first one and the third one are gorgeous !! I like the last one too, Carribean Cocktail didn’t attract me at all, even if I love blues =)

I second on Rumba Romance. It was my favorite when I saw these and the only one I bought! Love it!

  • Hmmm nothing calling to me there. Also, the first one doesn’t look like it really “goes” with the others that you have, making it appear a kind of odd collection in my book.
And I’m with you on the bottle shape!

Love most of these polishes, but was really surprised when I was in Sephora last week and they are $9! The official OPI is only $8.50 at the Trade Secret across the hall in mall I was in. It stopped me from buying any b/c I thought they would cost less than the other OPIs.

None of these scream “must have” for me. Thanks for swatching, Kelly!

I have tan skin and Rumba Romance looks *horrible* on me too. I also have the light blue one (can’t remember the name) from this collection and it’s pretty, but not necessarily unique. I’d like to have Read my Palms and Teal We Meet Again though! Caribbean Cocktail reminds me of a polish from China Glaze’s Caribbean collection (the one with all the blues) hmmm….

    Thanks for the review!!

I bought Read My Palm at a Sephora store. They have tester bottles for all their colors. Embarrassingly (is that a word?), I had all different colors on the nails of one hand when I checked out. Kind of gawdy, I know. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stick around to get 2 coats of each color on each nail to form a better opinion. The teal one is impressing me more now that I see it w/more than one coat, duh…so I may go back to get that one.

    Heyy Kelly!!

Why didn’t you swatch HAVANA DREAMS?? I was reeeeally looking up to seeing that nail polish on you. Even though other blogs have swatches of this collection but they aren’t as professional looking as yours. So can you pleeeeeeeaseeee swatch HAVANA DREAMS?

    May 24, 2010
    • Hi JP,

I didn’t buy it so won’t be swatching it, sorry! It didn’t appeal enough to me to spend the bucks on it.

They are all nice, but I’m not sure I’m going to take the plunge. Teal is my favorite. Wish the Rumba was more flattering…a deeper, sparkly bronze (not so yellow-y) would have been perfect for summer. Totally off topic, but did you see the colors coming out from MAC for the To The Beach Collection? The avocado green is a creme version of Kelly’s Green from BB. You know what they say, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

    • Hi SB_Sweetie,

I did see those and will be getting In The Buff. It’s not a dupe though, it’s more of a nude/avocado. Not as green as Kelly’s Green. :)

  • I was at Sephora the other day and bought Teal We Meet Again…I haven’t tried it yet, but now I really want to!

As for the others…bleh. Read My Palm was the only other one I considered buying, but I ended up not making the plunge.

The teal is my favorite, but it’s the end of the month and, alas, I have no more $ left. I need a good summer polish and have been considering going orange or yellow, but I don’t think Rumba is the one. I have your same skin tone, so it’s great seeing it on you first before I waste any money on it!

I just can’t bring myself to buy this brand. The bottle looks like something used in a medical procedure . . . an icky medical procedure.

  • Of course that mint green is my favourite. I just love mints. Rumba is my least favourite. Not my type of color at all. Nice swatches. ;)
