Orly Sweet Collection for Spring 2010 Swatches & Review

Hidey ho, it’s Thursday!

Orly has a new spring collection out for 2010 called Sweet. This collection is an homage to days gone by, reminiscent of Jackie O’s pillbox hats. Each of these polishes come with a mini lip gloss in a matching color and flavor.

These colors are creme pastels, but they are not the chalky kind. The formula on these vary a bit. One was thick and streaky but the rest were pretty nice.

I know some of you are sick of pastel colors, but I happen to love them. These make me want spring here ASAP! Check them out!

Lemonade

Lemonade is a cool lemon yellow. This reminds me of my brother’s old 1969 Camero. The color was the original yellow from back in the day and this is very similar. This was the problem child though in terms of application. It was thick and streaky and a bit hard to get even. I wish I knew why all yellows were like this! I love that it’s a cool yellow, because I can’t do the warm ones. This was three coats.

Cotton Candy

Cotton Candy is a light pink. Sorry this is a bad picture because the sun had gone by the time I took it, so it looks darker than it really is. This was fairly light going on so I used three coats. Nice and smooth application though.

Lollipop

Lollipop is a lavender creme. This has a lot of pink in it and it’s one of the nicest lavender pastels I’ve used. This was very opaque and I could almost have gotten away with one coat, but I used two.

Pixy Stix

Pixy Stix is a medium pink creme. The formula on this was spectacular! I don’t know why but it was like butter. I didn’t think this would be one of my favorite ones by just looking at the bottle, but when it was on, it was very pretty. This was three coats for maximum coverage.

Gumdrop

Gumdrop is a turquoise creme. This isn’t mint green, so I’m not going to compare it to all the mints out there. This is a blue/green. It’s totally gorgeous. Application was great on this and super opaque. This was two coats.

Snowcone

Snowcone is a cornflower blue. This is my favorite. I happen to L.O.V.E. the color cornflower blue on everything, clothes, polish, paint, etc., so this was easy for me to love. This was very opaque also in almost one coat, but I used two.

Here are the little cute lip glosses that go with each polish. They hang on a little string around the neck of the bottle. Cute right? I haven’t tried them yet, but suspect they are probably pretty sheer.

Overall I am VERY happy with this collection. There isn’t one that I don’t like a lot. I think after China Glaze’s Up & Away, this is my second favorite spring collection I have seen yet!

This collection will be available in the beginning of April and they will sell for $7.50 each.

Ok Internet, do you like these? How do you feel about pastels?

These are so pretty, they’re pastels that I like! The Lollipop color kind of reminds me of the Panda color from the Hong Kong collection.

OMG THESE are pastels to die for! They are so gorgeous, so much more powerful in colour then some of the other companies! Just gorgeous!

How close is Lemonade to CG’s Lemon Fizz?

      Hi Lau,

Yay! I would say it’s pretty much dead on to Lemon Fizz.

  • February 4, 2010

I am all over Snowcone. I love cornflower or periwinkle in general so that’s an instant buy for me. Also like the look of Lemonade and Pixy Stix. I’m a fan of opaque pastels and I’m happy to see such great ones for spring. Can’t wait for these.

For sure getting 4 of these! I know the yellow is a dupe for the China Glaze Up & Away pastel yellow, not sure about the purple. But the rest are unique to me!

    Dori

uggh i love these so much! im gonna order cotton candy, pixi stix and gumdrop. the lavender one doesn’t thrill me and neither does the cornflower blue (sorry i know you love it but it’s just an odd color to me and i cant picture it on my nails at all) and i like lemonade but i’ve heard its a dupe for chg lemon fizz which i already own (and have yet to wear…) but lemon fizz has better application. im so excited about these and the lip glosses! i’ve never even liked an orly polish.. they’re the most boring mainstream polish brand imo but this collection has got me jumpin on the orly train (for now, until they come out with another boring/ugly collection). love these swatches! thanks. oh btw, i’m thinking about putting one of these lip glosses on that little thing on my cell phone (where people put little danglies).. i havent done that in probably 4 years since i was in high school but these lipglosses are so cute i think i might just need to try it out. :)

    • February 4, 2010

      Hi Dori,

Orly has actually gotten much better in the last year or two. I never used to like their stuff, but they are pretty nice now. The formula is almost always excellent and I think they have some really unique colors out now.

    jamie

I do really like these, but I’ve got 4 of the Up and Away polishes I haven’t even worn yet, plus I just ordered 4 of the new Essies and these colors seem like the intersection of those two collections. I tend to only get Orly polishes if the color is really unique because I prefer the formulas of OPI, Essie and CG. I’m wondering if lollipop is closer to “so lilacable” from Essie or “pandamonium pink” from the new OPI’s.

    • February 4, 2010

      Hi jamie,

Yeah I understand the too much polish not enough fingers syndrome, lol! I have yet to swatch the Essie’s but I suspect they are different from these.

  • February 4, 2010

There are some really pretty colours in this collection! It’s so cute that they come with little lipglosses too.

    Sanna

I can’t believe I have to wait until April!!! :-) I love pastels. I started to wear China Glaze’s pastels immediately when I got them although I’m not sure how appropriate those spring colours are when there is tons of snow outside ;-)

    • February 4, 2010

      Hi Sanna,

I hear ya, but I cannot help wearing these. They call to me, especially Snowcone!

  • February 4, 2010

I can’t imagine EVER going tired of pastels. I’ve been waiting for them for years, frankening my owns while waiting. I’m gonna have them all, and also Illamasquas pre-spring collection. *double sqeeeeek*

    Tiffanie

I love these colors, especially snowcone…but i cant help thinking that most of these are exactly, if not very similar, to the china glaze polishes from up and away.

    • February 4, 2010

      Hi Tiffanie,

Lemon Fizz is, but none of the others are dupes.

  • February 4, 2010
    Ally

Need gumdrop and snow cone. They look so yummy. Thanks for the swatches. Now the hard part is waiting.

  • February 4, 2010

omg, Snowcone looks so fabulous! I love it!

  • February 4, 2010

Turqoise?! I definitely have to own that. And Snowcone is the one thing missing from Up & Away — I was so sad when it finally dawned on me that China Glaze didn’t include a pastel blue. I love pastels, and January/February just feels like the perfect time to wear them: they’re fresh, bright, “newborn” feeling colors, perfect for the new year. These are exactly what I’ve been craving, but since I have to wait until April anway, we’ll see how many I end up with.

I love the collection! I think I might get all except for Lollipop, I might try and go for a different lavendar. And I still don’t know if I should get Lemon Fizz or Lemonade. Although, Lemonade comes with a cute lip gloss. I’m a sucker for gimmicky things like that. Thanks for the lovely swatches.

I have to say, I’m one of those that has grown tired of the pastels already. One reason is because the pastel polishes I have (very few) apply pretty wonky for me. But I must say, you’ve fueled my lemming for this entire collection — I don’t think there’s a color in the bunch that won’t work for me. Now, if only I could trust that they’ll apply as well for me as they do for you…

    Hi Kelly:

There all gorgeous pastel colors. I never thought I would love pastels but these are very chic. Lemonade, (gorgeous yellow), Cotton Candy (another soft pink color that is so pretty), Lollipop, Snow cone and Gumdrop (could be a nice teal color for Teal for Toes), and Pixy Stix, (it’s a nice pink creme color I love it and would not mind wearing it inside), I want them all. They look so beautiful on your nails and can’t wait till April 2010 but I think I will skip the matching lip gloss, LOL.

You make a guy feel so good about choosing nail varnish with this collection, Kudos.

    Kate & Zena

I’m sorry, VV, but I have to say I am sick of seeing pastels. I like pastels as much as the next person, but three collections of pastels in one season is guaranteed to make me sick of seeing pastels. I need variety. Thank God OPI didn’t do a full pastel collection like ChG, Essie and Orly so I can get my bright and rich color fix.

I tend to think pastels look better in winter to match the weather than spring. I like brighter or richer colors for spring. I’m currently debating whether to paint my nails with Illamasqua’s Muse or Rampage. They came in today right after I had part one of my root canal. I can’t decide which to use. One minute it’s Muse, the next it’s Rampage. Muse. Rampage. Muse.

    hey kelly,
i was just wondering if you”ve ever heard of or used nailbeauty4u.com. it is a vendor on amazon and they are selling this collection already for $3.99. i’m just wondering if anyone has used it because i want to know if it’s legit. LOVE this collection, it has replaced china glaze’s as my favorite spring 2010 collection!

    thanks!

    • February 4, 2010

      Hi julie,

Yes I have and not in a good way. They stole a bunch of my pics and didn’t remove them until China Glaze contacted them and asked them. Some people also said they had bad customer service experiences with them. Sorry!
