Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics Nail Polish Swatches & Review

It’s FINALLY Friday! This week has kinda sucked for me, I am glad it’s over!

I have something fun for you that you probably haven’t yet seen. It’s a new line of nail polish by a Canadian based company called Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics. Here is their description of what they are all about.

“Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics is centered on the belief that all women should be free to express their personal edginess in a fun and empowering way. Our products act as a tool, providing an avenue and philosophy to engage, explore or rediscover the edginess that animates all of us.”

Cheeky Monkey is big-3 free and their products are non-toxic, rating only a 1 on the skin deep safety cosmetics database (which ranges from a 1-10, 10 being the most toxic).

From a personal standpoint, I love the packaging and names, they are really cute and sassy.

The formula on these was pretty damn fabulous. The lighter ones did need three coats as they were a little sheer, but the polish flowed very nicely. The darker ones needed to dry a little longer in-between coats because if not, you might get some cuticle drag. But that’s not a big deal, just wait 2-3 minutes and you should be fine. Peep ‘em!

Cheeky Monkey Hangover Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics Nail Polish Swatches & Review
Hangover

Hangover is a shimmery pale taupe. When I first applied this I thought it was going to be too sheer and boring for me. But after the second coat, then the third, I was very surprised at how nice it turned out. This isn’t your standard mushroom taupe, it’s more of a cafe au lait color, and with multi-colored (blue, green, pink) shimmer. It’s REALLY flattering on me, and I think even appropriate for more conservative work places. This was three coats.

Cheeky Monkey Born Again Virgin Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics Nail Polish Swatches & Review
Born Again Virgin

Born Again Virgin is a pale baby pink creme, with maybe a hint of peach. This isn’t a pastel color and not chalky or streaky at all. This is also really pretty and more on the conservative side. I don’t have a lot of pinks like this, and find it very flattering. This was three coats.

Cheeky Monkey Romp Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics Nail Polish Swatches & Review
Romp

Romp is a deep royal purple with heavy blue and purple iridescent shimmer. This is one of those colors when I put it on I cannot stop staring at my nails. It glows. It’s truly freakin’ amazing! This was on the thicker side, so wait a couple minutes in-between coats. This was three coats.

Cheeky Monkey Cougar Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics Nail Polish Swatches & Review
Cougar

Cougar is a true cherry red creme. It looks a lot darker in the bottle than it applied, whcih I was actually happy about. I thought it was going to be a plain ‘ole boring deep red, but instead I got this amazing bright, happy looking red that is super fabulous against pale skin. To me, this is a “Mad Men” kind of red. icon smile Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics Nail Polish Swatches & Review This was three coats.

Overall I am very excited about this new company and their polish. They are based in Canada, but have started shipping to the US. They currently have about 35 colors in their line and they are $15.00 each. You can find their website here.

So what do you guys think of these colors?

  • Pretty colors but the pricing is super high. I think I’m spoiled with Color Club prices.

  • I love the bottles, that is the coolest idea, I wish other companies would do that. I like the ones that put the names on the front, or China Glaze used to put the collection on the front. It makes them all that much more individual and they’re all important, they all have names.

Loving the fun names—hysterical!! My fav is Romp as I can’t get enough of dark metallic purple….I’m wearing Opi Ink today and it seems similar but maybe closer to Russian Navy. Thanks for the swatches and Happy Friday to everyone!!!

  • For such wonderfully creative names they have very boring colors. I didn’t see any that appealed to me.

I think if these were less expensive I’d be happy being as I’m Canadian and I do love supporting local companies! But I’m definitely spoiled by China Glaze and Orly over at Sally’s.
I am curious though, this companies color names remind me very much of Orgasm. I’m not sure if it was because of the really bad experience with their people but I know you and a lot of others were getting on their case about the names. These names are just as bad yet this time they are sassy?
I’m not trying to get on your case, I know dealing with someone like you had described can really sour all your thoughts towards a company but it was definitely the first thing I thought of when I read this review.

    • Hi Nicole,

I think Romp, Born Again Virgin and Hangover are a lot less “sleazy” names than Dripping Wet, Legally Pink and Wet Dreams, don’t you?

      February 5, 2010
  • Yikes, 15 dollars is a little much for non-RBL quality.

  • oooh i loooove hangover but i cant help but feel it looks like $OPI’s Under My Trench

    February 5, 2010
    • Hi Emily,

It is a similar base, but Under My Trench Coat is gold only shimmer, this is multi-colored (but hard to see in my pic).

  • Really cool! I love just about everything about this company. Had to visit their website after seeing your review. I am silly for Trailer Trash and Raunchy Bitch…but I like Hangover and Romp here.

  • ooh, very cool!! Loveing Romp but the other colors, and the packaging and names, are very nice, too. I am wondering if that’s 15 Canadian dollars and not US??? That would be a little more reasonable, I think. If it’s US then I would have to stick with Essie’s Aruba Blue and call it a day. Thanks for sharing this interesting new-to-me brand!!!

  • As someone who cannot use a lot of nailpolishes because of chemical sensitivities, I am very glad to see more polishes becoming available without the big 3 toxic chemicals. The bottle graphics are very cool, but I can do without some of the sleazy names.
