What’s the Deal?
Yes I’m still harping about phones, in a manner of speaking. I just came from the bathroom at work. Don’t worry this isn’t going to get gross.
A woman was in another stall next to me. All fine and dandy right? Wrong! She was on her cell phone chattering away as though she was in her own private office. I have actually noticed this A LOT lately at work, particularly with the cleaning crew for some reason, and someone who I work with!
I find it completely disgusting and rude. I mean think about it. You are on the cell phone with your hands (usually). You use those hands to do things I would rather not discuss here, in a bathroom stall. That is why you wash your hands. But do you also wipe down your cell phone with a Clorox wipe? Chances are, no. Which means you might as well have dipped your hands into the toilet because the germs are going right back on your hands (and the side of your face) as soon as you touch your phone. This is why the flu spreads, but that’s a story for another time…
Everyone should know that its also totally rude, unless they are half donkey or something. I mean come on, the bathroom is a private area, and not exactly the kind of place you want turned into a sound stage!
My only recourse for this disgusting practice is to flush the toilet a bunch of times and swing the door open hard so it slams into the wall. I also tend to cough really loud. Basically I am trying to A. Piss the person off B. Make them aware that what they are doing might not be cool and C. Make the person on the other end say “OMG, are you in the BATHROOM????”. But it never seems to work.
Have you experienced this?

That is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves!! Those people are so rude, and also it feels like they’re invading my privacy in a way. I experienced this almost every time I used the Cast Member bathroom when I worked at Disney. I don’t even have words, it just gets under my skin so much! lol.

Hi Meghan,
Stop the presses, you worked as a cast member at Disney??? OMG I am fascinated with the whole underground world of Disney! So interesting to me. What did you do there?
Ok back to the subject at hand. It really is an invasion of privacy! I wish there was some kind of law against it.
I don’t understand people who can’t stop a conversation when they need to go to the bathroom. They’re probably the same people who are on the phone from the moment they set foot outside the office, doing their best to piss off drivers who are actually paying attention to the road.
On the Disney topic: I once performed there with my choir. They let us in the back and went CRAZY about how we couldn’t take ANY pictures. We saw a bunch of cast members and a ton of the parade stuff in these huge garages. It was pretty cool, though it ruined the charm a little to see the cast members without their heads on and stuff. :/
ANYWAY, I find this habit of talking on the phone in the bathroom disgusting. I mean, do they do it at home too? Is it so hard to just say “Hey, I’ll call you back in a minute or two, ok?”. Same thing with driving..just call the person later! Nothing is important enough to risk the lives of the people in the car with you and the people in the cars around you.
Ugh, that’s bad. I’ve never dealt with the issue of people on cell phones in the public bathroom, but I deal all the time with more than my fair share of people on cell phones while driving. Especially when I’m trying to walk somewhere. By the way, do any of you know people who (inside your home) use the bathroom while trying to talk to someone else on your house phone? Because that gets on my last nerve.

That is so incredibly annoying! I HATE when people do this. I’m glad I’m not the only person who is annoyed by this. It’s so freaking disgusting! I really strive to be as loud as possible while I’m in there (banging the door, obnoxious rolling the toilet paper, a lot of flushing, etc.) but it never seems to bother them. Ugh WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?! Personally if I were on the other end of the phone I would hang up!
I’d just…. no. Just no.
People are so disgusting.

Kelly, I’ve been in the tunnels under the Magic Kingdom a few times, but I actually worked in merchandise (retail) at the World of Disney in Downtown Disney. It’s the really big store you get lost in. It was so much fun being able to meet people from all over the world and help create a little magic in their day. But of course I had to deal with all of the grumpy stupid people too.
As for the phone, stalls should have reception blockers built into them so people can’t talk when they’re in them. I know it’s possible, but it is just too much to ask! I really wish I had the nerve to just say to these people something rude and disrespectful and tell them to get off their phone, but that just isn’t me–I’m too meek and polite! lol.
Heather, yes there are very strict rules about no photography backstage at Disney. Of course cast members sometimes get around it taking pictures in breakrooms and stuff, but the idea is to help keep the magic real by not spoiling it. I’ve seen characters without heads, characters smoking or eating lunch, riding the bus back to costuming, all sorts of things you just wouldn’t think of! I don’t think it ever gets old, you just sit there and giggle, lol.
What you said about people not just saying they’ll call the person back brings me to one of my other big pet peeves–people talking on their phone when I’m ringing them up. Seriously, what is so important in their life that they can’t get off the darn phone for three minutes! Ugh! That’s all I’m going to say on that otherwise I’ll just start ranting!
People just need to learn some common courtesy (like us! *wink*)

LOL, that is gross. I don’t like talking on the phone either, I used to when I was in middle school but I prefer texting now.
