Essie Winter 2009 Swatches and Review

Hallo there!

Essie’s got a cute new collection of three polishes for winter 2009 that I’ve got for ya.

These are all new colors, and though you might not immediately think of them as “winter” colors, they really fit right in with the season in in my eyes.

The formula on these is pretty great, as Essie’s tend to be. One of them was a wee bit on the thick side, but didn’t cause me any troubles. More on that later. Peep ‘em out!

Essie Rock Candy
Rock Candy

Rock Candy is a super sheer pink. This is REALLY sheer, it almost looks like just a top coat on my nails. Great if you just want something clean, and shiny looking. This was two coats.

Essie Lolipop
Lollipop

Lollipop is a vibrant cherry red creme. I love this color on me, it’s on the cool side so it works with my skin tone. It’s bright, cheery, and reminds me of Christmas. This was two coats.

Essie Mint Candy Apple
Mint Candy Apple

Mint Candy Apple is a cool blue-based mint green creme. Gorgeous. This is everything that MAC’s Peppermint Patti wished it had been. This was the one that was a little thick, but it wound up being fine. This was three coats.

You can find these on Essie’s site here, and they are $8.00 each.

Whaddya think?

I don’t know how I feel about that green on me though, and I love green I just think it’s a bit too bright for my brown skin but that red if vavavoom!

Is it just me or have the last couple of Essie collections just been “meh”?

      Hi Amy,

I actually like 2 out of 3 of these so it’s a decent hit for me :)

I love the minty green, I had to order it immediately after I saw your swatches (it was a bargain, $4.80 from nailetc, the shipping costs are lower for international customers there than in transdesign).

    Rock Candy looks so sad.

      Hi Purple Koala,

Rock Candy is for the nail polish lover, who doesn’t really like nail polish LOL!

Yeah, unfortunately, I have to agree with Amy…the colors are meh. But your swatches are as beautiful as always Kelly! :-)

I bought the red and the green and tried them out at home already! The red is really cheerful and, I agree, says “holiday” without glitter. The green I really liked in the bottle, but on my skin tone it wasn’t appealing — right up until I slathered a soft pink glitter on top of it. I used Candie from China Glaze, and it added crazy glitter and changed the tone just enough to make it work for me beautifully.

I love the green… the other 2 are pretty uninspired. Could rock candy be any more of a nothing polish. I put the green on the if you see it pick it up for me list for my friends.

“Mint Candy Apple” is nice. But it could be more smokey. ;D

I love mint candy apple and lollipop! I don’t have any extremly bright reds, and lollipop looks perfect.

i love lollipop and the green, but i hate the name “mint candy apple”. it makes me think of chewed up mint gum on an appl

How did Mint Candy Apple and Lollipop (which completely rock!) end up with Rock Candy (which is completely blah.)? They’re so bright and it’s so sad and colorless. Oh well, two out of three’s not bad!

Honestly, I’m wearing 2 coats of rock candy right now and I love it! I’m a sucker for jellies, and I love that this makes my stained nails look PERFECT with no visible tipwear and it’s super shiny. I think it would look even better with mint candy apple or lollipop konaded over it.

I definitely want to get Mint Candy Apple. The red I’m sure I already have one like it. The sheer I don’t want at all. Thanks for swatching these.

I like Lollipop but I don`t think that it`s not an appropriate color for winter.

would you consider doing a side by side comparison of Oh, Tiff and Mint Candy Apple? I think there is another varnish or so that looks close too. Pretty please :)

    • November 8, 2009

      Hi carol,

Actually an easy way for you to tell the difference is to pull up my swatches of both of these in two different browser windows, and look at them side by side. Oh, Tiff! is Tiffany blue, and Mint Candy Apple is mint green. They are definitely different colors. Thx!
