How To File Your Nails Video Tutorial

Morning Internet!

It’s Monday, yet again so I thought I would show you something that might take your mind off the beginning of the week doldrums.

This video is one I thought was really needed since a lot of people ask me how I file my nails. It’s pretty basic, but I think there are a couple good tips on here that I learned when I started blogging, and they really helped me.

If you enjoy this video and my others, please consider subscribing to my YouTube Channel, under the name VampyVarnish7 (someone has VampyVarnish already if you can believe it!).

I was at a nail event put on by TNG. One of the vendors there was talking about glass nailfies. she informed me that you do “saw back and forth” with a glass file. The glass file fills in the nail with the nail dust as you saw back and forth so that the nail tip is stronger. I used one on my mother and she loved how her nails felt, so much so that I had to pick one up for her at the beauty supply store. I got her one by Nail Tek, it was also only one sided. At Sally’s the glass file is between five and seven dollars. I enjoy your blog.

      Hi Siameseflame,

Interesting I have never heard that from any nail tech before. The file I got at Sally’s was about $2.00. Thanks!

Good suggestion on leaving a dark color polish on. That would definitely help in making sure that they are even. Love that you are making vids.

I’ve always read not to file into the sides of your nails. It’s supposed to weaken your nail. I do file the sides of my nails so that they’re smooth. Just don’t go to crazy with the filing deep into the sides. I’d love to see how you clean up your nails. The majority of the bloggers don’t polish into the cuticle. I don’t know how to get my polish to look that neat. I just can’t get it even. Maybe you can help.

      Hi Lucy,

I only file the side of tat one crooked nail to straighten it more. The rest I just to the tip.

I plan on doing a video on painting and clean up soon, so stay tuned! :)

I never thought of being able to see the shape better with polish on, that’s a good tip! (Har har, tip, no pun intended.) Also yesterday after watching this video I planned to try filing with polish on, then I forgot and removed my polish before filing anyway and didn’t remember that I’d planned to leave it on until I was almost done. DOH! Thanks for the video!

Great video! I’m such a follower! As soon as you said that square nails were dated, I began filing mine round, and I must say they look much more sophisticated. Glass files are way better but I have no luck with them; I’ve broken at least 3 this year. I placed an order for a new one along with a bottle of OPI remover. Zoya’s remover is great but it does cost a lot for some nail polish remover. Hopefully I’ll like the OPI. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this site :)

Great video! Love glass files- they have done wonders for my nails. I also have a crooked nail, my right pinky. It must be a hereditary thing because my mother and grandmother both have the same crooked fingernail on the same finger/hand. Weird!

I have the same file (in the same color) and I lurrrrve it! I convinced my mom to get one too! Great tips in the video and I have also have an extremely crooked right pinkie finger…it just grew out that way. Also, how do you get your polish to look so good? I use Seche Vite but my nails always seem to chip easily :(

    Hi Kelly,

Great video! Quick question for you — are you using an external mic? If yes, which one? The audio sounds really good.

Kelly, what kind of nail polish remover do you use? I was using what I thought was acetone-free, and it was not. :( That little fact completely explains my weak and splitting nails. Do you have a brand that you specifically recommend?
    Thanks!

      Hi Sonya,

Yep, I used it on my How To Remove Glitter Tutorial. It’s OPI’s Expert Touch. It’s nice and gentle and has a lavender scent. I get it online (cheaper that way).

Great video. I’ll be on the lookout for one of those glass files. I appreciate all of your tips, as I’m just getting back into polishing my nails. I’d love to see a video of you cleaning up your nails/cuticles after polishing them. I know before you said that you use a brush for cleanup. Your nails always look so beautiful!

I have the La Crosse single sided, plain blue one and it’s fine, I think it was like 3 or 4 bucks. Then I found super cute double sided one with painted flowers on the end — at my CARWASH. LOL
Thanks for the tutorial Kelly — a lot of people don’t know about the wonders of the glass file. :)

good video :) i also find that a glass file works the best for me too, i always have less breakage and peeling when i use my glass file as opposed to a cheapy emery board.
