NARS Tokaido Express for Fall 2009

Morning peeps! NARS has a really fabulous fall 2009 collex coming out and it includes an absolutely stunning nail polish color called Tokaido Express.

I can honestly say I do not own a single other nail polish that looks like this one. They describe it as being a “black amethyst infused with gold” which is somewhat accurate from what I saw, but it’s so much more…Check it out!

Tokaido Express macro shot

When I look at this color I don’t really think of it as a typical “blackened” polish. It’s definitely dark and vampy, but it’s this amazing plum color that is packed with gold, pink and lavender micro shimmer. You can see in the macro shot above all the colored shimmer and when you see it in real life, it’s really quite stunning. This does not look black indoors either, which is a huge plus. The formula was fabulous as you would expect NARS to be. It was smooth, flowed nicely into the nails and totally opaque in two coats. This color for me is one of THE best colors for fall I have seen yet and I think I am going to get a lot of wear out of it!

You can find this as well as other NARS polishes on their website here or at Nordstrom. They retail for $16.00 each.

What do you guys think about this one, is it on your fall *must have* list or does the price turn you off?

  • I love most polishes that are purple/plum, and the shimmer effect just adds to the Wow Factor – it’s really stunning, but I can’t justify spending that much on one bottle. If I get a new job where I earn more, maybe I’ll splurge and get it. But for now, I’ll just drool over your eye candy! :)

Since I have never tried any of these, I’m curious as to how you would rate NARS, Chanel, and Rescue Beauty Lounge nail polishes in terms of application/formula. Which do you consider the best of these 3?

  • It’s a stunning color and suitable for fall, but I guess I won’t buy it in this price. looks great on you!

That is a lovely shade of plum. All that sparkle is gorgeous. I hope someone else has the same color. I think it’s too expensive.

    Hi Glockoma,

I really think the application on all 3 is great. As far as wear, I have better luck with NARS and RBL more so than Chanel. Having said that though, no polish lasts more than 2 days on me without starting to wear so I can’t really tell you for long term, sorry!

NARS and RBL are a lot cheaper than Chanel for sure. Chanel is a total rip off, all you are paying for is their logo basically, it doesn’t mean the quality of the polish is any better than say China Glaze or Zoya.

I think it’s beautiful but that swatch screams “dupe” of Sephora’s Violet Amethyst, which is also very overpriced considering the bottle size but is still only $5.

    Hi Loki,

Actually it’s really not a lot like Violet Amethyst.
This isn’t as dark, is less “red” and more plum and has much smaller
shimmery particles. It may be kind of hard to tell in pics online, but
I just put the bottles side by side and there are definite differences.
This is obviously more expensive, but the bottle is much bigger and the
formula blows the Sephora formula away, which is pretty mediocre!

I agree, Sephora’s formula is the worst! Good to know that it’s not a dupe because I like the looks of this one. Thanks!

  • Hi Kelly:

I can see why you love this shade so much. It has everything, it’s dark, it’s plum (perfect shade for Fall) and it’s packed as you say, “with gold, pink and lavender..” which looks super on your nails. Plus, it’s not the Sephora Violet Amethyst as other fans have mentioned.

In my estimation, if the color looks super on you, it’s worth the price you pay. Consider it part of you normal everyday routine when changing outfits and if we have a quick summer, Fall is just around the color. I think this would look great with the dark brown and red sweaters for college, work or play. Maybe, these are the choices some woman have to make. Do I buy the killer heels? or the fabulous handbag? or pay something extra for a super nail color that will top off all my Fall outfits.

    (((((Love Kelly)))))

Very beautiful and so me. I love darker shades and plums. Unfortunately, I don’t have the funds at all, so I will love it from a far. It is truly unique.

  • GORGEOUS color! But from what I’ve seen of the upcoming fall colors, there will be many gorgeous ones. I would love to add this one to my collection, but will take some time to weigh it out. I can have 2 bottles of another good quality brand for the price of this one. It does look really great on you, tho…… Knowing me, I’ll break down eventually and it will be mine – lol!

  • That is a gorgeous color. It is a bit pricey but seeing how I just pre-ordered Lancome’s Indigo Paris which is a bit more than that I guess to me it doesn’t matter. As long as I like the color, I would be willing to pay for it.

I love this too, but it looks similar to some polishes I already own. Combined with the price tag, and I don’t think I’ll be buying!

Every time I think of not buying purple/plum colors, I get sucked back in. Bad Vampy Varnish for showing this to me. :-) It’s very pretty.

  • Wow, this color is gorgeous – all the different shimmers in it, plus it’s purple!!! However, $16 is really expensive. I could buy 2 OPI and get more wear out of 2 polishes than just one.

Stunning color! Plus I don’t really have many plum colors so I think I have to add this to my fall colors.
