Zoya Matte Velvet Limited Edition for Fall 2009

The soon to be released Zoya Matte Velvet collection for fall 2009 is here and is fabulous. Instead of being flat matte, these have a very subtle shimmery finish that gives them a velvety feel, rather than some other brands more chalky feel.

It’s my opinion that these really are much better than OPI’s recent matte collection. I feel as though OPI was a bit lazy in that they didn’t even create new colors, they just used old ones with a new formula. Also with the exception of La-Pazitively, OPI’s are very chalky and flat. The instructions for these (as well as OPI’s) say don’t wear with a base coat (or top coat obviously) but I did anyway and they worked out just fine.

As far as formula, like most matte polishes, these dried FAST. These dried faster than KO, OPI and ManGlaze so when applying, work fast and even! They were all just two coats, but you could probably do one thick one and it would look fine.

Zoya Loredana Zoya Matte Velvet Limited Edition for Fall 2009
Loredana

Loredana is a great gunmetal grey with a subtle silvery shimmer. I love almost every grey I have tried and this one is no exception. Stay tuned for comparisons below of this next to ManGlaze Fuggen Ugly.

Zoya Dovima Zoya Matte Velvet Limited Edition for Fall 2009
Dovima

Dovima is what they call black, but when compared next to true blacks, this is more of a dark charcoal. Whatever you call it, I love it. Totally velvety and gorgeous! Below is a comparison pic of this next to KO’s Black and ManGlaze The Death Tar.

Zoya Posh Zoya Matte Velvet Limited Edition for Fall 2009
Posh

Posh is a wine colored red that I really didn’t think I would like. Turns out I was WAY OFF, I think this might be my favorite one! There is something totally mesmerizing about this color and texture combined.

topcoat Zoya Matte Velvet Limited Edition for Fall 2009
Posh w/topcoat

After I saw Scrangie’s pics of Posh with a top coat, I couldn’t resist. Totally amazing, I can’t decide which way I like it better. It’s like the shiniest, juiciest, ruby red apple you ever saw!

Zoya Comparison Zoya Matte Velvet Limited Edition for Fall 2009
Zoya Loredana on pointer & ring,  ManGlaze Fuggen Ugly on middle & pinky

So you can see that Loredana has more of a silver cast to it whereas Fuggen Ugly is more charcoal. Also Loredana is two coats and Fuggen Ugly needs three, but I only used two here. Fuggen Ugly has super fine multi colored shimmer in it, whereas Loredana’s is just silver.

ManGlaze Comparison Zoya Matte Velvet Limited Edition for Fall 2009
In order left to right: KO Black, ManGlaze The Death Tar,  Zoya Dovima

Obviously when you see KO’s Black, you can tell that’s a true black and it’s totally flat with no shimmer. The Death Tar is a bit lighter with fine multi colored particles in it (which you can see REALLY well if you add a top coat) and Dovima looks to be more charcoal colored with silver.

I am super duper excited about this collection and am REALLY hoping someone comes out with a dark green matte at some point soon. These should be available July 1st. Which are your favs?

  • Damn the man. I still need to get KO’s blackout. Zoya’s have nothing on that grand splendor. In Scrangie’s pic of KO Black it seemed powdery. I’ve seen several pics of KO’s Black but they all seem different. is it powdery or flat? What’s the texture/feel like? I don’t want to spend $22 on KO but the black is so velvety looking

I just got my Zoya Matte colors. Love them all. I agree, we need a green matte.

Ooh I want Posh…and Loredana…okay I want the whole collection now!

Has anyone tried KO’s Flatte Top top coat? Does it get things super KO flat or just satiny like Orly’s matte top?

    Hi Crotchfairy,

KO’s black is powdery. My comparison swatch wasn’t a good pic, but if you search for my regular swatches of it, you’ll see it’s powdery effect. It’s smooth, not chalky feeling. LOVE it!

Love Posh and Loredana!! You’re right, Kelly, these are way better looking than OPI’s. I like the velvet-y finish a lot more than just a flat, wall paint finish.
I’m excited to see Orly’s mattes too.

    Hi Laura,

Yeah I agree, the flat wall paint texture kind of gives me the willies when I touch it. It’s like scratching a chalkboard ICK!

I LOVE zoya’s mattes! I’m def getting the grey and red but I want the manglaze black. I’m wondering how realistic it is to get matte polishes though. U can’t use hand creme or top coat and they seem to chip FAST. How does the wear of the zoya mattes compare w/ opi’s?

    Hi Shari,

I have not worn either the OPI’s or Zoya’s for longer than swatching them, so I don’t know about the wear, sorry! I do use hand lotion still with other matte’s though, it’s just silly I think not to!
