Sephora by OPI Mermaid in the Shade Summer 2009 Collection

Sephora by OPI just put out their summer 2009 called Mermaid in the Shade that I am excited to show you today. The formula on all of these was really nice, I had no problems. Some were a bit sheer but that was remedied by an extra coat (or two). All pics taken in sun with no top coat.

Sephora by OPI Water Baby copy Sephora by OPI Mermaid in the Shade Summer 2009 Collection

Water Baby is a light silvery white color with a pearl effect and fine shimmer. This one went on very sheer as I had expected it would so I used three coats. It’s very pretty, though I think I have a lot of other colors like it.

Sephora by OPI Just A Fairy Tail copy Sephora by OPI Mermaid in the Shade Summer 2009 Collection

Just a Fairy-Tail is way cooler in person than in this picture. It’s a silver polish jam packed with super fine green and blue glitter and it has a great rainbow flash to it. It was fairly sheer so I used three coats.

Sephora by OPI Lagoon a Beach copy Sephora by OPI Mermaid in the Shade Summer 2009 Collection

Lagoon-a Beach was much lighter than I had expected it to be, though I still like it a lot. It’s a pretty light blue, also jam packed with very fine multi-colored glitter and it too has the rainbow flash effect. This was three coats.

Sephora by OPI Underwater Fantasy copy Sephora by OPI Mermaid in the Shade Summer 2009 Collection

Underwater Fantasy was probably my favorite one. The color is a cornflower blue (which is one of my favorite colors) and it’s got tons of fine glitter and flashes different colors. It was definitely more opaque than the previous ones I showed, but I still needed a good three coats.

Sephora by OPI Mermaid To Order copy Sephora by OPI Mermaid in the Shade Summer 2009 Collection

Mermaid To Order is awesome and I have nothing else like it! This is a metallic peacock color that was SO opaque I really could have done just one coat, but did two anyway. I didn’t have streaking issues like I do with most metallics either!

Sephora by OPI Blue Grotto copy Sephora by OPI Mermaid in the Shade Summer 2009 Collection

Blue Grotto is a very pretty navy blue creme that was very opaque. I really like this cool, though I don’t really think it’s completely original. I can think of a few other recent medium blue cremes like Essie’s Mesmerize and Misa’s On The Edge that would be very close dupes to this. This was two coats.

Overall I am really happy with this collection, I love seeing the colors all together, so pretty!

Do you think you will be ordering any? You can find them on Sephora’s website here and they retail for $9.00 each.

Hmm, not too thrilled with these colors. The only Sephora by OPI I’ve liked so far is Metro Chic. Not too impressed with their line so far :(

    Hi Sleepy,

I have to agree that Metro Chic is by far their best color, I absolutely love that one!

I really love the two that are more opaque, though I’m not sure I’ll buy the darker blue because I’ve got some colors a lot like that already. Thanks for the swatches — I check this blog often to see what’s new and beautiful!

  • Hmmm… Still haven’t made my mind up about this collection. I’m not a fan of sheers. But some of these colors are quite pretty.

    Hi Styrch,

I agree I am not a huge sheer person either. I really like super pigmented color but I suppose the sheerer ones could work well as layering polishes.

Mermaid to Order looks so pretty, and hey, if it’s also a one-coater, it’s totally calling my name! :D

Lagoon-a Beach also looks nice. Is it similar at all to OPI’s Breathe Life?

    Hi Atomica,

Yes it really could be a one coater it’s very opaque!

Lagoon-a Beach really isn’t that close to Breathe Life. Lagoon-a Beach has tiny glitter particles in it and Breathe Life is just a pearly opalescent shimmer. Breathe Life also has that white/blue/green/pink cast to it depending on the lighting and Lagoon-a Beach is definitely a light blue without the opalescent effect.

YAY! I’ve been waiting for this collection and swatches. I looked for these at my sephora yesterday and they weren’t out yet….I guess I’ll have to keep looking.

I really love cornflower too and wanted underwater fantasy just from the despription alone. Glad to see it is so nice in person. I think I want the mermaid one too. And do you think Lagoona Beach is similar to the Breathe Life OPI?

  • I love Underwater Fantasy and Mermaid to Order. I’ve been trying to buy less polish, but Mermaid to Order looks like one I may have to get!
    Great swatches!

    Hi Amanda,

Yeah I think some Sephora’s put them out on a different schedule which is silly, they should all come out at once!

See my response to Atomica about the comparison between Lagoon-a Beach and Breathe Life.

I love this collection! The darker colors more so I think, but none the less. Beautiful colors.

I really like Lagoon-a Beach and Underwater Fantasy; I normally wouldn’t choose a blue nail polish, but after following your blog for a while, I’m really starting to like it. The sheer colors might be good to start with. Thanks!

    Hi AnneMarie,

I am glad you are starting to like blue! There are really so many great ones out there and like you said, if you’ are kinda shy of blue, start with a pale one!

Thank you! This entry is a dream come true! My dad is in the states now and is offering to pass by Sephora for me. I really wanted to not make mistakes in choosing the colors (last time I did with some). Thanks to your clear, crisp pictures and descriptions I get to choose my colors more wisely. I didn’t think so highly of Blue Grotto, but seeing applied really changed my mind :) I’m glad I saw it now!

    Thank you! Wonderful job!
