The Bravo Channel is Vamping It Up!

Did anyone catch the new Bravo show The Rachel Zoe Project last night? In case you don’t know, Rachel Zoe is a stylist to Hollywood stars dressing them for all kinds of events such as red carpet awards, movie premieres, TV spots, magazine shoots, etc . She’s also a guest editor on Piperlime.com where she picks her favorite shoes at all price points. Anyhoo, the show was quite fascinating to watch (and like a train wreck at the same time)! You will catch my drift if you see any episodes featuring her very outspoken (and slightly nuts) assistant Taylor and their new assistant Brad. The first thing I noticed though was the nail polish both Rachel and Taylor were wearing. At first, Rachel’s seemed to be a nice deep red with shimmer. Then when she went into a business meeting to discuss “branding” herself it was either no polish or extremely pale. After the meeting, it was back to a nice dark brown-ish color. Very nice! Taylor seemed to be wearing straight up black the whole show. Love!

butter LONDON Special Deal!

For all you British lovin’ nail addicts out there, butter LONDON has a great promo going on the month of September for their new Fall/Winter collection. Now through September 30th you can get 5 of their polishes for $40.00. Yes you heard me right, only $40 for FIVE polishes (they are normally $12 each)! The color descriptions from their website are as follows (L-R):
fallo8 e front butter LONDON Special Deal!

Cream Tea: A sheer white, that creates a gorgeous, clean “winter white” on your nail. With such a dark and monochromatic selection on the runways, a set of pale beautiful nails will offset the “Gothic” look you may fear with all the black on the catwalks.
Inspiration? 6267, Dior, Balenciaga

HRH: A jewel tone purple, deep and dark, but with a veil of pink in certain light. This colour is spot-on for F/W. Purple was spattered across the collections and makes a nice change from “blackish” nails, which look tired this season.
Inspiration? Vivienne Westwood, Alberta Ferretti

Chancer: Deep, “jewel” red, and very fitting for the understated collections. A classic red would seem too cheery this season, but this vampy sister colour will give your outfit “punch”.
Inspiration? Alexander McQueen, Chloe, Julien MacDonald

Swinger: This may be our favorite for this season. Shimmering, sheer metallic gold that has a green “patina,” as if it were antiqued. It will give a subtle glint to your nails, and can go either edgy or conservative, depending on what you wear. A great all-rounder.
Inspiration? Derek Lam, Anne Demeulemeester

Chimney Sweep: Another smoldering metallic that is this season’s answer to last year’s black nails. Dark, gun-metal grey that goes with EVERY collection. Modern, slick, and sexy. When your clothes are toned down, you need a colour like Chimney Sweep to show you are still paying attention to what’s in fashion!
Inspiration? Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Armani

Why Fake Nails are Tacky

ist2 2729779 hand with long acrylic nails Why Fake Nails are TackyOk before you start verbally attacking me please understand that I myself was a victim of these seemingly innocent, gleaming, smooth tips for many years. A decade or so ago, in my mid 20′s, I decided (not for the first time) to get acrylic nail tips. My reasoning was because I could NOT get polish to last on my nails for more than 24-48 hours and it drove me bonkers! I knew that with acrylic the polish stuck hard and therefore I wouldn’t have the chipping issues. That turned out to be true, however, I discovered that because my nails grow incredibly fast, I was having to get them filled every week or the cuticle area looked terrible. I was going to the nail salon every Friday evening and spending $20 or so a week. I also discovered that I am incredibly anal retentive when it comes to my nails (among other things) especially when I am spending good money; I expect them to be perfect. It would drive me WILD when one was slightly longer than the other, or slightly crooked or (God forbid) a bubble or hair appeared in the polish and the technician would happily go about her business as though everything was fine. Meanwhile I would have to be “that girl” and point out every flaw and have her fix it or I swear I would not be able to sleep that night.Â

Things went especially haywire when I discovered the french manicure. Talk about needing perfection, that white tip better be the same thickness on every nail and the same depth of white! It seriously drove me nuts. Aside from all that though, I never once thought the nails looked natural enough. And let me just say I like my nails very short, just maybe 1/4 inch above the tip of my finger, so it’s not like I had dragon claws or anything. They always just felt fake and thick even though I was going to a woman who was really great at getting them thin. So after a few years of this, I gave up and just had my natural nails. Then when I was about 30, I began work somewhere new where everyone had nice nails and I started to crave my *white whale* which was the flawless french manicure that was shiny, natural looking and never, ever chipped. This time I decided to try gel nails, not really knowing anything about them other than people at work had them and it looked good. I went to a new place since the woman I used to go to was long out of the business by then. I tried acrylic there first (because it was cheaper) and the man who worked there was absolutely flawless with his french tip application, he used an air brush and was really amazing. However, I still felt like they were these thick tacky appendages on my nails. So I went with gel the next time. Well, little did I know, they were giving me the fake gel treatment that is so very common in the cheap strip mall “salons”. They did everything exactly the same way as they did with acrylic only they topped it off with gel polish and cured it. It looked like CRAP people! It was all lumpy and gross and I was more than a little peeved. Clearly they didn’t know what they were doing. It was only later I discovered that this technique is a total scam and not the correct way to do gel. I tried probably 4 other salons around and not a single one of them did a good job OR did it the correct way. It was all acrylic topped with gel.Â
My next and last test was to try the silk wrap. I met a woman at work with absolutely gorgeous nails and she told me where she got them done so I went to her technician. Finally someone who had a CLEAN salon and knew what she was doing! They looked really great and since it was my own nail with just a thin layer of silk on them, they really looked more natural. The only issue was…my damn cuticles!!! I still have ridiculously fast growing nails so within a week I felt I needed a fill. Since this place was higher end and silk is more expensive, I just couldn’t fork over the cash every week for fills so I gave up the fake nails altogether. It’s been about 3 years since I’ve had anything other than polish on my nails and I am very happy about that!
My final conclusion regarding fake nails is that they are tacky because they never, ever, (ever!) look real. I can spot them a million miles away no matter how amazing the technician is. And here’s the rub, one thing that makes them look fake is how perfect they can be, so it’s a catch-22 as far as I’m concerned. I will stick to changing my chipped polish every 48 hours thank you very much!Â
And now for an incredibly accurate and hilarious video from comedian Anjelah Johnson…
